tighten up the gearshift

Featured Replies

Hi All,

This may sound a little odd, but i really like the gearbox in the Fabia VRS TDI drivetrain. The gear engagement is really clean and overall it's very fun to stir the gears.

However, one complaint I do have, which I believe just to be due to the car being 10 years old, is that the action of the shifter is sloppy; like stirring a wand in a large pot.

What parts (OE or upgrade) would I need to tighten up the shifter and make it more direct?

Thanks in advance,

Dan

42 draft design solid shifter bushes make a good difference but mine does have this same feeling still. Mine is on 117k miles now so i'm guessing its something worn away slightly, I'd also like to know what though

Most likely the ball pivot the gearstick is attached to. Remove the gaitor and see how much play is in it. I believe there is a way using shims to reduce the play.

Also can be play in the linkage between the gearstick and cable joint.

Thanks for the replies guys,

Sorting out the play, is this something my local garage could diagnose and sort? Or is a specialist workshop recommended ?

Cheers!

Possibly this.... Or something similar.

I laughed at the cardboard shim until I saw where he placed it.

If the fabia is the same set up then that looks like a good easy fix

I think an appeal is in order then...

Has anyone out there performed this or similar on their shifters?

On a Fabia...

Doesn't show the shimming but shows the plastic ball, rubber/plastic socket and the metal top bracket.

i.e. Looks the same to me.

Take the gearstick surround off for a better look. I was going to add that there is a pictorial guide but due to a combination of age/entropy and bl**dy photobucket, there aren't (piccies).

If anything else is wrong this mod won't fix it. It's not exactly expensive though. Just make sure not to drop the torx screws down into the mech. :)

Thanks vindaloo,

I think you're right, it does look very similar.

This has turned out to be a really informative thread. Awesome stuff

My shifter knob does need changing, so that would be a good time to check the play in the ball seat.

I know this is kinda an old post but wondered if this has been tried and what the outcome was?

oh and happy new year to all

Holy thread revival. Yes it does work. Worked well on mine anyway.

Plenty of things get worn. My cable ends are on their last legs, slider is pretty much nonexistent. The bad thing is that most upgrades (soild bushes, cable ends, brass sliders, short throw shifters, etc) are for 02Q, 02J and 02M transmissions, 6 speed transmissions and little else. Not much for my little close ratio HZK 02T gearbox.

Make sure to keep everything clean and well greased. Made a world of difference, though I'll have to address the worn stuff sooner than later.
