Annoying tinkly dash rattle

Featured Replies

Has anyone had a rattle coming from the dash area (could be the wheel, the vents, the trim ... I can't localise it) that sounds like a small washer loose on a screw? This tends to happen over 'older' roads and although isn't very loud is quite annoying!

If so -- did you narrow it down and find a fix? (It really does sound like a concealed loose fixing, which in itself is troubling...)

The only rattle I've learned to live with, annoyingly,is a rattle when its fairly hot outside and I have the temperature down inside. I get a rattle behind the glove box area which I put down to the aircon working harder. In cooler or colder weather the rattle is absent.

Mine is the opposite.

The Glove box lid support arms rattle when the car is cold but goes when the car is warm.

If you grab them with the lid open the noise disappears.

I noticed this more during the winter first thing in the morning.

There are no 'new roads' in North Dorset!

ettiz, yes, I have exactly the same tinkling rattle over old roads. Sometimes hard to hear (it's never loud, but it's a background noise tinkle) but it's there and annoying. It's the only rattle in my car. I thought it was the ignition switch because when I grabbed the key and exerted slight downward pressure on it the noise seemed to stop. I later realised it hadn't really stopped at all! So as yet I haven't tracked it down and it's unlikely my dealer will ever find it either. It's not there all the time either, even over old roads (roads with a slightly rough surface as opposed to a really smoother one). The noise also sometimes seems to be coming from the steering wheel, around the control buttons/wheels. It's as if there is a loose screw rattling around somewhere inside the steering wheel.

Estate Man -- that's pretty much it. It comes and goes, yesterday it was all quiet. There are certain stretches of road that do it: old enough to be no longer smooth, but not broken. It's most obvious around 50-55mph.

But when it does tinkle it's impossible to nail down the exact area! I've tried poking the plastic trim, prodding the dial hood, holding the key, squeezing the wheel, fiddling with the vents, adjusting the steering position and playing around the column cowling, having a grope around the exposed bit on the reverse of the wheel... It has to be inside something, which probably means lumping for a psychoacoustic solution (until something obviously drops off).

I get a tinkling noise when I leave my ID pass on its lanyard in the glove box or in the door pocket and it rattles against the plastic. Could be that rather than the car itself?

Nah, definitely the car. Came back today.

Still convinced mine is aircon related.

I get tree debris in the space under the wipers (due to being parked under trees).

Acorns rattle a treat, as do some of the other tree seeds and twigs.

You can't see them from inside the car.

it's nothing to do with aircon, or debris or anything like that.. it's crap fitting plastic trims and has been an issue since the Mk1 Fabia.. just ignore it, it comes and goes from day to day.. don't bother taking it to a dealer to sort out, you'll risk them doing a heavy handed job and breaking something or making it worse by not tightening things up again properly..

what Skoda need to do, is stop being cheapskates and line all the plastic in the car with some quality rubber/foam seals, so when they are screwed/snapped together you eliminate the rattles..

but I doubt they'll ever fix the issue, as they like to rip us all off..

I did wonder if a judicious application of silicone might help, but in this case I couldn't figure out where because it doesn't seem to be plastic trim.

trust me.. it's the plastic trims and the dash.. put your hand on the dash in certain places when driving and it will stop.. just to the right of the steering wheel is a common place.. drivers door is another area.. the central armrest if you have one fitted is another.. near the b-pillar where you adjust the seatbelt height - that's another.. the list goes on!

My tinkle is definitely metallic. Not plastic related,  not creaking, not a banging or squeaking. Sounds like a screw loose (I've had one for sometime!) and it's rattling very quietly inside the steering wheel airbag area or nearby. It's barely audible some days, but others just a little lounder. I'm pretty good at tracking them down as it was part of my job when I was a tech in the trade, but this one has me beat.

My tinkle is like Estate Man's.

Wait that didn't come out right...

It sounds like Estate Man's although I'd say small washer on a machine screw. Comes and goes. I've tried prodding everything plastic and proddable.

ettiz, yeah, we share the same tinkle!! I think your description of a washer on a machine screw is a better way to describe it.

This morning I found pushing the steering wheel cable loom (up behind the fuse box cover) slightly to the left helped a bit. Didn't completely eliminate the tinkle.
