Skoda have under estimated the 220's power I think

Featured Replies

Hi  everyone is it just me or is the 2.0TSi 220 more than 220bhp, the reason is on a slight hill yesterday it totally wiped the floor with a 3.0 Maserati Ghibli and I kind of wondered if Skoda have actually under estimated the power of this engine. If they have then at least it's under estimated it rather than over estimated it

May very well be the case,VAG have always been speculated of such things.

I was more than impressed when an x6 couldn't keep up with my 190(it was up until around 200km/h,i had to go on the exit soon so i lifted off).

I definetly didn't expect that outcome.

What you never know is how hard the other car was going. They could have just been on half throttle.

They publish MINIMUM figures while showing max HP/PS & Nm, because the power has to be achieved at sea levels

& also at heights much higher than the 3,500 ft you might get to in the UK, 1 mile / 1.6km high even., global sales,

and at extreme temperatures much higher than the 35*oC you might drive in in the UK, and give 220ps on Unleaded 95 ron.

In the UK you are pretty much running at the best sort of weather conditions to get the best out of your car.

Then there are those racing someone not actually racing them or in some diesel powered sporty looking car.

What does it matter? It is plenty for 99% of people 99% of the time. In fact in everyday legal driving it is 99% likely that 99% will only use it 1% of the time ;) ;););)

@Sagalout I've just been drooling over the reviews of the new McLaren 720. You mean I wouldn't be able to use all that power on the road ???!!!!

You just saved me a few quid! :D

Well maybe just to 'fly' over the sleeping policeman that otherwise will remove your undercarriage at any speed above 5mph :D

"As the horsepower in modern cars steadily rises so the congestion steadily lowers the average possible speed of your car; this is known as progress."

(not my words and I cant remember where it comes from but----)

I only ever use the full string of horses for those 'tight' overtakes. Good fun indeed:biggrin::biggrin:

I dynoed mine the other day TDI150 gave 162.2 so little bit more

They are fast as in they can do 150mph (apparently) but the car is certainly not rapid. Its a big car to get moving.

I bet the maserati is the nicer place to be though. Being surrounded in italian leather and style.

The Ghibli is by official figures about 200kg heavier kerb weight and 50 bhp more so swings and roundabouts on the road,

and then you need to know they are really going for it.

Not really, the Ghibli is an awful car with ditto interior. It’s a wart on the grand reputation Maserati once had.

If you want to have a laugh or two at its expense, have a look at Doug Demuro’s video about it on YouTube.

I’d take a Superb over that hunk of junk any day.

Would be interesting to compare to the Skoda OneApp figures, at one stage mine stated max bhp used was 191 with a max rpm around 3500. That was early days when I was playing around with the app but taking it easy on the car. 191bhp would be well within a standard deviation from the stated power and I took it with a pinch of salt anyways but after having your car on the dyno it would be interesting to see what the Skoda OneApp says.

My 230 will only do 155 mph, it has a Limiter on it    ;)

Won't a mint humbug keep her quiet?

You need to account for manufacturing tolerances too, could easily make -/+ ~%5 difference from car-to-car.   I think manufacturers are very sneaky with taking advantage of this.

The 5F Cupra was initially a 280, then a 290 and now a 300 and obviously SEAT were keen to shout about the BHP hike each time but most 280 owners said there cars were pushing 300bhp from the factory anyway.  Makes you wonder if there's any difference in a 217ps vs 227ps vRS, other than some £'s.

There was member on here who has a  Pre FL 230 and had it on some rollers and it was pushing out over 260 bhp

Crikey, that's mental!  I bet front tyre wear wasn't the best

If you plug the stats of the Superb into this calculator:

http://www.torquestats.com/modified/index.php?pid=calculator&action=calculate_times&drive=FWD&bhp=220&weight=1475&submit=Calculate

It says 7s 0-60.  So I kind of assume that the quoted power is about right.

Same story for the 280 4x4

http://www.torquestats.com/modified/index.php?pid=calculator&action=calculate_times&drive=4WD&bhp=276&weight=1560&submit=Calculate

Added 280 stats

Of course the other possibility is that the person at Skoda used the same calculator because they could be bothered to go and measure it properly.

I have the 217 bhp tsi vRs Octavia. When on the dyno a few weeks ago it came up as 240.4 bhp.

^^^ Was that running 95 ron or Super Unleaded?  All else standard?

Tesco momentum. All standard. There was another Octavia estate the same as mine that did 237 bhp.

I like that calculator

4.6 and 8.9 0-60 for my cars.

The 1.4 works quite well and seems to suit the car especially with the DSG.

I ran 2 x 0-100kmh tests the other day via launch control. Both readings via the Skoda One app came in at 5.024 & 5.029 sec. I was suitably impressed. Again Skoda One app has recorded my highest horsepower at 282hp, I fairly accurate number I think for a 280Tsi. Only a dyno test will show the true horsepower and a run down the 1/4 mile will show the true time.
