HELP! Steering wheel MFSW retrofit issues/questions

This is turning out to be a one step forward, one step back situation ... the second steering wheel works (green illumination lights, all buttons work as intended, no change to the car coding was required from the original steering wheel) ... but the received msfw controller/slip ring doesn't fit, it is very different in its shape and connectors, so I'll have to send it back, and get a different slip ring (no chance of changing what is currently on the wheel, as a direct replacement ... and I still have no idea where the G85 sensor is, is it inside the small clock spring module, or in my case, the under steering wheel module (reminder: it is a Skoda Superb II 2008) ...

I've finally received a suitable airbag today, so I won't be looking at the hole in the steering wheel anymore ... BUT, the problem is still there ... I currently have a working airbag (after clearing the related errors with VCDS, the airbag light is off, I guess the thing works), bu the horn is not functional ... the steering angle sensor is till not resolved and the system function test is still on ... today I gave it a thought and probably what happened is, when I connected the new steering wheel to the old MFSW cable (curiosity killed the cat, right), something was either reset or fried ... so, I've replaced the clockspring as described in the post before, but it seems the issue is somewhere else. Any ideas what to try next?

Regarding the steering sensor, I've managed to track down an interesting diagram that shows its approximate location and shape, but I don't remember seeing it in my car for the life of me and I've went through all of the photos I've made while I was replacing the clockspring ... I can't retrieve the part no., just its name - "steering sensor" ... gee, thanks, that helps ...

@vborovic - Update your VCDS to the latest version.

Then post your full original autoscan before you did anything and your full current autoscan so we can see exactly what you've done so far.

@langers2k - thanks for getting back to this, I can't update the VCDS to the latest version so that's off the list. I've researched a bit more, and used several YT videos as reference, it would appear that my car doesn't have the sensor from the diagram (as a separate module, and I've also managed to find its part no. - 1K0959654). Now, one thing comes to mind that I've somehow (shoot me if I know) enabled or activated the G85 sensor during the MFSW retrofit, which the car doesn't have as a separate module, which in turn would be normal that the car can't communicate with it (since it wasn't even installed). Turning the G85 sensor off should potentially solve the problem (maybe). Or, the other possibility is to actually install the mentioned sensor, I can get them for very cheap, if nothing else, to experiment and see what will happen with the G85 sensor as the steering sensor.

Still worth posting the scans, there are two G85 positions, one in the steering rack and the other near the slipring. The autoscans should give some clues as to which you have/need.

Have the logs on the diag notebook at home, will post them in the evening ... although, I must admit that the possibility to add the mentioned module is now very interesting to me (that should be the one which you define as "near the slipring") ... ... the interesting part is that the Steering assist module sees the G85 (one of the two), and I can calibrate it in the Basic Settings (full left to right steering wheel motion), clearing the dash error of the yellow steering wheel (in which case the steering wheel won't be returning to the center position during the drive).

Just to confirm, the only relivent hardware changes from the first and second scan are:

- the new steering wheel

- the new buttons

- the new wiring loom

- the new airbag

Looking on rosstech's page, the 1K0 953 549 CD doesn't have G85 built in, instead, it'll probably be part of the steering rack. If that's true, it's unlikely you have damaged it...

What happens if you reset all the error codes?

That's correct, just that. I also think that the G85 is in the steering rack (https://www.autoserviceprofessional.com/article/100576/wheres-the-steering-angle-sensor). But, what doesn't make sense is that I can calibrate the G85 sensor from the 44-Steering Assist, but not from the 03-ABS Brakes module.

Any G85 sensor errors that I clear will come back immediately after clearing, and the major part is that "004 - No Signal/Communication - MIL ON" for the G85 sensor. What also bothers me is that the horn is not working, I don't know how that is related (I'll re-check all the fuses today just in case). I've replaced the clockspring behind the steering wheel with new one having the same part.no., didn't help.

