2011 3T5 "Ignition on" tapping points

Featured Replies

I've got a 2011 3T5 (3T6 according to the VIN) Combi.

It comes with a factory fitted Blaupunkt 10 Channel AMP and Admunsen+ Navi.

I had installed some headrest DVDs for the kids and tapped the cigarette lighter, but have noticed these have permanent 12V (what a stupid idea).

It seems both the Admunsen and AMP are turned on/off via the canbus and have permanent 12V (red/yellow) wires to both the 12V and UB+ connections.

I found in the forums someone said fuse 12 (unassigned) in the dash provided accessory on power.

Actually, in my car it provides power in the 3rd position i.e. as in the start position (manual terminology)

All other fuse points seem to have permanent 12V.

I wanted to tap on position two i.e. Ignition On (using the manual's wording - or accessory as i know it). position one being off

Alternatively (preferably), it would be ok to get power so long as the key is in the car.

I also replaced the Admunsen+ with chinese 2din wince and it is only power via the UB+ which turns the unit on when the key is in the 2nd position (accessory/ignition on).

It seem the unit then responds to the canbus command to switch on. If the +12V is connected then the unit doesn't turn off.

This works fine in this config, but unfortunately is not something i can use to drive the headrest DVDs which I want to power on in the same way.

i.e. so long as the key is position 2, kids can watch.

Grateful for any assistance

Hi,

Check the posts on here regarding dash cameras and you'll find photos of where to tap off the fuse box.

Is there a specific post you are referring to Matt. I searched under "dash cameras" and the post don't have anything.

I know how to tap, but as I said, all my fuses appear to be live, except Fuse 12 which is on when the key is in the third position i.e. start

(that's what i am using at the moment - but ****es the kids off when i turn the motor off)

With the ignition switched off check which fuse positions are not receiving power. Those are the ones that are switched with the ignition. Try and choose one that's not safety critical in case your tap causes weird behaviour.

that's my point...apart from 12, they all appear to be live

Make sure you're checking the connector at the top of the fuse slot as that is the one that supplies voltage from the battery side.

I am testing with a voltmeter at the top of the Fuse 19. e.g. the clock / instruments also appears to feed the admunsen+

when the fuse is removed, they are all of course, but the connection appears to have +12 permanently - suggesting everything is turned on via the canbus signals.

Fuse 12 on the other hand clearly is off when the key is on position one or two but is powered in position three

When I was fitting a hardwire kit for my dashcam last year I found that fuse 8 was switched by the ignition rather than a CAN signal. I've since removed the tap there since fitting towing electrics which use fuses 8 & 9 but it worked fine all along. Worth a check.

I'm pretty sure I used the rear wiper fuse, The search function on here is smarter than I am, and I can't find the link, but there are photos I posted and others of the fuse box connection.

I'd say that there is zero wrong with your memory.  I found this thread which has some photos of just what you suggest:

So guys, i managed to check all your points and they are the same as what i already have. might be a misunderstanding, so i repeat the key (mine is LHD).

4 positions

1 = Off

2 = Accessories

3 = Ignition On (motor after start)

4 = Start (momentary)

I am looking for position 2 i.e. when you turn your car off but leave the radio on, etc.

Fuse 12 (unused), Fuse 19 (clock/book e.g. instrument panel), Fuse 8, (tow bar), Fuse 39 (wiper) are all either permanently powered or powered on position 3.

Fuse 19 is the dash instruments and radio (admunsen+).

it is permanently powered and;

- dash is on when switched to position 2

- dash and radio stays on when switched to position 1

- dash stays on after key removed but radio goes off.

The above indicates that they are all turned on via can signals rather than the key.

The problem with using the position 3 Ignition On is;

- kids watching DVD

- stop the car, but to turn the motor off, key must be switched to position 2

- position 2 switches off all the above fuses (except 19 which is permanently powered)

  this means kids movie is instantly turned off, even though desired position is to leave the accessories working.

According to the manual for a diesel car, the glow plugs are fired up on position 2 but the fuse for this is under the bonnet.

Considering the poor performance i now have since having the software correction for the diesel scandal, and the fact there seems to be no common sense to their wiring,

I am really getting to the point of frustration, where my next car is going to be a Japanese one.

There is no 'official' position 2 on the Superb (and most VAG brand cars built in the last 20 years). While there's a switch activated at it, there's no stop on the ignition barrel like there was years ago and it's not used for much on the car.

The radio is operable even when the ignition is off so beware using that as an indicator of functionality.

You are correct when looking at the manual for a diesel car

1 = Off                                                [Position 1 - interruption of fuel supply, ignition switched off, engine off, the steering can be locked]

2 = Accessories

3 = Ignition On (motor after start)    [Position 2 - heating glow plugs on, ignition switched on]

4 = Start (momentary)                       [Position 3 - start engine]

But reality is; after the key is inserted turning to position 2  triggers the dash on, so the position/notch must be connected to something.

Whether or not it can drive a 12V trigger is the problem.

I want to solve this for two reasons;

1) the kids DVDs have no way of turning off with a time-out

2) Chinese head unit i put in, requires the +12V to be disconnected i.e. it is only driven by UB+ (thought this is low current only)

    solve i am guessing the instability i have in the unit, is because the +12V is not connected

I just looked up the owner's manual and the same three positoins are listed for petrol and diesel. The only difference is that P2 on the petrol is ignitoin on, while P2 o n the diesel is glow plugs on. The old 'accessory' P2 you keep referring to is no longer used> While there is still a switch at that position on the ignition barrel which may activate some basic functions, it is not a feature designed for the driver to use the way it used to be. VAG models have been like this for the last 20 years or more (my old 1999 Passat was the same), and there is no stop or 'click' in the barrel to tell you that the key is in that position.

If you really want to do what you are trying to do, you wil need to get hold of the wiring diagram for the car and see what way it is set up. The cheapest way to do this is to buy an hour's subscripion to erWin (about €10) and download it from there.

cheers, goto correct you on one thing though.

There is definitely a position on the barrel.

You click up of the first switch, and then again to the ignition on, then push and release to start.

When you turn off, you have a clear click/lock into the position and need to make a 2nd press to go to the off position.

Will check out the erwin you recommended.

cheers

Thanks, I was searching for dash cam, not dashcam:blink:

FYI - (without making an advertisement)

I ditched the Hizpo 8" HU for an Isudar 8" (which has canbus decoder built-in) - plug n play.

Now the unit turns off correctly when the key is removed (but unfortunately, i still have the issue with losing system settings.

so it looks like the red/yellow car wire that feeds to both the +12 and UB+ on the Admunsen+ cuts off when the key is removed.

Does anyone know if this is indeed the case?

If so, i could you this wire to feed the rear monitors, will have to take a tap from the fuse box for the UB+
