How does the Mk3 (MY18) Octavia turn off the Immobiliser?  Is it a transponder chip in the key like my old Felicia or something different?

 

Reason I ask is one of my keys recently got run over by an HGV.....The PCB looked not too bad so I put a new case on it but the remote buttons don't work so I was think of sending it for repair...but then I tested starting the car (blade was undamaged) and it won't start without another key present.

charges £25 to look at your key and potentially repair, but I'm trying to determine if that's going to be a waste of time and money.  

 

You got 3 keys with the car so use another one & just get a replacement from Skoda, not the cheapest option but, at least you'll know it'll work.

 

Are you sending the car back at the end of your PCP ? that's the only reason I could think of needing 3 keys

In a non-Kessy car, I would assume that the immobiliser is a non-powered transponder separate to the central-locking radio unit as you suggest.

however, it is still probably part of the same circuit board inside.

 

If you take the full key (in its damaged state) does it start the car?

I guess my point was if it was only going to cost £25 to retain 3 keys it's worthwhile....the car is not on PCP.

I didn't try before putting a new fob shell on the PCB and blade. As I said previously it will not now start the car, hence I was interested if there was a separate chip that I am now missing, (or if the PCB is more damaged than is apparent.) 

I only use the 3rd key when it goes in for servicing which was this week and they asked me if they could fit a new battery in the remote (more expense for me more profit for them) but I declined their kind offer.

It's really simple to replace the battery yourself on the latest key fob. 

 

If the dealer ever replaced the battery on my Mk2 (in 7 years) however, they never charged me.

Just looked at the remains of the original remote fob and there's definitely no obvious place for a separate transponder chip. It would be nice to know for sure though.

Some manufacturers remote key fobs are mega expensive. Owners find this out when they are lost or damaged as in your case.

They are all mega expensive in my experience of trying to source spare keys for grown up children's old bangers bought with one key. £150 for a key for a £850 car is a bit mad.

 

I still have two keys for my Octavia so not really worth going to the dealer to replace the third for £££.  Just wondered if a £25 repair was worth a try, but doesn't look like it.

I would spend that £25 on a pair of genuine Skoda Vrs rear door sill protectors, best and cheapest mod on my car IMHO.

Yeah looks like it will resemble a Superb Sportline when they show it to the world probably at Frankfurt Motor Show September/October this year and on sale in UK from March 2020 for the new plate 7 years after the MK3 was launched.

Well 2020 is a bit soon for me....and once the FL is only a year or two away I probably won't buy the "pre". But best laid plans and all that.

Keeping mine until 2029 when I collect my State Pension then we decide on just one car, probably an SUV for the easy access as bones and hips creaking as much as my then 12 year old Octavia.

On the Ford Keys the transponder is a separate chip (blue dot) on the key fob maybe 0.5cmx0.25cm (visible on the mechanical only key I had for my Mondeos).

It was Embedded into the pastic moulded key part.

For VW I dont know.

As a quick test, take the old plastic housing & the key blade & try to start the car.

Its possible it is moulded Inside the plastic as its a passive chip so doesnt normally need to be changed/replaced.

Apologies for hijacking. 3 keys? I got mine s/h and I only got 2 keys. Should I be going back to the dealer complaining? Is the 3rd key something special?

This.  I had a blade break on me last year and thought the immobiliser was going to be in the hinge but its in the hollow bit next to it separate from the main board.  Just needs a continuity through the blade to complete the circuit.  do you have the complete collection of parts or can you go back to where it was run over?  If not then just keep the bits as spares.  I was surprised how easily I snapped the blade.  I now make sure to detach from my bunch of keys and also remove from ignition when climbing in out as that is how it happened.

With memory electric seats (std on VRS 245 MY18) you get three keys.

Not quite sure which hollow bit you mean, but I didn't get all of the old key plastics back. The bit which runs the length of the fob to hold the two sides together was gone.

Depending on which key you use when you start it the Maxidot in front of you reads "Driver 1, Driver 2 or Driver 3" and can alter the electric memory seats to your chosen position.
