VRS loss of all power on motorway

Featured Replies

Evening folks. As per the title,  was doing a steady 70 on the motorway for around 50 miles this afternoon felt as though the brakes applied a couple of times then there was no power just a steady run down to stop on the hard shoulder.  Initial thoughts were turbo knackered but no smoke whatsoever, no noises/ bangs of any description.

Car turns over but won't start.

Back home I've scanned for faults and only one showing,  19464,  crank position sensor??

Any ideas,  anybody?!

Merry Christmas all

Big clue now bold italic underscore.

Sarcasm eh ken,  many thanks

Was wondering if this is likely to be electrical ( sensor)  or timing related ( mech)

Merry Christmas, now get back to your wee dram!

Sensor, corrosion in connection to sensor, or wiring breakage would be my top three, not necessarily in that order.

The crank sensor or its wiring.

Thanks guys

Now towed back home and had chance to have a proper look under the bonnet.  Coolant level looks a little high but is clean, a little smell of plastic/ rubber burning.....  Will check around the sensor in daylight.

Don’t want to spread doom and despair, but the exact same thing happened to me on a 1.4TDi just after I had purchased it.It turned out to be a worn crankshaft thrust bearing that had fell into the sump letting the crankshaft move away from the inductor ring.New thrust bearings sorted it and even though the endfloat was excessive it worked fine for a couple of years until I changed cars.Check the endfloat on the crankshaft before getting too deep into sensors etc.

It's a different engine, the 1.9 PD bottom end is utterly bulletproof unlike the 1.4. However the electronics are just as unreliable.

Sooo now the Christmas cheer has worn off I've taken a look today.

First thing 19464 fault code points to cam sensor.  My error yesterday,  however I believe that this can flag up after a nearly flat battery.  Cleared the code and charged battery,  code gone.

However car will not start,  turns over but zilch.

Spoken to a sparky this afternoon who's suggested possible " crank " sensor due to no movement at all from rev counter when turning engine over OR relay 109.... I don't hear the fuel pump prime when turning on the ignition.

Other thing bugging me now is could this be a turbo issue?  Had one go in an older fabia,  felt the same in similar circumstances but there was lots of smoke.  This time nothing

Thanks

Chris

It should start with a FUBAR turbo or a popped boost pipe; it would just be very black smokey and lacking in power.

Timing belt possibly, whip the top belt cover off and watch while you crank it.

Okay,  so I've done a full vcds scan this morning and got the following

19464 cam position sensor G40

P3008-00-00

Signal out of range

01317 control module in instrument cluster J285 79-00 check module for faults.

Timing belt was changed in February and looks sound when viewed turning the engine over.

I'm wondering if the belt may have jumped a tooth or 2 and knocked the timing out?

The morning of the breakdown the car had an awkward start,  almost like when youve left the xar in gear!

Chris

unplug the cam sensor and see if it will start. In my experience without the sensor connected it should start although will take a few more turns.

Found the problem....

Half turned the engine a few times to move the the timing belt around and discovered quite a few stripped Teeth on the belt.

Relieved we've found the issue but a little apprehensive as to what other damage may have been caused.

Timing belt kit was done back in February this year.

Thanks for all your input

@chris-H Belt done by whom? If it was a garage you have a definite case for damages since a professionally fitted EOM kit has a 12 months parts and labour warranty.

Thought so, take it back to the garage and get them to redo the belt using a Gates belt, accept no substitute.

Yep was a well known independent vw/audi specialist in the NW. They used the oem kit including waterpump.

My worry is the potential damage inside. Is this likely or could I have got away with it.....

She's only done 80,000 miles,  gutted

@chris-H - Well it's their problem since it's either a faulty belt or poor workman**** (sic) on their part. On the plus side, if it still turns over on the crank nose there may not be much internal damage.

Fingers crossed ken.

That is nasty. Hope the engine is OK :(

Anybody care to comment on the state of the outside of the belt?! It's like this all the way round,  almost looks like its started to melt... Or had something rubbing

Nope, it just looks like a nasty cheap belt, if it doesn't have the VAG markings and part number it's not a genuine belt.

Jeez, not even my 184k original cambelt looked that frigged on the non driven side when I did it earlier in the year.

Interesting,  when the job was done back in February I was given the old bits back in the new packaging.  The kit was definitely in oem packaging.  I've specifically asked for gates / oem replacement ( as I did last time).

Water pump siezed or tensioner issue? Something's caused that belt to go doo-lally.
