Tyre Replacement Advice

Featured Replies

The front tyres on my Yeti are getting ready for replacement, 2 1/2 years old and done 25k miles. Currently factory fitted originals Pirelli Cinturato P7 225/5- R17 94 W.  Any suggestions with what to replace with, ideally looking for a mid priced good all rounder.

1000 miles/year, then.  What sort of roads generally?  Motorway, urban, rural?

Missed a zero!  Too early in the morning!  Sorry...

My last 2WD Yeti (admittedly a TDi) came with Dunlop SP01 and at 35k miles I swapped the front tyres to Goodyear EfficientGrip performance. The new tyres were much quieter and noticeably more "grippy".

My next Yeti (4WD TDi) came with Pirelli Pzero Rosso, which lasted for ages, but we're relatively noisey and noticeably poor in the wet. I swapped all 4 at 45k miles for Michelin Cross Climate's. These are excellent in all conditions (and are quiet) and seem to be hard wearing, given they still have around 4mm tread depth remaining, after 25k miles.

Michelin claim grip is maintained from new to the legal tread depth limit, but I've noticed a recent drop off in grip and will aim to change at a tread depth around 2-3 mm.

The Michelin argument regarding tread depth seems to be based on minimising cost to fleets and doesn't match my observations. Here: Tread depth and here: https://www.rac.co.uk/drive/advice/tyres/checking-tyre-tread/

Falken come top of the mid range tyres (Tyre reviews - mid range) but I've never owned a car fitted with these, so can't comment with personal experience.

More here (tyre reviews): Goodyear / Michelin

I have 4 Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres that came off my last Yeti when I changed to CrossClimates, they have done 2k ish, you’d have to collect but I’d be happy for you to have them, FOC.

That's a great deal! I have Efficient Grips and they are excellent, quiet with good grip and handling. Go get them.

Another vote here fo the Goodyear Efficient Grips.

I was also a fan of the Dunlop SP01 too. Went through 3 full sets on our Octavia Scout (same wheel and tyre size as the equivelent Yeti).

I have fitted Nexen all climate tyres and so much better than the Pirelli P zero rosso's very good grip and wear so far and quieter too £68.00 each!

I have Nexan N-priz on mine as well excellent tyres for the price 15k so far and 5mm left, roadholding is good both wet, dry and in snow. Will be replacing with N-blue next time as N-priz are no longer made.

Mine came with Nexen N'Fera RU1  (1.2tsi DSG) built about early Sept 2016

Still over 5mm of tread on fronts (car has done 16.5k miles),

I will get them changed front-back at next service (due 19k miles) if more than 2mm difference, its a lease so they should last me until it goes back

Seem to last, and not too noisy, probably best described as fair/adequate rather than outstanding

It's interesting to see reports from other owners running non-big-brand tyres.  My Kleber (Michelin) Quadraxer all-seasons are at 5mm all over at around 24K miles - about half-and-half on my previous 140Tdi 4x4 DSG and the current 1.2Tsi FWD DSG.  I expect them to go through next winter (barring accidents, of course!); as things stand, they'd be replaced with the later Quadraxer 2's sometime through 2019.

Anyone else daring to be different?

Isn’t Ernieb offer the best you will ever  want/get?

That seems a low mileage to wear out? When my Greenline went back at 45k and 3 years old to the lease company, the front tyres probably had 5k left on them and the rears would probably have perished before wearing out.

Similar power but more weight on front so should wear slightly faster than a petrol car?

I'd aim to stick with what you have got i.e. Pirelli Cinturatos as, to my mind, you should always have all four tyres the same.

Bring your current rear tyres to the front and fit new ones to the rear.

Mind you the offer from @ernieb  of 4 Goodyear Efficient Grip tyres  is most generous and seriously worth considering.

As I said before £400 worth of top brand tyres for free - what's the hesitation?

One of the members of the forum picked up the tyres today, so they are obviously no longer available.

I fitted Michelin Cross Climate about 2 years ago (I think - the memory isn't what it was - and it didn't start great) and I've been very happy with them. Still got plenty of tread but wouldn't hesitate to have them again.

