It’s downloading now and taking its time. I have the 2018 maps already if that helps. It won’t be ready to unzip until tomorrow anyway at this rate.

No, this download is for Columbus only not Amundsen.

There are separate downloads for Columbus & Amundsen (usually the Amundsen data is smaller).

  • With the Columbus you can use whatever card you want - you're installing onto the HD, the maps aren't read from the card.

  • These updates are for the newer MIB style Columbus rather than the RNS-510 style fitting in your Superb.   You'll need a map update DVD, the latest is V16. A dealer will charge loads but the

  • Yep, it'll work fine in your unit. Can't see any reason why not.

A question for those more knowledgeable than I...

I'm down here in New Zealand, and there isn't/hasn't been a map update for us since at least 2014.

Skoda NZ don't want to know about it and point you in the direction of a 3rd party that can allegedly supply updated maps for $1200.

Is there anything anywhere, hidden away in the update portal's archives that would help me?

There are always many posts for this from Aus/NZ users when the maps are released in Europe but I dont think anyone has been successful to download the good maps for your region.

The European downloads dont include maps for this region.

Maybe make another post as there are many active users from the southern hemisphere who might be able to help you.

Shoot me down if this is wrong but I think this update is only for Columbus, either MIB1 or MIB2, it will not work with Amundsen

Have you tried these in NZ? Maps for VW and Skoda are the same...

This is a good shout if you dont mind trying a 30Gb download. @Alfashark

For the european maps, many users use the VW download for the Golf/Passat as they are usually released a month or so before the Skoda version.

As the base headunit is identical the VW maps work fine out of the box.

However, if I remember correctly, even with the correct maps, the update wouldnt work for the Skoda users as it said something like "checksum not valid" or "region not valid".

I'll see if I can find some of the older posts with some more info.

I have a 2016 vrs with Amundsen MIB2. Downloaded these files and copied MIB2 across to the skoda SD card and it isn't recognised.

The way the files are laid out is more akin to the MIB1 format and I'd be interested if anyone else has got it to work on an MIB2 Amundsen

If you put your vehicles VIN in and then select the 12Gb file, download it, fetch the Skoda SD card from your car, pop it into your PCs card reader ,format it and then tell the downloader where to unpack it (namely where the newly formatted Skoda SD card is) so in my case it was drive K or N (can't remember which), leave it to unpack it and then once finished it should work fine, mine does.

How long does the update take on the Columbus?

I'd say about an hour on my MIB1 Columbus from SD. Though it does it in the background and can be interrupted. So just kick it off and it will update as you use the car normally.

Just be warned though, the nav becomes briefly unavailable and the unit has to reboot once the update reaches close to 100%. This nearly caught me out yesterday, luckily I knew the first bit of my journey and didn't rely on nav, even though I had it set.

as ahenners said its about an hour from an SD-card.

Its marginally quicker (maybe 45minutes) if you copy from a USB-stick or USB-hard-drive but the limiting factor is the speed of the target device Inside the Columbus main unit.

It will stop & restart without issues so you dont have to worry about keeping the ignition on until its finished.

Much better than my 2018 Volvo which has to stay turned on until the 32gb map update has finished otherwise you have to start from 0% again next time.

Do you need to extract into the root of the SD card? I just tried the update but the files were in a folder alongside my MP3's and it didn't find it.

Yes, so in the root you should have the MIB1, MIB2 folders and a metadata file if I remember correctly. When you plug the SD in, it should come up software update towards the top of the screen. Then you can go into nav, map, settings and update.

Worked for me having the above folders/file alongside my music, though it doesn't seem like I can play music again from the card until I remove the Map update files.

As above, it has to be in the root directory but it doesnt mater if there are additional folders/files which are in different root folders.

I upgrade mine using a USB harddrive full of movies & mp3s as a backup.

3 hour to download 15 minutes to unzip to a SDXC card and 50 minutes to install.

Why is the download so slow - I downloaded three episodes of The Chase from my PVR encoded them for my Columbus ans watched two of them by the time this finished?

Slow Skoda servers and/or limited bandwidth connection from them to the internet backbone.

It's not unusual for download speeds to be limited by the server not the connection from the exchange to the house.

I've known it take minutes or hours. Just depends how busy the servers are I suppose.

Exactly - the download speed is determined by the slowest and/or most congested section of the route from server to PC. If the "weakest link" is the server then sometimes it will fly and other times snail mail could be faster!

Not as far as I know. Certainly not by doing anything with standard coding equipment

Another New Zealand (2014) vRS newb owner here, with regards to our no map update since 2014, i managed to find a vin number from a 2018 vrs (located in nz), entered this into the web portal and there is a update available - MRM 2018, both cars have columbus units in them. anyone know if this will work on my 2014 vRS? Also downloading maps from the VW update page to try since they are the same units.

Any info much appreciated

If its a NZ registered car then it should work especially if its an official update from Skoda.

The unit will tell you when you insert the update if it is valid for your car or not so you cant do any harm if it doesnt work. (except the 29Gb download....)

same for me, especially downloading just after the maps are released it can take several hours.

You have to concider VAG sell millions of cars each year & have had the same head units for several years now which equates to a lot of users who could potentially try to download maps at the same time.
