Buying a Rapid advice please

Featured Replies

I'm looking at a Rapid fastback 1.6 Cr 90 greentech for my girlfriend, and would appreciate advice from other rapid owners. I have a obd Bluetooth plug and the torque and vag dpf apps if they let me plug it in.

1. Emissions fix. The car has had the fix done, and has 24,000 miles on the clock. What should I look out for when I test drive it? Have people had the fix and it gone ok? Most news I hear about it is bad.

2. Are there niggles that aren't obvious that I can check for so I could get the dealer to sort them out.

The test drive is Saturday morning, and thanks in advance!

Regarding the fix, problems seem to be high mileage cars (60k+), that had extended oil changes 15k+ miles.    The valve stems start to wear and if already worn fix can finish them quickly.  You tend to hear of the minority that winge, not silent majority.   There is some evidence running on super diesel helps post fix

You didn't specify age, difficult to guess what might else need looking at without knowing age.   If it has been used for lots of local journeys (bit stupid by original owner to have bought a diesel greenline if that was the plan), then might need a good clean of filters.   Might be worth getting dealer to do a full service (they will probably expect to do inspection service anyway, so haggle for just the incremental cost)

At 24k miles, check tyres treads, might be worth front-back swap if unevenly worn.

If previous owner didn't leave a/c on during winter could get dry seals and leak of refridgerant

How much warranty left (depends on age), if anything needs doing ask for a warranty fix

Thanks guys, it's a 64 plate, and they did MOT yesterday, so 3yrs old exactly I'd guess. I'm sure they will do a service, they did on the Octavia I bought from them in Feb.

I'll find out about the manufacturer warranty, but there will also be a 1yr skoda used warranty on it which comes with breakdown.

I just sold a 3 year old one at 34000 miles.  Though it passed the MoT, a few months later it needed 4 tyres, 4 Discs and sets of pads, 3 wipers etc. With the big bills approaching I got rid of it.

It seemed like all the consumables were ready for the bin at that age, so check the condition of your proposed purchase with a toothcomb.

Do people still get an independent engineer to look over used cars before buying?

I seem to remember the AA did it quite cheaply for members.

Can do MOT upto month early and date it to start on 3rd birthday.  Check the exact date because the original 3 year warranty is probably more comprehensive than a used warranty.

Can't remember if 64 plate is euro5 engine, I think it is.  If it has a DPF get it cleaned.  Doing only 8000 miles per year in a diesel suggests lots of short journeys, which will clog particulate filters.  If it was a euro6 diesel engine with loads of short journeys, avoid it (petrol will be fine), diesels clog filters until the engine warms through which doesn't happen driving few minutes from cold.

Step 1: Cast your eye over this Facebook group: The Volkswagen Diesel Customer Forum (Emmisions Scandal).

Step 2: Walk away from buying aforementioned Rapid.

Really? You know thats only £500 of parts if you fit them yourself which as the warranty was ended you'd be fine to do. You'll say next it needed a wash!! A new one depreciates several thousand just driving off the forecourt!

I'll make sure I check there's nothing about to expire though, thanks.

Well, I scrapped my previous 10 year old car when the mot bill was going to be an unknown figure but above 700 quid.

I would have kept the 3 year old Toledo even with the bills, but instead bought one of the ridiculously cheap promo ones that were just on the market for 8.5k off list.

I just wanted to make you aware of possible additional expenses. :)

Which is why diesel prices are falling drastically, basic economics supply and demand.

A very quick check on autotrader shows virtually 3000 diesels 3-5 years old but only 2000 petrol Skoda trying to find homes.  They were never sold new in a ratio of 3:2 so clearly the diesels are sticking
