Very noisy manual gear change

Featured Replies

Hello all, after searching the fórum based on offski's recommendation i havent found anything that sounds like my problem in other threads, so i'd be very grateful for any advice here if anyone has come across this problem.

Basically i picked up a 2016 1.0 mpi 5 speed manual estate two weeks ago and just in the last few days noticed that the gear change from 1st to 2nd and sometimes 2nd to 3rd can be extremely noisy. After initially describing it as a clunk, i would say the best way i can think of to describe it is like the sound a typewriter key makes when it hits the page, except much louder obviously. It is a very metallic "slap" rather than a clunk. It happens when the clutch pedal is about halfway up, on the release. The gear change itself feels very smooth but its just that the noise is quite worrying. If i release the clutch extremely slowly i dont hear the noise, but when i say extremely slowly i mean ridiculously slowly, in a way that isnt really practical in many situations.

Does anyone have any idea what this mighy be please? Is this normal on these models? Ive never experienced anything like this on any other cars ive driven, and just based on the volume and harshness of the noise i am worried that something might be getting damaged every time i shift. I am going to take it back to the dealer tomorrow to see what they say, but because you can show that the noise doesnt occur when you release the clutch very slowly i am expecting them to say i am just releasing it too quickly. Next step would be to take it to the official Skoda dealer, but i'd appreciate any info or advice anyone can offer me on here só i go as prepared as possible!

Edit: might be worth mentioning that there is no grinding, its easy to get the gears in and it doesnt seem to matter whether the engine is hot or cold. I only started noticing the noise when i started driving with the windows open. Should have tried that on test drove!

Never noticed it in my MPI but will have a listen to hear if it’s normal and report back.

Thanks Davy, i'd appreciate any feedback from your mpi.

Cheers

Gondo, from this description I'd say your noise is not normal. It's probably the clutch pedeal return spring misplaced or in need of some lube (grease) where it contacts the pedal. I could be wrong but worth checking that. Irrespective of what is causing it, it should be easy to find and fix this.

HI

This sounds almost identical to the sound that I described in my post "Clutch Pedal Noise". I get it in my 18 SEL and my brothers 17SE does it as well. I've noticed mine from the inside of the car, never listened for it with the windows open will have to try that.

Estateman and humphret, thanks a lot for the input. Humphret i'd be interested to hear what you find. Looks like i won't have time to take it to the dealer before wednesday but i'll report back what they say when i finally get there!

It will be interesting to see what the dealer says. If it's a fault I'll have them look at mine.

I notice the typewriter type of noise changing 1 to 2 but mine seems quiet.

Be interesting to see what Skoda say.

This post seems quite old but I have exactly same problems as described here with my new superb 1.5 TSI manual transmission. Noticed the same noise when shifting if the shifting is done in a more rapid manner. To me it looks like some manufacturing defects. Does anyone has some experience with dealers acknowledging the problem as being a manufacturing issue?!

I found a way to easily reproduce the issue if gearbox engaged in 1st and depressing the clutch pedal in a somewhat faster manner after releasing it half way (until clutch starts to bite). By doing this, I kind of mimicking a more rapid gear shifting when driving the car. You can here the kind of noise I'm talking about from this video:
