Noisy Folding Mirrors

Featured Replies

The power folding mirrors on my 2018 SEL have made a grinding noise when folding for a while now, despite me giving as many of the moving parts a spray with silicon oil, which quietened them down for a while.

After the hot summer the noise returned with a vengeance, to the point where you could see the drivers side "bouncing" as it opened, so i took it to the dealer a couple of weeks ago where it was inspected by the Master Tech who said he'd never seen it before but would order a pair of mirrors incase they were needed.

The car went in this morning for warranty repair and was told they needed it all day. I was contacted a couple of hours later to say it was ready for collection. Apparently Skoda said that the mechanism needs "special lubricant" applied (mind boggles) and that will solve the problem. Needless to say it hasn't and I've been told to give it a few weeks to see if it will settle down (not holding my breath). I suspect that Skoda declined the replacement mirror assembly under warranty. Has anybody else had similar problems and if so what was the outcome.

I've got one of my S3 mirrors that is starting to be noisy too but not that bad for me to have an interim service visit.

Obviously the 'special lubricant' wasn't snake oil!

Since day one they make some noise (I am second owner). Never tried silicone oil, but when I wash it with pressure it makes bit less noise.

My18 plate has had noisy mirrors too. Make a bit of a grinding noise when moving. Was going to get the dealer to look at them next month when it goes in for its first service

@john999boy - it's not just the noise that's the problem, it's the vibration through the door as the mirror grinds it's way out. The drivers door is by far worse than the passenger door. The "special lubricant" mustn't be snake oil as the amount that has been splashed over the doors and wings it would have resulted it the extinction of all known types of snake.

@Croat - mine were quiet when I got the car last November, but it started when we had a really cold winter which was then followed by a really hot summer.  I've tried various sprays which work for a few days but the noise invariably comes back.

I have the same issue and also took my Scout in to the dealer for attention recently. As with the OP, instead of replacement, the mirrors were lubed. Speaking to the service desk, it’s a known issue and if it doesn’t settle down, then the next step would be replacement.

Where should you apply silicon oil to silence folding mirrors?

 I tempted to suggest

I applied spray silicon oil to the area where plastics meet, which silenced the mirrors quite well.

You mean when they slide one over other?

I Have the same issue, had since i got the car (VRS245 MY17) it went in for its first year service and i asked them to take a look and oil the mirrors, i was told they don't do this as the oil would attract dirt and grit and make it worse but they would have a look, after having it most of the day when i picked it up they said they didn't have time and i would have to come back, i'm an hours drive a way so haven't arranged anything yet although i will have to go back at some point to fix the stop start that they failed to fix this time, anyway i was just looking this week to get some silicone spray and have a go myself, good to know i'm not alone with this issue.

Both my current 245 & my previous Mk3 Elegance have made the same noise, the Elegance went back after 3-1/2 years it still made the same noise.  No better & No worse.

Don't sweat the small stuff

Firstly I'd find another dealer or speak to the Service Manager in respect of your last visit: didn't have time" is not acceptable. If your vehicle is booked in with a job of work to do, then the work is carried out unless there are extenuating circumstances such as parts required etc. Inspecting the mirrors isn't too onerous a task and "didn't have time" means "sorry we forgot".......

Secondly my mirrors on the 245 are noisy as hell; the motors are incredibly loud considering the job they do. No actually grinding noises or sounds that may indicate failure, simply loud motors. That said, of late they seem a bit "tardy" in operation and slow to respond so I'm adding them to the list of things for the dealer to investigate which includes a S/W update to resolve 'Start/Stop Unavailable" issue, jerky drivetrain and other niggles.....

I tend to sweat the small stuff on a vehicle that cost me £25 grand.......

Yes, I used silicon spray with a tube, spreader those areas and in the gap.

did it a couple of times a couple of days apart and the friction noise and creak as they close has gone.

this was a few weeks ago now, so if it comes back too soon I will be on here.

My passenger mirror is particularly noisy when folding. Hopefully Xman will give it a juicy lick for me.

Occured with mine on driver's mirror, solved now for a long time. I will explain why I believe it occured and how it was resolved.

If you watch mirror folds, you can see that folded it exposes a bit mechanical part, but when it is open, all parts go in place and fit perfectly. I suppose we washed car while mirrors folded, clearing any kind a factory lubrication present there.

How I have solved it - very efficient, cheap and quite clean with a Vaseline! :) Bought it in pharmacy for a approx. 1€.

Steps: fold the mirrors and put with a finger vaseline on the parts which seem to be tearing with each other. I think the rubbing part is outside of the mirror non moving part causes the issue, so take particular attention to it. Unfold the mirrors and fold several times, so you will see yourself how well you did the job done. I don't think the issue is anywhere deeply inside the mirror, as it become more silent then it ever was, after this treatment.

When unfolded, you can wipe out extra vaseline squeezed out, or you've put where actually not needed.

Vaseline isn't disolvable by water, so it should hold on for quite a while, it is cheap, doesn't smell, seems not to attract dirt and does the job.

I am not sure this noise on my car is actually plastic rubbing noise... sounds like some mechanical thing because it squeaks..

Same, but spraying in that gap gets it onto the gears inside and onto the plastic around there seems to have silenced and noises.

i think it’s unlubricated gears and a little friction that increases the load, which creates the noise.

I prefer to call it poor quality control.

Just stick a couple of golf balls in your ears and that should fix it. :drunk:

It’s normal to lubricate gears after 3 years with no attention...

maybe it just isn’t done during service.

You're joking....right?

Not really.

you lubricate any other gear/rack and pinion system, so why not the one between the mirror and the folding motor?

bike gears, gearbox, most gears are lubricated where two surfaces intermesh.

Am I missing something, because I don’t see lubrication of two moving parts exposed to the weather as a big deal.

Maybe the noise I had is different, but it too about 3 years to appear.

i know on some other brands, silicon spray and lubrication of door seals, mirrors etc is normal. (They do charge a lot though)