I may be on to something regarding the G85 sensor, have to test it out on the road .. but I can say at this point that all the fuses (under the dash and under the bonnet) are fine and regarding the horn, it also works when being tested with VCDS, but it won't sound when I press on the airbag ... I have to add that the horn stopped working sometime while switching wheels (Octavia Mk III and newer Superb=, because at one point I completely reverted to the old steering wheel, old msfw cable and old airbag, and the horn wasn't working.

It is there, along with other modules on a long list of G85 data consumers ... BUT ... (drum-roll please) ... I've solved it!!! (still no horn when pressing the airbag, but everything else was re-solved) ... first, a little music:

It's more how he wrote it, not what he wrote ... this got me thinking, and based on the link I've provided my previous post ...

... since I was already set to try and experiment with a secondary G85 sensor (a module which isn't standard on the Superbs), I thought about it "wait a minute, when and how you actually select which sensor the car is going to use?". That's when it hit me. I went to check the 44-Steering Assist -> Adaptation -> Steering Angle Sensor. And sure enough, it was on a wrong setting (I haven't touched this). It was set to 1 - Internal Steering Angle Sensor inactive, when the setting that should've been right for my car is the 0 - Internal Steering Angle Sensor active. Makes sense? Yes, makes sense. As soon as I've changed it from 1 to 0, the blown bulb error on the RPM gauge disappeared, with it, the xenon turning came back to life (no more message on the instrument cluster that the automatic turning lights are disabled), as well as the corner lights when turning the steering wheel (I only had the corner lights available if the turn indicator was on).

Now, I was left with 3 issues (only the 1st and 3rd were reported in VCDS, the TPMS was only visible on the instrument cluster) that are all 03-ABS Brake module related, and here's the breakdown:

#1 ABS error - The System Function Test active - there is a procedure which calls for having the car straight and ready to start. You press and hold the break pedal until the ABS light starts flashing, drive straight until reaching slightly above 20 km/h, and you turn the steering wheel to the left 270° (3/4of a full turn) and continue driving on the same speed for a few seconds, straighten the steering wheel, stop the car and that is done (before actually starting this, don't be in VCDS in the ABS module, because you won't see the ABS icon go out).

#2 TPMS error (my car doesn't have TPMS monitor valves, but the tyre pressure is calculated via ABS - difference in wheel speed rotation that should help you identify something is wrong with a tyre) - by using VCDS, you enter the basic settings (after entering the security code), select from the drop-down the TPMS reset, it is active, meaning it is waiting for your input - you need to press and hold the TPMS button on the left side of the gearbox, and it will show on the VCDS that it is reset, and no more icon on the speedo part of the instrument cluster.

#3 ESP error - the remaining fault was 00778 - Steering Angle Sensor (G85): No or Incorrect Basic Setting / Adaptation. Now, I've read a lot of available content and checked out several YT videos, what worked for me was the following (from start to finish): steering wheel is center (wheels as well) -> start the car (engine running) -> turn steering fully left -> turn steering wheel fully right -> return steering wheel to center -> VCDS (03 ABS Brakes - Security -> Enter code -> Basic Settings -> G85 Calibration -> if the status message says OK and 0.00°, the car is ready to continue, if you don't have such a situation (Not Available, etc.), you won't get any further - ON/OFF/Next won't help you) -> close the 03-ABS Brakes module -> turn steering wheel fully left and hold it there for a few seconds -> turn steering wheel fully right and hold it there for a few seconds -> return steering wheel to the center -> DONE. Go to 03-ABS Brakes, there should be no more faults regarding the angle sensor. Go to Measuring Blocks, Group 004, there is a G85 angle readout, it should be -1.5°/+1.5° from 0.00°.

And that's that, I believe it has been more than 3 months since I had such a clean situation on the instrument cluster that it looks very bland and uninteresting now ...

Yes, everything works (except the phone buttons, but that's only because there is no phone module in the car - at least for now) ... the horn is still an issue, but that's of low priority now, will get to it eventually

The lack of horn is probably an issue with the wiring loom between the airbag/buttons and slipring.

