Dash Cam on auto-dim mirror

Featured Replies

Hello,

Sorry if this had been asked before, but can I fit a dashcam to the auto-dimming mirror in my Superb MkIII ? If so, what's the best way to do it? I'm concerned that I risk obscuring the sensors or compromising the mirror in some other way.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Graham

Hi Graham and welcome. Apologies - I'm not sure I understand the question. Which dashcam do you have? Most attach direct to the windscreen - I've not seen one that attaches to the mirror.

It's possible the OP is referring to the Nextbase mirror dashcam, or similar.

This completely covers the existing mirror, so you will not have the auto-dipping function at all.

It isn't clear from the description how the mirror performs at night, although one of the reviews says that it is tinted, so there isn't any glare, apparently.

Thanks @daveo138 and that would make sense.

FWIW I have an RAC03 that covers the mirror.  I left it I couple of months before fitting to see if I would miss the auto-dim - I didn't. I really like having an almost invisible dashcam with audible and visual speed camera alerts. Maybe the OP will confirm what he is planning to fit.

Thanks for your replies.

The dashcam is a Nextbase 412GW and can be mounted anywhere that sees the GPS I suppose, but my neighbour has the same device mounted on his mirror. It's unobtrusive there and I thought it would be an ideal place on my Skoda, but I was concerned that it might interfere with the autodimming mirror function somehow.

Perhaps I could ask where other group members have theirs mounted? When I know where I'm putting it I was thinking of having it permanently fitted. Any advice there?

Thanks again,

Graham

Can't comment on the Nextbase. Re fitting, i had mine done by my local auto electrician but its pretty straightforward to do it yourself and there are quite a few threads on here about that. Just make sure you wire it to an ignition-switched fuse or it will draw current from the battery constantly and could drain it.

If it’s the frameless mirror design I believe it’s photosensitive glass so a rearward facing sensor… same as a normal auto dim sensor. It also ties up with the ambient light/rain sensor at the back left of the mirror, but if your auto lights/wipers work then you should be fine. A quick test with a torch will confirm.

I have a small dash cam fitted between the mirror and screen (left side) on the Superb and because it interfered greatly with the auto wipers in a previous A6 I mounted it a little higher up. It still obscures the top of the sensor slightly, but no issues with anything. Maybe Skoda doesn’t use this for rain sensing like Audi?

In saying all that, I can’t remember ever needing the auto dim as I have rear tints… will give it a try.

Thanks for the advice everyone: that's all very useful info. I'll have a go at fitting it and post here when it's done.
