Differences in VRS 245/230/220 engines, and impact of remaps

Featured Replies

Sorry if a dumb question, but what's the differences between the various VRS petrol engines? (245/230/220). Are they fundamentally the same, but the 230 and 245 are at a higher level of tune to the 220 (effectively a factory remap), or are there genuine differences between the engines? (eg. bigger turbo).

Off the back of that question, what does that mean for a remap? If they were effectively the same engine (in different states of factory tune), does that mean a remap would get you to the same place regardless of whether you started with a 245, a 230, or a 220?

Thanks.

Good question!  I await the embedded Briskoda sages!

Hmm I have no knowledge on this, but I doubt there is any difference in turbo. I would want more out of a bigger turbo than 25PS, Maybe upgraded turbo internals (still pretty expensive) and just a state of tune?

The VRS 2.0 is already going to have different internals and oil galleries to a stock 190ps 2.0, so I doubt there is an extra difference between the 220 and 245.

I take it the 245 came out a few years later right? That's always a result of them seeing after market modders make reliable power, because the 245 production numbers are so much lower and the Octavia has sold well as a whole they can afford to take the risk on warranty claims.

Simple answer is hardly any difference between a 220 and a 245, same turbo for instance. To increase power you need more cool air (denser) plus more fuel (higher octane helps) and the ability to get rid of those exhaust gases (so larger bore pipe helps here). To demonstrate when Ant's bagged 220 was at stage 2 then his car produced 331bhp. My 245 might be 3 years newer but at the same stage 2 my car only produces 336bhp (5bhp difference). However the estate is about 25kg heavier than the hatch and the DSG box is 21kg heavier than the manual. Therefore the lightest variant is the manual hatch which is 46kg lighter than a DSG estate for example. My power-to-weight ratio is now 245bhp per tonne (1,370kg kerb weight).:o

My 220 was at 240bhp out of the box, and a stage 1 remap has taken it to around the 300bhp mark.  I've dallied with a couple of later vRS's on the open road, and the difference in pick up is noticeable.

Don't know why, but i thought as well as the diff, that the 245 had a later turbo to my IS20?

Could it be a different exhaust manifold and intercooler.  That would be enough with a tweak to the map to give 25 extra horses and minimal additional strain on the turbo etc.

300bhp just from a Stage 1. That's pretty impressive. Who did the map? Has it been reliable?

220 - 245 snip from below link.

Actually it’s more technically involved than that. The developments may look iterative on paper, but they set the scene for further power and efficiency advancements in coming models.

With that in mind it’s a bigger job than you’d imagine, with the complete removal of the indirect (or port) fuel-injection system, engineers instead managing the same job with redesigned direct-injection nozzles and a new fuel pump to cope with the extra loads required to hit emissions and fuel economy targets.

New pistons have also been introduced and a turbocharger with different flow characteristics complete the under-bonnet engineering revisions.

I know the APR map for the 245 is completely different to the 220.  I was speaking to the Awesome GTI about getting mine done but the power results are the same.

You can watch APR do the 245.  Its in German but you can see the results and test runs.

It's a Revo map, done by Jim at JKM in Portsmouth   Local Skoda techs commented that mine pulls as hard, if not a bit harder, that another 300bhp vRS they look after.

I should add the caveat that mine's not confirmed.  I had to duck out of last years Rolling Road day at JKM due to a coolant problem.

Yes, very reliable.  No problems at all with the map.  It does surge a bit low down, but you soon get used to it and adjust your driving style.  Mid range pick up for overtaking is very good.  Driving spiritedly uses quite a lot more go-go juice :notme:

Mine was 248bhp as standard on AmD rollers 12/03/2018.

31? 220ps = 217bhp, 245ps = 242bhp. 242 - 217 = 25.

What have I missed?

Difference between 217bhp and confirmed 248bhp for a standard 245 (no mods then).

Where has 248 been confirmed, by the manufacturer? Or is it the same "confirmed" as the 220 dyno'ed at 240 as above?

Apples Vs apples = 25 difference.  Apples Vs bananas = 31 difference. Bananas Vs bananas = 8 difference based on that logic ;)

Interesting that they have dropped the Direct Port Injection. I wonder if that will cause any issues with carbon on the inlet valves over time - I'd be also interest to know if the dual fuel injection would give any tuning gains if going BT with a FL 230?

In the USA, 2.0 TSI was always without port injector system. Could be that it is already proven in the fields without carbon residual issues on valves, who knows?

Carbon flush every 30,000 miles (50,000km) good investment at about £60 to prevent the build up and subsequent issues worthwhile.

I got 290whp from a remap alone, been run on 99 for a year though. Had it on about a year and no issues, have to use 99 or itll run brought according to the mapper though.
