JDA gearbox replacement

Featured Replies

Hi folks, I'm new to Skodas and new to this forum so please be gentle while I become 'initiated'.

I recently bought a 2006 Fabia 1.9 diesel with FSH. It has been well looked after. I did the cambelt last week as it was approaching 'time'.

It drove beautifully. then..

My daughter (29 years old) was going to use it for a while. She jumped in started it and inexplicably slammed it into first gear without using the clutch!!!

The noise was horrible, and now the shifting from 1st to 2nd is lumpy at best.

So..

I have been sent a very similar box from a breakers up North - all the fittings are the same but the drive shaft flanges are slightly smaller and all the gear ratios are aroound 20-25% shorter. I can swap the flanges OK but I dont want the lower ratios so itrs going back.

The question is other than JDA (which seem quite rare) what other codes would have the right configuration for caples, wires etc AND give me the right ratios, or do I hold on until I can get a JDA. There is an EWT a few miles away which looks right from the piccies, would that be OK if its from a 1.9 diesel Fabia?

Thanks in advance

PS What would be involved in converting to 6 speed?

Only a box from another PD100 will have suitable ratios, the reason they're rare is that they really don't go wrong that much and most PD100's are still on the road.

The six-speed box is horrible, fragile, heavy and expensive, don't bother.

Sounds like my old gearbox, was really difficult 1st to 2nd and back to 1st from any gear. mine was a 1.2 mind so completely different gearbox

The EWT should work as it has the same ratios and the same fitment, but is an older gearbox not sure what the difference is other than that.

See this page for the gearbox codes and ratios:
