I own the the monte 1.2 tsi and get 48mpg average mixed driving mainly A + B roads. On the motorway I get early 50s

Id buy  the tsi 105 over the  tdi far nicer drive all round more refined and quieter too. I have driven the tdi model too quiet a few times as well. 

Id avoid the 12 v model really. Our monte is the 85 bhp model tsi.
