K&N Air filter

Featured Replies

vborovic,

If you mean the UK will be out, best not get onto that, as we all know the UK will be keeping the EU countries in the lifestyle they have become accustomed to for many years to come.

I will be in Hungary.

PS

Where Suzuki's get built.

PPS, K&N's can be invaluable.

  • No it will not pay for it's self unless you are very good at cleaning and treating. Or doing a bit of offroading / wading, working in a dusty environment.   Best buy nice clean filters

  • £7 for an air filter from carparts4less (same company as Eurocarparts)

  • Those K&N style cone filters and their performance gains are a bunch of baloney. Engineers spend countless hours to design airboxes with favourable performance characteristics and then some dunce

Yes, meant the UK - didn't know where you're from, but nice to know we're be neighbors ... :D

In Scotland where it can get wet and roads can flood.

If people still want to chew me around for that (once again, my car, my money, my experiment and no specific expectations at this point), feel free to keep the forum clean and remove the related posts, because the arguments here lead to nowhere

You've already committed yourself financially to the product, so of course you will want to defend it. Human nature being what it is, we don't want to hear that what we've invested ourselves in might not be as good as it looks. (You can read the CGON thread in the General section for a more extreme case of this)

At this point, I'm posting for the benefit of those who haven't yet sunk their money into one of these things, and are therefore more open to criticism of the product.

Quite a debate going here! :D

I also talked to Steve at the garage I use (Statllers, pretty well known in my area) about swapping the standard air filter on my 3.6 vr6 for something else and was advised it wasn’t worth it as the standard air box is from the 2011-generation RS3 and is already good for more power than the standard 3.6 v6 engine makes in the Superb or R36. Parts-bin engineering on the Superb v6! :)

That from someone who could have easily sold me a more expensive part as he was replacing the air filter anyway I considered honest advice.

I (or rather adifferent VW specialist) did put a K&N panel filter into a mk3 Golf GTI I had many years ago as I was doing about 25,000 mostly motorway miles a year at the time, servicing every 10k miles. It seemed better to clean rather than replace every time. It was removed after a couple of years because of problems with dirt being deposited on the (I think - it was a long time ago!) air flow sensor. Perhaps it was over-oiled, or not enough oil? Or maybe something else intoducing dirt? No way to know for sure now of course but it seemed to cure the problem at the time.

I’m interested to hear how @vborovic gets on with the K&N over replacing the paper filter and if there are any positives or negatives!

Cheers,

Steve

Well, not exactly, but it makes you feel better, feel free to continue with that conclusion.

secondly, I want to see for my self, with my money, on my car, what the dedicated K&N filter can do (or can't) ... do I have high expectations regarding it - no, I don't, but at least I'll have some comparison to the old filter and the parameters I've recorded with it

I'm done with this topic, since everything is obviously known about this filter on this engine, so no point in further wasting ink :)

My 1.6d has an air filter which is always clean when I change it every 15,000km.

Therefore, there can be only one conclusion. My 1.6d does not suck as much as a mighty 3.6  ;)

Drive in a dirty diesel city like Edinburgh where you might sit in traffic beside polluting busses and taxi's and you might need a new air filter every service even if you have a 60 ps 1.2 petrol engine.
