Recall on 2009 Octavia VRS. ABS/ESC control module

Who were you talking to the Service Desk Staff or a Qualified Master Tech?

You need to speak to nobody about your Remap on the Engine Management,

The Dealership or you can ask in writing from the sender of the RECALL Letter  if the Safety Critical Recall actions will affect the Engine Management / Software,

and get that in writing.

Get anything you are told at dealerships in writing with the employees job title, name and technical qualifications and a signature.

In Gods we trust, in VW Group Franchised dealerships you want assurances in writing.

It was the service desk. Don't like dealing with main dealers as they are crap. Thanks for the heads up. I will look into it more before I let them near my pride and joy. I take it you have had issues in the past?

Never ever had an issue because once you have worked with the useless clueless lot for any period of time you get to know that everything needs checked and double checked,

and even then you are likely to be lied to by employees who have zero technical knowledge.

Talk with Trained & Qualified Technicians, and only those that bother to actually check out why or what for something is being done and that are not just doing stuff because some clueless manager or office person told them to.

Yeah I can believe that. I have a 2001 vectra sri and I remember taking it to Vauxhall for a service. I sat for 2 hoir waiting for them to come out and tell me that it needed some other things doing. I asked why didn't they tell me while I was sitting waiting. So since then I have never been back to a main dealer. I've had my Skoda since January it's got a full Skoda service history but won't take it back to them as I don't trust them. Love to know how it's took them 8 years to figure out there is a problem

^^^ What are you asking about having had done, the Recall action on the ABS / ESC control unit?

Or are you talking Emissions Fix ?

I'm referring to the abs recall.

I'd rather steer well clear of the main dealer, unless absolutely necessary.

Maybe you might need to go eventually if it is a DVSA recall because it will be called so that cars can steer clear of solid or soft objects in emergency situations.

Or you can just ignore and then 'whats the worst that can happen' if a Registered Keeper ignores a warning of a possible Fundamental Design, Manufacturing or Quality Control failing of a braking system.

Just checked mine on the VIN checker and it is indeed under a recall but I haven't had the letter yet, think this needs to be highlighted as when I googled this issue it threw up quite a few that have had to pay for it in the past, might be helpful to them now that Skoda has admitted the problem, I am sure those that may have had to pay might get refunded?

This recall for the ABS/ESC module, is not just limited to Octavia or vRs as both my daughter  08 Diesel Golf  1.9tdi and my 09 Octavia vRS Le have both got the letter. I am going to check with CAB as to legal issue about them updating the Emissions issue @ the same time ! as they aren't touching that! I will let you know what CAB say.

It would be useful to know which VIN checker reports this ABS issue - is it the website linked below?

http://master.skoda-auto.com/mini-apps/recall-actions

Yes

I didnt get a letter for mine - 09 Ltd Ed, but had a service last Saturday. Turned up to drop the car off and was advised there was a recall on the car for the ABS module update.

Told the guy I had not been notified of it etc, he had no idea what to say really.

They apply the update, take it for a test drive and if the ABS light comes up it requires a replacement module - which would mean leaving the car there.

He also mentioned that they couldnt really let me take the car away without doing the update - thanks for letting me know before hand then :dull:

Phoned my local dealer, they set my account up and it comes up with 2 recalls, the emissions one and the ABS one, said no thanks to the emissions 'Fix' and was advised will have to sign a letter refusing, no problem, ABS is booked in for the end of the month, will report back then.

09 CR170 LE.

Just a thought freedom but why should you have to sign a letter? Is it a new Skoda dealer law? Or is it just a way of them getting out of paying compensation if it ever gets that far?

I will be doing exactly the same as you are , but if they think I am signing a letter saying no to the emissions  fix they are very much mistaken!

FYI, That's T2000, not freedom: Freedom is the membership type thing on here.

Got my letter a couple of weeks ago. I'm well aware of the emissions fix issues and was reluctant at first but it's safety related and want it done.

It's booked in at Vindis Skoda Bury st Edmunds and I have to say they were very good on the phone. I was asked if I also wanted the outstanding emissions update which I refused point blank. They accepted this with no quibble and advised I'd have to sign a disclaimer, which is fine.  I think I'll be making them sign my own paperwork too.

I'm using this as an opportunity to test their paint warranty for the standard number plate recess rust problem too.

Is there a software update associated with this recall?

If so, is it independent of the emissions update? While the Skoda dealer accepted my declining the update, there is some scaremongering floating about forums that they'll do it anyway it'll be wrapped up in the same update software.

Brakes are a safety matter,

the VW Group Defeat Device not a safety matter and no compulsory recall in the UK,

so you ask in writing at the Dealership and get an assurance the Safety Service Campaign field action is done on the brakes and 'The Fix' for emissions is not carried out.

I have had my ABS recall done today and safe to say there were no issues. Made it clear not to touch the engine management at all. And they have only done what was needed. Remap untouched and car is as was when it went in

Did they drive it afterwards? My understanding of it is that  they do the 'fix' then drive it and if the ABS light comes on it has to have an new ABS unit, keep your eye on it, I don't know what timespan it covers though?

Yes they drove it for about 4 miles. And said if the light came on it would have needed the unit replacing. They didn't give any indication of time. But if it comes on then it will go back as they messed with it

Probably a stupid question, but how do recall notices work? How does Skoda know I own the car now, and not the original owner, aside from V5?

After 8 years skoda figure out there is a problem and work out which cars would be affected. Everything they need to know is online DVLA will have all the information about who owns the car now so. Not sure exactly how they work out how many cars would have the problem. But all the information is available and pretty much all the systems are linked as most if not all dealerships do Mots and services. There is nowhere to hide and nothing they can't find out about the car and who has it

Thanks, I thought that might be the case. I've never received a single word from Skoda, so wasn't sure if I had to register up with them. Not that I'd want VAG going anywhere near my car though frankly.

I hear that. I was sceptical about them doing mine. But I spoke to a VW specialist who told me what they needed to do and how to deal with them so as not to have any problems. I wouldn't let them do any routine maintenance on my car

They haven't sent me a letter yet as the recall has not become a VOSA one so they won't have your details to send it, best to put your VIN number in here http://master.skoda-auto.com/mini-apps/recall-actions and you will know if there is a recall, I just then phoned the dealer and they confirmed it and booked it in.
