Liquid around injectors

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a skoda fabia monte carlo 1.6 TDi 2011.

My issue occurred in march 2018 where the red oil can light came up on my dash board and started beeping. I took it to a friend of mine who opened up the bonnet and took off the engine cover. When he did that you could see that quite a lot of oil had been spilt ontop of the engine. This could have only happened when i had my last service.

My friend cleaned the spilt area which was around the injectotrs and doen the side of the engine nearest to where the oil cap side as the oil had spilt is all the way down.

My friend also had it on the ramp and took off the underneath cover from the bottom of the car. There was oil all spilt there as well. The dip stick level was over filled and was done by a previous garage and this is why my friend then removed some of the oil to bring it back to the two small dots on the dip stick.

After that and after my friend had cleaned around the injectotrs, side, and bottom of the engine i took it for a drive and all ways fine whilst driving it at 70mph on the m6 motorway and on the a46 motorway.

On the 3rd week the red oil can light on the dash board came on again and then  went off and has not been on since. Then i kept a close eye on the oil by checking the dip stick level in the morning whilst the car is on a flat surface and all has been fine. I then removed the engine cover and found that there is either fuel or diesel around the injectotr closest to the oil cap. I immediately took it to my friend and he cleaned it and said check it the next day. The next day it had come back again around the injector nearest to the oil cap.

The car performs like it should and i havent noticed and changes in driving. There is no miss fire or juddering. Also, that black liquid doesnt smell like diesel. I can however, smell a small amount of smell thats like grease when i sit in the car and put the normall fan on however when i put the air con on i cant smell anything.

Could someone please try and help identify what could be the issue.

Thank you in advanced.

Possibly a leaking injector or if you suspect oil, have a close look around the oil filler cap, either at its seal or where the filler neck joins the engine, etc.

I had the those two injector washers and seals newrest to the oil cap replaced today and i purchased the parts are from skoda listers. However as soon as i took it down the road again the red oil light came on flashing in the dahsboard rev clock and now the dpf yellow exhaust light has come on.

I dont want to give the car a run on the motorway to clear the dpf out when the red oil light is on.

Also, there is oil again pretty much as soon as i took ot out of the garage around the same injector as wherr it was last time in the picture. The oil cap neck area did not look split or cracked. Neither is it leaking from the rocker cover gasket.

The car performs like there is NO problem however there is oill around the injector and now i have the red oil can light and the dpf light on.

Also, i checked the dipstick afterwards and clear smoke was coming out of the dip stick hole however there is no smoke coming out like that from the exhaust and the car performs near perfect. Also, the engine is not rattling or making any loud sounds. It starts first time and has no miss fire.

Although unlikely, have you looked UNDER the oil filter for an extra rubber seal that sometimes gets left in there? Take off the filter, suck up as much oil as you can from the location and look for a loose small rubber o-ring. You will see one on the end of the actual filter but there should not be a loose one inside the filter housing although they have been known to fall off into there. When you re-fit the filter, tighten it up properly but not too tight.

Is there any way you can isolate the area that looks wet? Perhaps a bit of making tape, light coloured insulating tape or similar. Then run the engine  a few mins and look to see if the oil is hitting the outside of the tape or the inside? This might help detect where the leakage is from. Try this in varying areas around the vicinity but be careful not to burn the tape too much with the heat of the engine. Don't want a fire!

I went to see my friend at the garage today. He used brake cleaner and a air gun to clean the whole top of the engine where the injectors sit.

Once that was done he said to drive the car for a short period and see if i can spot where the leak was coming from.

I took the car on the motorway and drove it in 4th gear at 70mph (2500 approx revs) for about 35 miles oneway to clear the dpf and regen it and ten went fine. No performance loss, no loud engine noises, no dashboard lights until i was about to park up after being on the motorway to my destination after 35 miles the red oil can light came on  and beeped again but then flashed a few times and went off. The car was off and parked ip for 4 hours and then when i left my destination to head back home i drove in 5th gear 70mph and not one light came on.

