Roof bars/roof box/cycle carriers

Featured Replies

I imagine this has been covered before but the camping season is upon us and people may be in the market for the above including myself,so does anybody have any recommendations for roof bars/roof box/cycle carriers? And maybe more importantly the ones to avoid? It's for an Octavia I should add.

i've had my oem bars for several years and they are holding up great (think they might be made by thule) but if i was in the market i'd check out the whispbars - they look cool and more aerodynamic than the skoda items.

box - i have thule atlantis.  bike carriers - thule proride.   You can't go wrong with thule imo.

Have a look on here. I've ordered from them a few times and they are spot on. Also look for the 5% discount code on Google.

mmm, im in the same predicament only i need to find a way of attaching a drift trike to the roof. Its not mine BTW, im far to middle aged and un-cool.

Agree.

I have had various roof bar/carriers in the past.

Thule are the best design, quality & fit. May not be the cheapest but you get what you pay for.

Have Thule Black Wingbars & 591 Pro ride bike carriers on the Octy at the moment.

Shop around. You can get them for significantly less than that.

I brought Wispbars for our current car, a Cee'd without roof rails; not cheap but the big selling point is the different foot options. Changing to an Octavia with roof rails only requires a different foot pack @ £28.

I've got the bars permanently attached at the moment, but the with the roof rail feet it looks easier to fit and remove so when the Octy arrives I'll remove them between usage.

I've got two basic Thule bike carriers, can fit both on with a Kami Husky roof box.

Cheers,

Jamie

Hmmm, Cannock?

For bike racks, if you have a towbar then i would strongly recommend a towbar mounted rack. I have the atera one which works well, although the thule ones are pretty good too

@Ant-Vrs can you still open your pano roof with the bars on?

Ordered my new bars yesterday and have been wondering - kids love the roof open!

Cheers,

Been having a good look round seems plenty of options out there, think I need to go to some shops where I can actually look/touch at them for a better idea. One thing I doing wonder about putting bikes on roof of car is,do the folks who do this carry some form of foot stool around with them? Looks very easy to drop or slip with bike and scratch/dent car!

If you are tall enough to touch the middle of the roof and strong enough to lift the bike above head height, you won't have a problem putting the bikes on top. Holding front forks and rear triangle close to the hubs, place the wheels on the carrier first then lock the frame in and you will be ok.

Seconded!  A very helpful company.  I've bought several times from them, including roof bars, roof box and tow-hook mounted bike carrier.  All very good quality and very helpful answering any questions you may have.

You can open the pano all the way, just be careful where you fit the bars.  I've got the Thule wingbars on mine which takes a Kamei Corvara roofbox.  Tilt opening is generally the better option as the aerodynamics of the roofbox means a lot more air will come down through the roof if open fully and at speed,

Here's what I specifically ordered from www.roofbox.co.uk, taken directly from my invoice so you get the part numbers as well:

Item Code   Description
TU757          Thule (180) Rapid System railing clamps (4) no. 757
TU961B        Thule (88) Rapid System 118cm WingBars (2), black, no. 961B

I also separately ordered a spare set of the rubber strips from Amazon which slot into the top of the wingbars.  You have to cut the supplied strips to accommodate whatever fitting mechanism you have for your roofbox, but if you want to leave just the bars on without the box then this can leave a couple of gaps on each bar.  Apart from degrading the aerodynamic properties of the bars, also looks a bit unsightly, imo.  Complete separate strips solve this problem - see link below.

Roofbox are a really helpful crew.

I have Atera bars and a Kamei Delphin box.

My bike racks are Thule. All are excellent.

I can can open the pano roof fully, tilt and slide, with the bars in place. You just have to position the bars carefully and test the roof as you set them in position and then tighten them.