Avon zv7 do the job on my yeti quiet and grippy £90 a corner

I don't have anything to compare with on the Yeti but I'm more than happy with the Goodyear Efficient Grip that come on mine from factory. Excellent in the wet. I shouldn't need to replace them before the lease Yeti goes back next September, due to wear at least. I had Hankook on my BMW 330ci and I wouldn't look past them again when buying mid-range. No complaints on a RWD car with twice the power of the Yeti. Also a fan of Uniroyal Rainsports in the mid-range.

Fair comment about the power on a 1.2 yeti but the 2.0 170 bhp  Yeti produces more torque than the 330 ci Which might influence tyre choice

Why did you not do a front to back swap to even out the wear, at about 15-18k miles

Has to be requested as not a standard service item

Would have deferred this question (and expense) until Autumn 2019, at which point getting all season tyres on all 4 wheels could have been done

I've got Michelin Primacy 3 on mine from new and pleased with grip and road noise. Was less happy at its first MOT a couple of weeks ago (25k. on clock) as I got an advisory for cracking between the side wall and tread. Plenty of tread on the rears still and what I usually do is replace the fronts twice for one set of rears. Guess I won't do that this time and if I keep the car for much longer will have to change all four.

On the TT have ContiSportContact3 which are a year older and no signs of cracking. Both cars are kept outside.

Never got around to changing tyres as mileage reduced over last few months and tread wear was holding up.  Have the first MOT at start of March, tread is still legal, there is signs on the rims that the rubber is starting to perish, however noticed a small bulge on the front passenger tyre yesterday so clearly, now have to act.

My problem is compounded by unsure if I'm going to keep the car PCP ends in September, so do I go budget option, swap backs to front (a little late I know) with new on the rear, buy a full set of tyres for the car and keep it a little longer.  Not in a hurry to change as currently no good deals, apart from Seat Ateca, bought last 2 Yeti's on zero %. I do like the look of the new Skoda Kamiq, so more than happy to stick with my Yeti for another 12-18 months.

Current tyres are Pirelli Cinuratos, but do I go with Goodyear efficient grip or Michelin Cross climates plus.

Also who is the cheapest for tyres.

Another reason for getting Bridgestone they are cheaper. 195 45 16 £95, CC 195 55 16 £121,  no 205s .

So I'm sure that Bridgestone wear will not be more than £26 or nearly 25% more than CC. I got mine for £80 so saved £41 that's £164

My car is Fabia

Checking Blackcircles for comparison.

Probably all that buy Michelin CC are also have an Apple iPhone and not an Android.

My Yeti came with Dunlop SP Sport 01 made in Germany. Best OE tires I have had to date, for dry grip, wet grip, low noise. Most miles on motorway commute. Just replaced 4 at about 78,000km. Have otherwise used Falken for decades after a friend recommended them and I've had no good reason to change. Was planning to replace the Dunlops with Falken ZE914 eco. Tyre guy suggested Dunlop SP Sport 050 plus. A bit more reading discovers the SP Sport 050 plus was designed as Dunlop's premium tyre for European import cars. Made in Japan, wheres Falkens I've had have come from Thailand. Similar price to the Falkens and very similar design and technology. Not surprising since Ohtsu making Falken was subsumed back into Sumitomo Rubber and Dunlop outside USA is also owned by Sumitomo. Tyre placard says the SP Sport 050 plus should wear a bit faster than the SP Sport 01. Rubber:void ratio suggests wet grip should be better. Tread design is rather similar to Contis, without the Conti pricetag.

I figure most of tyre performance can be inferred by looking at the tread design. Read a magazine article about it years ago, which seems on the money. Silica is important for wet grip and probably most tyres these days have silica compounds. Softness as measured by treadwear rating on tire placard indicates grip and cost. Block size indicates dry performance (with slick as ultimate) - large circumferential block dimensions are good for braking, large transverse block dimensions are good for cornering. Rubber:void ratio indicates water clearance (inverse). Transverse groove elements make noise as the edge hits the road. Fussy complicated shapes compromise performance.

Surely that tyre has to be changed before the mot, and best to have the same tread on both wheels at the front