However, as soon as i got back home i immediately checked around the injector and noticed there was the liquid. I also noticed that the leak looks like it is coming from the pipe that is connected to the injector. That thread on the screw is very rust and wet compared to the other injectors. Which leads me to believe the injector fuel pipe connecting to the injector is the cause and is in fact diesel and not oil. Have  a look at the images. Also, if you look at the pics you can see what i mean (i hope).

All the injectotrs then the one nearest to the oil cap which is actually leaking shows wetness around the injector connection area and how rusty the thred area is. Is this normal or could it be that this is the issue? The amount if liquid today that occurred around that injector seal was a small amount but it came after the garahe had cleaned it spotless and when i drove it 3 miles from the garage back home and no light came on the dash until i got to my destination once i was off the motorway the red oil light flashed and went off after a few flashes and beeps.

Lastly, i have attached an image of the two injectors nearest the oil cap that were removed to fot the new seals and injector washers.

Thanks in advanced.

Also i have had this car on the computer a number of times and no fault codes show at all.

Can ou swap the "Oily" injector for another other one from the car? see if it then moved the issue as well or if the issue stays on the cylinder next to the oil cap. If the leak moves, it will almost certainly be the injector and the corrosion around its joint. It could be the pipe you removed or the next joint, where it goes in to the injector body.

If the problem persists on the same area, it will be leaking near but not on the jint so shielding again, might help you find where from. Make sure there are no splits/cracks in the metal pipe that feeds the injector.

Are you able to take a sample of the liquid? Put it on some paper and put a match or better still, a barbecue type, gas lighter, to it? oil might be a lot harder to ignite then diesel but diesel won't flare up (Or evaporate) like petrol.

Do this well away from the car.

I have not had a chance to ask of the injectors can be swapped around to check if it leaks again. However the two injectors seals have been replaced with original skoda ones a few days back and the leak came back around the same area. I have noticed it only comes when the car is under load and thats when the oil pressure light comes on as well.

Also, I went to see skoda. The workshop team said there is an upgrade for the skoda fabia and its a block that sits in the oil filler neck to prevent leaks. I said to them that it should be classed as a recall then but they were having none of it. I said well what if I pay to get that done and it comes back again do you cover the fault they said no. So thats why im thinking to just change the whole rocker cover and gaskets and oil pressure switch. Hopefully with the new rocker cover that I get from skoda listers has that block already mounted in. I quickly took a picture of whwt the skoda team were showing me im relation to that block that needs to sit in the oil filler neck to prevent leaking on the outside of the neck. I have attached it to here.

Have a lool at this picture I think and actually do hope and pray that this is where I think the leak could come from. It is so much headache when you have a leak and you cannot determine where it is from.IMG_20180629_145322__01.thumb.jpg.df282eb3e013cd7f444f03ea8c05f5cf.jpg

Yes, I got the valve cover replaced. Apparently there is a common fault with the valve cover splitting by the oil neck and allowing oil to come through and sit around the injectors.

Skoda have not put this as a recall which I was bot happy about. I got the valve cover directly from skoda for 180 pounds and went to a registered garage to get it replaced.

A very experienced car mechanic instructed me to first change the injector seals, which I did. Then the oil around the injectors came back and then I was advised to change the entire top valve cover.

I did explain all this to skoda and they also said that they were aware of it and they have improved on the build quality of the valve cover which I thought was ridiculous because they could have at least done it under a recall since they were aware and have made an improved valve cover.

Everything came with the valve cover all the seals and new injector seals as well.

Hello.

sorry for digging the topic from the grave...

i have the exact same problem (but on a 1.6 tdi Yeti).

the oil comes from the oil filler neck.

Ive changed the valve cover gasket, and the injector gasket (including washers), but the problem remains, and today ive checked where the oil comes from... the filler neck.

Since the gaskets costed almost 100€... dont want to spend another 240€ on a new valve cover... at least... right now...

maybe some silicone around the filler neck would fix temporarily the leak?

And ive noticed something, with the engine running, smoke comes from that area.

 damn it....

thanks in advance

Sounds like the crank case is being pressurised and that extra pressure has just found a weak spot.

Now to find the root cause of that maybe.
