In the news that car sales are down again but what is stopping Briskoda Forum users from changing

I only changed cars earlier this year so not in the market to change cars yet. If I where I would be holding off to see where  the market is going with electric cars, especially in prices as diesel continue to be demonised so they need to move forward with the next technology.

Voted for nothing wrong with current car, but nearly went for the nothing new in technology makes me want to change, as that's also very true.

A few reasons:

1. Nothing wrong with current car (well nothing major anyway)

2. Nothing new in car technology - I've got air con, climate control, cruise control and a stereo with USB input and Bluetooth. I don't need automatic lights/wipers, lane departure warnings, stop/start (and the expensive batteries that go with it), electric PAS that has no feel or over-assisted brakes. Not true of all new cars, but based on these reasons there aren't many new cars I'd want to own.

3. I don't want to lose thousands in depreciation.

4. I don't want to be tied in with monthly payments for 2+ years in case my circumstances change.

5. A new car might actually cost more to run. On my car I do most servicing and repairs myself. On a new car I'd have to have it done by a dealer/garage to keep the warranty. Warranty doesn't cover everything and if a claim is refused then you potentially have a dispute or an unexpected bill.

Where's the  SWMBO  option when you need it ?

have to wait for my PCP to end before I get something else. Will probably lease going forward

We're all in charge of our destiny and free to do as we please... once we have permission from SWMBO (AKA the fun police) :D

Nothing, just use the market opportunity, that is in the buyers favour, to play hard ball with sales exec/ managers / directors.

Great deals to be had , just be tough and hold your negotiating nerve.

I've kindof hit peak car for me.

Other than estate version of a 335d I'm not sure there is anything out there that is actually so much better I'd want it.

What I'd like now are multiple niche cars. Like a pickup and a Caterham7 and a GT and... and... and...

But also sales might be dropping but prices are pretty static. Nothing really looks like a great deal.

If I was to to return to the Skoda fold I'd probably get a Scout.

The way the votes are going at the moment lots of others are in agreement with you that if there is nothing wrong with the car, then there is very little that would tempt you into a new one.

Would rather own the car outright than be a slave to glorified hire charges for the next 4 years and be limited on mileage (plus I like to fix my own stuff :) )

To me, it appears that the new car market (in the UK at least) is heading the way of the mobile phone market - you pay a monthly fee for 3 years, then upgrade to the latest model, or pay a final fee and keep the one you have - to me that is extremely wasteful of resources (I know that a fair proportion of a new car is made from recycled materials) especially when a modern car has a lifespan of around 10 years plus. I will stick to buying my cars from the used market and paying outright for them I think.

I went for debt.. though I could technically afford a new one. I'm trying quite hard to save for something more worthwhile than a car.

Oh.. and if I did get a new one - would be a petrol mk2 FL VRS... so not really "new".

For me, the primary thing stopping me buying a new car and replacing my 176k miles / 11+ year old Mk1 Superb is that Skoda UK limits options and engines for lower trim Superbs. I have always bought my Skodas (3 so far) factory new, with cloth upholstery, 55+ profile tyres, manual gearbox, most powerful diesel in the range, rough road package and most winter options. Superb SE 6-spd manual with a 2.0 190bhp engine, rough road package  and heated seats/windscreen/steering wheel would suit me just fine, though ideally with standard cruise control rather than ACC and with 16in wheels.

But apparently, if you want to buy a 190bhp Superb in the UK from a dealer, it will have to be a bling 18in alloyed, leather/alcantara upholstered SE L Executive version.

Frankly, until Skoda UK frees up the car configurator to a level found e.g. in Irish car configurator, I'm not buying a new Skoda, at least not in the UK (might still decide to import one). If the Irish can get most options in RHD configuration, so could the UK.

Same here!

In actual fact the 'new car technology' but is actually something that puts me off a new car...   too much in the way of nanny electronics and systems and too little focus on 'driving'

Nothing wrong with mine - bought exactly a year ago and only 4 years old 30k. Other stuff also taking priority going forward; wedding, house renovations etc.

Don't like a lot of new cars with everything being electric-auto features, but I couldn't afford it anyway. I can just about keep this one on the road!

How many people actually buy new cars? I mean buy them outright not borrow.

Most cars must never be bought new. only borrowed then sold as used.

Ask a Car Dealership Employee.

Quite a lot actually buy new cars, go into dealerships and order and buy keepers or cars in stock.  Many buy Motorhomes and those are a large expense purchase.

Buying with Cash Money, or signing up to some finance offer and then paying that off and owning the vehicle outright.

Or borrow money and buy the vehicle.

As to the numbers of vehicles bought by private individuals or self employed or even bigger businesses there will be figures someplace no doubt in the UK.

Just bought brand new bargain priced car. Paid cash which was cheaper than any finance option available.

Went with debt, as using it for work as well i cant imagine the molly coddling id be doing..

Also i only ever want owe money on a mortgage. And im doing well on that plan.

I am interested in seeing where ev/phev goes next also in terms of swmbo next car though too..

Whats stopping me? 3 motorbikes a trike 2 cars and limited garage and drive space.

or

I'd get another Superb or 3

Nothing wrong with my car and nothing I want more without spending a bucket load of cash that I should be putting towards two weddings
