New Forum/Site Thread Two: Tell me what you don't like.

Featured Replies

I see planning permission within briskoda is a lot easier and a lot less bureaucratic than trying to get planning permission from your local authority.

I have noticed that before' date=' I could click the reload button and it would refresh the "new posts" list with all new posts, whereas now the reload button reloads the same page the same, and to actually get the up to date list you need to click the new posts button itself. This isn't a problem, more of an ideosyncracy that I need to adapt to. :D

(the words "old", "dog", "new" & "tricks" spring to mind, and I'm only bloody 24!)[/quote']

You and me both, Jason, although I've got a few years on you!

Nice thing about it is that it is available from everywhere now, as it is in the standard header. Before you would have had to go to the home page and click on it from there.

  • I think the new look lacks the small forum feel of the last one. It made Briskoda stand out from all the other forums. In short it doesn't feel as friendly. Still onwards and upwards etc. Steve

  • Does seem slightly slower to me, lastnight especially slow. I can see 2 possibilities, 1) Last night there were a lot of guests online, these were all for the most part googlebots indexing the site.

Colin , I know that my eyesight isn't as good as it was , but the font size in the quote box is very small !

Will 'ave a go at making it bigger...we know what we said anyway :D...

must try harder

must try harder

must try harder...

Cheers Colin , that's much better !

Colin,

Well done mate it does look alot better, the only gripe is, for us unbroadband people, you have to wait ages for the full page to be displayed, unlike before when it came up bit by bit and I personally prefer it when you have something to read, cause i'm an impatient bugger!!

Re: eyes hurting. I could only stand it for a few minutes yesterday hence just the 'ditto' remark in the Lounge. It has to be something to do with the resolution or the fact that the site is alot brighter. Maybe I really should go out and buy that new monitor I've been promising myself but it never happened before and I can feel my eyes straining now so I'm going in a bit.

Apart from that, nice one Colin

Actually, one more thing. All this time I thought everyone was replying to Huck. When did you pinch his avatar?

This is more a "for info" than a complaint...

Mozilla doesn't render those snazzy new quote bubbles properly (see attachment). It's probably a deficiency in the version (1.0) of Mozilla I'm using, though.

Ah, I think my browser is showing the quick reply box when it shouldn't be - I kept wondering why I couldn't type in it! (browser is konqueror 3.1.4)

Thanks for pointing out the little icon, that seems to let me use quick reply :)

Er...

Attachments don't work, either? No, just finger trouble

... try again

714.attach

Colin: now perfectly understand why the quick reply function has to be activated. I agree, that's a Catch 22. But won't most people simply click on the post directly above instead of the one pertaining to their comment? Won't do the threaded view much good...

Perhaps a minor change to the wording in the disabled quick reply box - something maybe like "Click on quick reply (quickreply.gif) in the relevant post above to activate ..."

That's the way it's meant to work, Faye - the box is there but disabled until you designate which post you are replying to by clicking the icon in that post.

Caveat - assuming I'm understanding correctly :p

The new site seemed a lot slower to me but I just put it down to the fact that It was probably busy on the net when I was trying to use it so here I am at 5.20 AM & its still so slow. Must be due to all the extra bits on the page, probably most of which I will never use.

Rumour control says that broadband is now available in our area so hopefully that will sort it but if I have to stay with steam powered internet access I can see me (Mr Impatient) loosing patience with the site.

Scoobynet is really quick, what is the difference ???????

Stuart

Yes, it's slow for me at home as well. OK at work on 512k leased line but very 'jerky' if you know what I mean.

For example, I normally click on the button to show the last post in a thread and the scroll up to see if I've missed anything else. However, now when you do this and scroll up, at some indeterminate time later it decides to dump you back at the last post again. I can't see why as the page appears to have loaded - hence I can scroll up - but obviously there is a later event that sends me back again.

I liked the old home page as well. I use Briskoda from quite a few PCs, some of which I can't really set favourites on  With the new home page I have to remember to add the /forums on the end or click on the forums link on the home page. I can see how it might benefit newbies, but doesn't help us old hands. Sorry, I know it's only a click, but I guess a similar look could have been achieved in the old home page.

Howard,

A lot of what was acheived with the old version of the vbulletin software was done so with "hacks" - packages created by users of the software that altered or extended the functionality of the forums. Having it generate a "static" page was one such hack...

As I understand it (and Colin can correct me, he has a lot more experience with vbulletin), the company that produce the forum software have made it clear that they do not want anyone releasing hacks until they release the final version of the software (we're using beta7 atm). Although there are sites that carry some hacks, it may be the case that the RC of the boards will be slightly different, which will mean hacks won't work... think that makes sense :D

For now we're really limited to changes to the templates - with which we can make some changes. Meant to be possible to get the "xxx new posts since your last visit" post (which was a hack for version2) which is my goal for this week (along with a welcome panel like vb2 had)

Hopefully, the vb developers will work on the overall speed, but a lot of the perceived slowness is down to the use of tables in the templates meaning everything has to be sent to the browser before it gets drawn to screen... I'd imagine that we'd be able to optimise them a bit more to help with the speed front...

Stuart,

Stick with it...there are so many variables here.

1. Servers! We share a server, simple fact is we share a configuration optimised for everybody, not just us...vb3 pushes the servers hard in a different way from many sites. Thus there are going to be slow periods, as the hosts see the server load changing they will react, already had one rebuild since we joined for "db problems" our site seemed to exploit :D

2. Page download etc. The site/pages/queries are technically faster than old forum...however as pointed out there is alot more information been presented. Initially we had it all on to see what would work, both in production and users responses :D Anybdy notice similar threads gone? Search will do fine as a search, titiles are never clear enough on a forum anyway.

3. Skins, we will after the initial RC is released look at specific user or should I say community created skins, this is to say where we see blue or a full page of graphical quotes you can choose a "dial-up" skin that is basically just the information and few graphics.

4. RC, it will get faster.

5. Throw me

Im not a techy but it seems to make sense so I will stick with it as you say it'll get better

Let me know when "Skins" are available

Will bump it up the ladder, keep you in the loop now for testing :D

Stuart, if you want to make it "lighter" and quicker you already can, neat little new feature is in your control panel..

Click on "options" and then scroll down to "post elements" - you can turn off signatures, avatars and and images - may make a great "work mode" also.

Hope this helps.

maybe i'm blind but i can't seem to see any indicators of when a particular post was written.

just me?

Huck, Above each posters name, should bea grey on dark blue reference...might move it if not crystal clear...

Great job Colin on the new look Briskoda.

Have got on with using the new site and like it a lot. The only observation I would make is using white text against the light blue background, can make the text unclear if viewing under strong lights.

This in not a criticism but and observation, I find that unless dark blue or black in used, it is not necessary to use white text (i.e. next page... & numbers).

Cheers

Mike
