New Forum/Site Thread Three: Tell me what you do like.

Some things we have got right, or the people who make the forums have.

This is an out of the zip file install of the new software, as such it binds most of the modifications from the last forum in to a stock product. This subsequently makes it easier to support for other, new admins, we fall back into the software providers support umbrella and finally, any issues with performance and db can be settled with host and software vendors in a more structured way.

Fire away, the smallest cog that works is as important as the obvious on/off switch.

Hi Colin,

it takes a little while to get used to the new "look"....lots to take in visually but it looks "classy".

I would like to see a dividing line as per the last look, between the "sticky" information postings and the postings proper. At the moment I have to scan throught them all to find the new posts. I suppose I could use the new thread function though.

I like the PM box indicator, very useful for me.;)

Cheers.

Adrian.

I've already said this but I'll say it again: hats off to the homepage look and the upper top bar. Outstanding!

Less is more... :D

Browser neutral. I expected it to be OK at work (IE5, transparent proxies). I'm pleased to report that it also works just fine at home (Mozilla 1.0 hiding behind a Squid proxy)

I won't try lynx, that would just be too unfair ;)

What I do like:

The colour scheme - although criticised by some has a very clean, crisp, professional look about it. The buttons are cleaner than the old ones (specially the iteration just before the upgrade), if a little small. Getting used to it though.

Previous/next thread links

Threaded view - may start to use this - always used to read news this way.

Yes Nick, off topic threads are a joy to behold now, we can follow the real thread :D.

I'm working on fixing that bug............

PS: Nice to see that car details have been added to the user profile box for each post. Maybe members who haven't already done so will now edit their profiles to add their car details too. :)

I like being able to indicate why I have edited a post.

Well, if you can read this, it means that it's possible to navigate around the site and post to it :)

Edited: just to say that this was originally posted from a lynx browser

I like it when you leave your cursor over the link to a post, when looking at the new posts screen, and a box flashes up telling you the first 100 words or so of the first post, so you don't need to click in and wait for it to load up, if you know it's something you're probably not that interested in.

Still struggling with formatting on netscape 4.7 at work though. :(

I love the "24h Posts". Much better than missing them on the "New Posts" when you get timed out without reading them all.

New yellow boxes indicating new posts

Yes, I like this too. Especially for finding something I replied to earlier in the day, without having to look through the forums manually.

Just found it. Very handy.

I've just browsed most other parts of the site, and I like them all! FAQ and reviews are handled much better this way than with the forum-based set-up.

But what happened to the old reviews? Will they be added later on?

They'll be migrated (expensive word for cut & paste) over in time. Ofcourse, each and everyone who has done a review could do that themselves to make the work of us all a bit easier... :)

Frustrated here again, when will the site get quicker PLEASE. My post rate must be falling as it takes so long, I also find myself visiting the site less.

I love the apearance of the new site although I probably dont use a quarter of the little Gismos.

I will bear with it but PLEASE send it to Jabba for a remap or add Nos ASAP

I've noticed at home when I have my "bytes received / sent" box open, that each box with a thread in "10 posts a page" takes up about 150Kb of data, and that's just with text and no piccies, etc. On a 56K modem it can take up to 40 seconds for a page to load up, which can be annoying at home (ok on ISDN at work)

I sympathise with Stuart, as I also suffer from home. It just seems the new layout has more kb of graphics / links / etc.

Hope this helps.

Jason: Here's a tip. Don't put a picture in your signature...

Strange... I'm having no speed problems at all with the site. I've just timed a couple of page loads; they are 5-10 secs.

I'm on a plain old 56k dial-up line, and I'm fetching mail (OK, dumping spam to /dev/null) and a couple of Usenet groups at the same time.

... Confused in Newport

On broadband here, topics list quickly but even with 600k connection the thread pages take 4-5 secs per page. The previous version was more or less instant.

I'm actually a bit suspicious of the MSN/ICQ/Yahoo/AIM icons. Don't they require a contact to the respective servers?

I immensely like the change to words (my Profile, my Gallery, etc.) instead of the Mickey Mouse buttons.

Well the general census in the community is this little quick reply box...I'll trial the site for a while without it...Stuart, call me when your online and we'll do some live performance testing.
