New owner Columbus help please

Featured Replies

Picked up my 2013 Mk2 Elegance, a nice upgrade from my old Mazda6. But the Columbus system has me stumped. I tried to put in a cd, it takes it, stays in for about 15 seconds and then says CD/DVD Error, Please check CD/DVD. And then ejects the disk. I've tried cds, dvds and cds with MP3 files and the same every time.

Any advice on what might be going on?

Also, is there a quick way to mute the sound? Other than switching it off?

Could be an issue with the lens or laser in the disk drive. How does it fare with music on an SD card?

As for mute, I have no idea. It automatically mutes when a call comes through on Bluetooth which is about the only situation I can think of where muting is useful.

Did you get it from a dealer. If so take the error problem back to them. If not, is the manual including the Columbus manual in the glove box. If it is it will give you the answers to the volume muting and much, much more.

If you don't have Bluetooth then pressing the phone button will mute the sound. However, I think the Elegance came with Bluetooth so may not be relevant. After that, steering wheel controls turn the volume down fairly sharpish.

As regards the CD/DVD error, most likely a faulty drive in the unit, although it might be an issue with the radio board or the ribbon cable connecting it to the drive.

Try a good CD/DVD lens cleaner first (Hama or similar)

If you don't have the phone module, on the old style steering wheel, you can press the phone button on the right side to the airbag (same as pressing the phone button on the Columbus in that case). On the newer type of steering wheel, you press in the left jog dial (which you'd use to scroll and turn the volume up or down)

Thanks guys, I appreciate all the advice.

I agree with vborovic.  I had a similar problem which a conventional CD player cleaner solved easily.

By the way, I love the fact that the opening photo displays KISS FM as the current station ... I hope its not a message from the unit "Kiss your FM goodbye" ...

Luckily I still have one old style MFSW laying around, and it seems you can press the volume jog button inside (already forgot about that), which should also mute the sound (like on the new style steering wheels as well)
