Head unit swap car won't start

Featured Replies

Hey there, total yeti newbie here. Just bought a 2013 with a swing head unit and bought a Sony XAV-AX100 head unit to replace the swing. I bought a wiring harness and swapped it all out. It looks great but now the car won't start. It's totally dead. Any thoughts and advice warmly appreciated. Thanks

It could simply be a flat battery, have you tried jump starting it ?

Maybe, I'll check. Car was perfect until I removed the old head unit, so think I've done something else. Does the car need to be recoded ? Anyone know a good auto electrician. In Melbourne ?

If it's a new head unit it should not need recoding or it will have the code with it.
I suspect you've pulled something apart.

Or blown a fuse. I presume that  you disconnected the battery before fitting the alternative  unit?  Quite easy to do if not.

I'd go to the fuse box first!

thanks, I forgot to disconnect the battery, so I'll check the fuses, its currently completely dead, cabin lights work and that's it

thanks for suggestions guys. Fuses check out OK, wondering what I have done....

What else works; locking, unlocking, lights, music, windows...?

What voltage at the battery?

What happens when you try to start, a click or nothing at all?

Can you replace the old head, or at least disconnect the new?

My suspicion now,  going back to your original post is that you haven't done anything wrong.... As Clive says, your battery has probably had it.

You say it's dead, so that tells you straight away that  it's not going to start the car or do much else either,  no matter what head unit's in it. Dead battery, no power.... Simple. However,

If you know for sure your battery is ok, then recharge it. If it's had it, (more likely), then get a new one. No other solution.

But a lesson here. NEVER, EVER work on a vehicles electrics without isolating the battery. It takes milliseconds  to damage electronic components on modern cars, and can work out very expensive.

Once you KNOW FOR SURE that you have a fully charged, problem free battery, then hopefully all will be fine. If not, then disconnect it, remove the head unit, and check your work.

SOME IC units have their own fuse on the back of the sets. Check that out. Go over the wiring loom that you've installed and ensure it's all plugged in properly and that it is definitely the  correct one for your car.

Most modern cars require a battery to have AT LEAST 12 volts to start. Even a slight loss of voltage will be enough to prevent starting.

But NEVER work on car electrics with the battery connected. I worked in the Auto Electrical trade for 17 years....It's Rule 1.

Any news on your car not starting David???

Hi all,

thanks so so much for your help. The fuses I checked were the dashboard fuses, and did not realise there was a fuse box in the engine bay as well  it was a blown fuse and we are back in business. Skoda - simply clever and a tad frustrating!!

Glad to see you've git it sorted David

Good man.    Remember next time.

Working on electrics...Disconnect the battery.

Glad you have got it sorted.
