Looking Back

Featured Replies

I had an amusing 5 minutes this morning. In a long queue for temp traffic lights with quite a wait between movement. Thus I put the DSG into P. This meant, of course, that to get back into D I had to pass R. (still with me).

Now as you may know that means the rear view camera triggers and will not close off until you reach x mph. Thus it stayed on for some time as crept towards the lights. Annoying and a bit crazy at first but then I realised the driver behind me was clearly listening to some amazing music and dancing all over the front seat. I wonder what the music was?

That was much more fun than when the proximity sensors decided I was close to the cones and proceeded to beep at me for at least 2 minutes. Technology can be useful but it can also be a right pain.

I don't have DSG and I know that u should not put car in P on traffic lights :D

Never felt the urge to put into park regardless of the wait time. , but hey each to there own,:thumbup:

Just love the judgement call guys. :D:D These are not usual lights. Temp lights with a wait of up to 5 minutes between movements with up to a 40 minute wait in total to get thru at peak times.

I aint judging anything. It was just observation. I was reading manual the other day and noticed there was section at the DSG about P mode which was supposed to be used only when car is parked. Meaning you turn it off and leave. How long you were waiting and so on doesn't matter to me because I ain't judging your actions. I observed your message and commented on it. That's what "forum" is for.

Burn the heretic!!! Form an orderly mob behind me lads...

I'm told leaving it in P at the lights bu**ers up the ambient lighting settings - no idea if it's true or not...

Rather put it in "N" and use a foot on the brake if the car is on the slope and it moves. If you are in park and someone rear ends you, gearbox is going to be hurt.

I had a Volvo as a hire car the other day and it had a manual handbrake. It was automatic. If I put it in neutral and put my foot on the foot take the stop start activated and the engine stopped. If I then put the handbrake in and took my foot off the brake the stop start cancelled and the engine restarted.

I thought it it was strange because when I learnt to drive I was always taught not to keep the footbrake on because a it can damage the brakes and b it can dazzle people at night.

What at were you lads and ladies taught to do?

I always have auto brake on so i take my foot of the pedal and leave it till i need to set off again. Rear lights stays on till i press accelerate.

Never had any of this tech when learning to drive

crickey.......how slow do u move the gear lever when going from P to D?
my RVC does not activate until i've actually stopped the gear lever in R.

and did u know that u can deactivate the RVC by pressing the parking view button on the centre console?!?!?  hence u don't have to wait for it to reach a certain speed!!

Thank you to all who responded for the advice on how to operate my vehicle.

The level of assumptions made are very interesting and the wish to correct my disgraceful incompetence has given me further fun from the episode this morning.

I apologise for that as it wasn't my intention at all. I had rather hoped for some suggestions as to what song the driver behind me was listening to.

I do love this forum really :biggrin:

Obviously…:D

Can't help with the music but the question of whether to leave 'box in D in a queue crosses my mind whenever it happens - if Stop/Start doesn't kick in, obviously. I have an S2 and always notice a very slight drop in engine revs when shifting into D and the opposite when putting it into N. It feels like a very small touch of clutch drag. So I usually pop it into N and try avoid the embarrassment of attempting to move off without going back to D !

If you have the auto handbrake on then you will see the revs rise when it engages, even if you are still in drive.

I think it's acceptable to place the DSG in P with the proviso that a rear end smash will take out the gearbox. Hence the advice to use P only when parked. Rich

I should perhaps close this topic (as the OP) with a clarification that I was effectively 'parked' in a traffic jam sat stationary for at least 5 minutes between movements. With a queue of more than 20 vehicles behind me the risk of any rear end collision damage is effectively zero. If it did, by some catastrophic circumstance, happen then damaging the gearbox would be the least of my worries I think.

And just so you can all sleep easy in your beds tonight  No I don't use P in normal driving conditions. I either leave it in D if I have stop/start enabled or N if not.