Can you either make a wiring diagram or take pictures showing exactly how your loom is wired?

The loom part number will also help for others trying this retrofit. If I get chance I'll try and find the part number I used too.

This is the airbag as it was received from a seller (and I've checked many other available photos on the, web this is how it is supposed to be wired). The first shown cable is the one without the buttons on the steering wheel (there is one extra wire and connector that goes out of the loom into the buttons on the left side). I've put the other cable (which I had obtained previously), reconnected the wires in proper places, and connected to the wheel ... the airbag is ok, the buttons are ok ... once again, when I reconnected the factory fitted steering wheel + cable + airbag, the horn also wasn't working (it did work before I started tampering with the wheel retrofit):

There is no error shown in the VCDS regarding the horn not working.

Sorry, I'd missed where you said you'd connected the original wheel/loom/airbag and it still didn't work :/

I only asked as there are a few versions of the wiring loom that look almost identical but are wired differently.

Regarding the horn not working, which I should really get fixed, here's the situation ... the horn as a unit works, I can trigger its function via VCDS, but it won't work when I press the airbag ... the clockspring was replaced (when though of as the steering wheel angle sensor) ... the airbag's "button" should work, although I can't be exactly sure (but I know that my old steering wheel's horn action also stopped making the sound during the whole retrofit drama ... so, if there is a horn relay in the bonnet fuse box, would it be possible that I can activate the horn via VCDS with a faulty horn relay? Also, if it helps, I've tested the horn button (airbag press) and VCDS doesn't show it as being triggered. Does anyone have the related wiring diagram, so I could see which cable/pin goes to where regarding the car's horn?

Bumping this 5 month old topic for help..

I have a 2012 superb pre fl without mfsw and has cruise control on left stalk and maxidot control on right stalk.
I have fitted a 2014/15 octavia vrs flat bottom wheel with correct steering module.
All connected and the horn/buttons do not work and also the stalk for the maxidot display also does not work.

Edit: currently fitted wiring loom 1K0971584C but have 5E0971584A in the mail

I know that it all needs coded which i have OBDeleven, unfortunatelly the long coding is in german so i need help on what the correct code should be.

Whent with the MFSW Retrofit on my new Skoda

Octavia 1Z5 2007 1,9TDI DSG

MFSW with push to talk buttons ( came from 2.0.TDI 2009 Octavia, bought on eBay from Germany)

New Steering Wheele Module ( 1K0 953 549 AP switched with a new 1K0 953 549 CH from AliExpress)

Issues after reasembly:

- no steering assist

- yello steering wheel symbol in dash

- ESP warning light in dash

1. I cleared the No steering assist and Steering wheel symbol in dash issue

Completting the whole G85 Basic Reset for (1K) golf ( RossTech wiki) + Steering Limit Stop Adaptation

within the 16 - Steering wheel

2. The ESP dash Light whent off

after finding and carefuly dooing the the whole "vborovic #3 ESP error " post up there

within the 03 - Brakeasist

then

3. No steering assist and steering wheel symbol in dash issue came up again

cleared it with completting the whole G85 Basic Reset for (1K) golf + Steering Limit Stop Adaptation

this time within the 44-Steering Assis

Maybe the issues where self inflicted ?

I switched my Steering wheel with the my Wheels NOT in a straight possition.

I did NOT un clamp the car Battery.

The Slip ring did change its position once ot twice after steering wheel was of.

The Steering Wheel Module came un coded.

I Clicked on Yes and set it to Basic setings in VCDS..

My first guess would be the Chinese knockoff control module. Get a genuine control module and see what happens.

Has anybody tested 5LD 919 719 buttons on PQ25 or PQ35 Platform car?

@exantas- 5LD 919 719 certainly seem to be sold as PQ35 compatible. Couldn't find any autoscans online though 😕

I think they might be from a Octavia/Yeti from the Chinese market?
