Fabia 1.4 Classic Tdi having starting probem

After lots of research i haven't found any solution of my problem. 

 

My Skoda fabia classic tdi is having starting problem and engine stops while running.

 

Detail:  Whenever i try to start car after hours , it starts on second try. on first try it cranks fine but doesn't get started.

Sometimes engine stops while running and i need to stop the car and then after 2-3 tries it get started. but in first 2-3 tries engine get started and tuns off in another second.

Welcome to the forum, is this the Mk1 Fabia?  if so, I've had one of those, and with the 3-cylinder 1.4tdi unit.

 

Can you tell us a bit about the car (and add some key facts to your "profile" re car, and where you are, in case a nearby member can come and help!)

Some idea of its age, mileage, service history might help too.  Is this only happening in cold weather? Are you in UK/northern hemisphere?  Does glow-plugs light come on briefly before you attempt to start?  Is engine air inlet clear, air filter clean?  When its running, doe it smoke under load? Do you use supermarket fuel? Have you tried using a fuel additive?

 

There is a section on here regards Diagnostics and VCDS, you can search to find someone near you, as a diagnostic test to reveal some fault codes would be highly worthwhile.

Members are often willing to do this for free or minimal payment.

Do you get any dashboard warning lights when it won't start, or dies on you?

 

My initial thought is fuel starvation caused by a blocked up fuel filter;         Has this vital component ever been replaced?

Some older diesel cars of mine had a stop solenoid within the fuel pump, these got dirty connections, or jammed, or failed.  

But not sure how the Pumpe Duse engines do this. And can't recall if they have a low-pressure fuel pump in the tank to push fuel up to the engine-driven high-pressure fuel pump.

 

The fuel filler cap must have some sort of breather valve to let air in as the fuel is consumed. Is the fuel filler cap very dirty, or been damaged?

I may still have a Haynes manual somewhere, will go look on my shelves.......

PD engines don't need a fuel cut off solenoid as the injectors are electrical/mechanical so engine can be easily stopped by the ECU. They also don't need a high pressure fuel pump due to the injector design.

 

If no obvious codes are present the first thing I would do is check the fuel connections on the fuel filter. If it has the fuel thermostat fitted to the top make sure that is seated correctly (looks like a black plastic 'T' piece) Check the connections to and from the tandem pump on the side of the engine (this is a vacuum pump and intermediate fuel pump in one) Also check connections where the flexible fuel pipe goes to the hard lines across the engine

 

You can also check the fuel lines to the lift pump under the back seat. 

 

Air ingress can be a pain on diesels, the first problem I had to diagnose was on this very engine in a polo with similar symptoms. Turned out the fuel line to the tandem pump was loose causing a very long crank in the morning before it started up.

TB/ anti-shudder valve may be sticking closed?
