Kangaroo effect on first two mins of driving from cold

Featured Replies

Whenever I start to drive my Karoq in the morning during the first five minutes it acts as though it has a kangaroo effect, sort of hobbling along.   Skoda have told me that this is a fault with the software and cannot at the moment be repaired until Skoda/VW can find an answer to the problem.   Anyone else finding this a problem.  I would appreciate your comments.

It’s well documented. You’re not alone.

Hi Maud, welcome to the forum.

A long thread for you to read.

It distills to three basic options.

1 Can you live with effect and wait for fix? If you can keep driving and hope they fix it - no sure thing.

2 You want the car fixed but feel it is unsafe to drive, your dealer might give you a vehicle until fix is released?

3 The car is upto 6 months purchased you can get a full refund and hand it back. This option is if you don't want to live with the first two.

I know which option I would take if I felt the car was dangerous.

If this is a new car, read the posts in the link provided above. If it also has other traits that are mentioned in the posts i.e. lack of acceleration, still juddering when engine has reached operating temp etc. then from my own experience of not being firm enough, I would take it back to the dealer and either demand a refund or a replacement car. You may be left, like a lot of us who are and have been waiting for a supposed fix due sometime never.

Just surprised (perhaps not) that the dealer sold the car KNOWING there was a FAULT with it.

Companies sell products every day knowing there are faults with them. Let’s not stand with shocked expressions that Skoda did either.

Not many companies knowingly sell products which have the potential to kill or seriously harm someone though.

VW Group the biggest car Manufacturers in the world are selling them.

Skoda, VW, SEAT, Audi UK are importing them, so VW Group UK.

The new VW UK Managing Director obviously knows where the buck will stop.

Anyway, back to the cars, for F's and the OP's sake.

@MJ1's post summarises things well.  Maud, are you feeling like you have the info you need?

Hi @Maud, is it a manual gearbox?

Hello Kodiaqman.   NO   it is an Automatic.

Hi @Maud, most of The documented cases , though not all clearly, have been manuals. It is thought the DSG gearbox can mask the issue to some extent generally.

May we ask if the car is new?

Hello Kodiaqman.    Yes,  only eight months old and only done 800  miles.   Maud.

So not new then,

@Maud. Mine is the 1.5 DSG from Oct 2018. 700 miles. From cold, if I set off just by releasing the brake without the gas pedal or just a tiny press of the pedal then it judders. But if I was to step on the gas pedal a bit more then it's fine. Seems like a sign that it just needs more fuel to keep the engine from stalling when cold. To me anyway.

I am starting to get the feeling from the replies I have received that all the Karoqs do this when cold.    Is this true?

i picked up my 1.5se dsg last week and drives like a dream no complaints at all. coldest i have driven it is only at 4c but i dont expect any problems and the car pulls in every gear no lag at all.

@Davey9 that is excellent news. Please keep us updated over the next few weeks and in particular if the weather gets colder.

Maybe it is only a problem with automatics.

No - it is less of a problem with the DSG autos.
