Rear dash cam power source Octavia lll Est

Featured Replies

I would like advice on how to wire a rear facing dash cam to an ignition switched 12v.

Front camera wired to fuse box as per many tips on the forums.

I have now fitted a dash cam at the rear, thin neodymium magnet under the head lining and another magnet glued to camera mount, saves sticking camera to the rear window.

Routed power cable round under the tailgate seal to the 12v socket plugged in all works fine. But this is the first car I have owned where the 12v/cig lighter socket is permanently live.

Forgot to unplug twice now and battery dead after a few days parked.

Could I use power from the rear light cluster such as the daytime running lights? I have looked at the connector but cannot determine which wire does what apart from the return.

Would the DTL wire be able to run the dash cam, 1amp max I believe?

This is a project which I'm planning, but I know I was having a looking at running a power cable down the length of the car and having it powered off the same output I plan to have the front mounted one off.

If your camera has a ciggy lighter connection, you could always wire in a ciggy lighter socket, with a fuse, from the fuse board at the front, plug in the camera (possibly tape it in so it doesn't come off) and have it hidden behind the fascia on which ever side the camera is mounted.

I can't see if being too hard to route a cable from the front to the back. Either tuck it under the plastic along the bottom of the doors, or carefully remove them and have them going along with the rest of the cars' electrics

No - the daytime running lights just illuminate at the front of the car (well they do on mine)

I have a split charge relay PCT Volton ZR1220 with a 12V plug on the input(plugged into the boot 12V socket)  an a couple of 12V sockets on the output
that run a dash-cam and a cool-box when I have it in the boot. Works a treat. I've cable-tied it into one of the boot side cubbys. Basically when I start the car the dash cam and cool-box (when in the boot!) turn on within a few seconds and when the engine turns off they turn off a few seconds later. I suppose the only potential issue is they turn off when stop/start also turns the engine off

Rear Wiper Motor has a Switched 12v supply for Self-Parking of the Motor.

Hi.....I've also got a dashcam that I'm wanting to fit in the rear window but having trouble feeding the wiring behind the window trim.  Your idea of using the magnet sounds interesting.  Not sure which dashcam you're using.  Given that it is a very strong magnet, just wondering if it has any detrimental effect to the operation of the dashcam.

My dash cam is a dual camera one, so the power is fed from the front camera to the rear one.

I have taken my power from the fuse box behind the glove box, so I'm wondering if you can run a feed cable from a switched supply fuse from there along the sill trim up to the boot, behind the rear quarter trim, up through the cable gaiter and in to the back door area. An earth can be taken from here. The plastic trim will need to be removed to gain access and also the cable gaiter is better to be removed to aid getting the cable through. Once you have power in the back door area, then it's just a case of fixing the camera.

Good luck however you choose to install the camera.

There is a thread on here on how to use a spare switched fuse tap to power the 12v sockets I’ll see if I can find it.

Took me about 30 mins to do.

ah.. here you are... knew I would find it... click here

Thanks for all the suggestions, I have decided to go with bigjohn's use of the  split charge relay PCT Volton ZR1220. Awaiting it's delivery today.

I particularly did not want the hassle of running a cable front to back knowing I would'nt have the skill or patience to do a neat job.

The rear camera is a MIO 538 and is unaffected by the magnets.

Thanks for that.  I'll now look into the posibility of using a magnet for the install.
