Independent servicing

Featured Replies

With apologies if this has been covered already.

Is it better to pay the Skoda dealer for servicing, or save a fortune by using a local garage?

I've been quoted £310 plus £60 brake fluid change by my Skoda dealership.

How do you get round the online service record? And does it affect the (5 year) warranty?

The car's a 2014 model, 2 litre diesel estate - variable service intervals, now just over 36000 miles.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

Im not sure how it works in the UK but I justified the extra cost of the Skoda service by the free european breakdown cover that comes with it.

This would be at least 100gbp here so makes the difference not so much.

In the end, all that matters is its serviced properly.

My 10cents Worth would be, if you will sell the car after a few years privately, the dealer service history might be Worth a few hundred-quid extra on a sale.

If you plan on keeping it for a long time, the Skoda service history isn't so important.

Just keep the reciepts, invoice from whichever garage you choose.

If you want a Warranty Valid and not to use a Main Dealership then there are Independents with all the gear & an idea and their equipment is licenses and the get TPI's, Recall Notices, Updates and access to the online servicing records and can input the cars servicing.

Or just go bareback with some independent and you might miss out on Updates etc.

£370!?

What on earth are they doing?

It is £149 for an oil and oil filter, plus another £120 for the air, fuel and pollen filters.

Plus the brake fluid at £52.

See here, scroll down and click between the service and maintenance tabs...

That's a total of £321 and that is absolute worst case. I can only assume the extra £49 is for their Christmas party fund?

If they won't reduce the bill then vote with your feet and take your business elsewhere.

Go to another dealer, it should be £310 including the brake fluid change at the most

Thanks for the replies - and apologies for the delay in my response, but I wanted to wait until the job was done to report back. Anyway, I did shop around as suggested and got the service done at the Skoda dealership (RRG) in Bolton for £189. Result!

... best dealer in the NW by a country mile - RRG Bolton & Rochdale.

Who quoted you the silly money prices - Simpsons?

It was indeed Simpsons - how did you guess?

Because anyone who has experience of the various Skoda dealers in the NW could have put money on it as a sure bet.

Simpsons like to promote their offers on new cars, offer bottom dollar trade in prices and haven't a clue when it comes to servicing. But Skoda like them because Neil goes rallying in a Skoda and therefore they get special favours from Skoda UK. Any customer who shopped around and tried out other dealers such as RRG Rochdale would soon realise and never go back to Simpsons. Someone has to pay for that rally car - I wonder who? :)

I see Simpsons getting a bad rep on here, but I've used them a few times for servicing and warranty work as they are the closest dealer.

Never had any issues, had them try it on with unnecessary service work, or had them try to charge me anything other than the prices shown on the Skoda Fixed servicing page. Even took my own oil to the last service which they were totally fine with and discounted it to about £80. Had a clutch replaced under warranty at 56k on my FL MK2 VRS with no hassle too by them.

Everyone's experience might be different but I've had no reason to complain. They are far better than the local dealers of other Brands that I've dealt with up this way.

After 3 years old you can get cheaper servicing at Skoda, also many will give a 10% discount for being a member of Briskoda. Some interesting service plans around as well. I initially was quoted a higher price untile I pointed this out to the dealer, also then organised a cheaper future service plan.

They are the only dealer I know of that after doing an oil consumption test on a Fabia vRS Mk2 they let the owner drive off without any oil in the engine at all!

You seem to have good experiences with them, unfortunately I personally haven't, and know a few others as well.
