Columbus 2019/2020 Map Update

Featured Replies

The question around the best ways to download the updates still alludes me. I managed it last time, but it wasn't particularly easy if I remember correctly.

As my car is parked close to the house I connected the car to our wireless home router and used Skoda Connect via the infotainment system.

The unknown for me, was whether the car would continue the rather lengthy download with the ignition off and/or vehicle locked. The idea of leaving the car unlocked, with the ignition on (so DRL's lighting up the street) didn't sit well with me. Not sure how I did it but it worked in the end.

Someone mentioned the use of a USB stick? I'll need to try and find one that holds 25Gb!

There's a video on the Update Portal - http://updateportal.skoda-auto.com/en-GB - that suggests a 32 Gb SD card is the easiest means of updating.

The update took me some 4 hours to complete.

The instructions from the Upload Portal detail - and as further amended by me:

Steps

1. What you need
SD card with available memory at least 32 GB.  We recommend using a card of type SDHC (Class 10).
A computer with a compression program that supports .zip
Downloaded data may take more than 2
5 GB.  Make sure that you have enough space on the hard disk of your computer.

2. Downloading new data:
Due to downloading large amounts of data and depending on the speed of your Internet connection can the whole downloading process take some time (even 8 hours or more).
For the operating system Windows you will be provided with a download manager that will guide you through the whole process of downloading and unpacking the data. All downloaded files are in ZIP format.

3. From the Downloads folder on your computer, open the downloaded file HIGH12_P177_EU_201920.zip

4. Copy the 2 File Folders Mib1 and Mib2, and the Text Document metainfo2 to your SD card.

5. Import of the data into the infotainment system:
Import of the data into the infotainment system:
Insert the card into the SD slot of one of your infotainment system
On the navigation, press "Menu"> "Settings"> "System Information"> "Update software"
The data will now be copied to the hard disk navigation system.

warning    During copying of the maps to the hard disk Columbus navigation has to be turned on. During copying the navigation is not available. Due to the large volume of data, the whole process can take up to 4 hours. It also depends on the type of SD card. To complete the update, make sure that the battery is sufficiently charged (if the vehicle is parked, turn off all devices drawing electricity, for example: lights, air conditioning, seats heating, etc.). If necessary, connect the charger to the battery. If the engine shuts down, copying is aborted. When the engine is re-started, copying of the data bound to the point where it was interrupted.

I use the Skoda update portal and it downloads then asks where to unzip to, put 32gb sd card in slot and it unzips to there no probs.

The trick I’ve used when installing to unit in the car is to use the passengers door, as the first time I set it installing when I opened the drivers door everything shut down, by leaving by the passengers door the unit stays on without the ignition on for approx 30 mins I believe. I just keep checking and power unit back on if it’s shut down before installation is complete and it continues from where it stopped.

First, I download zip file from Skoda Update portal, takes some minutes (200 mbps broadband).

Next, I extract them to hard disk (this took long, about an hour).

Next, copy to USB.

Why not extract directly to USB? Takes about an hour longer.

Finally, USB connected to car and update can start. Takes about 30 minutes to complete.

I just update the bits of the maps I use through the update option in the Infotainment... really don't care if my map of Estonia is out of date (no offence to linni or anyone else living there!).

I travel a lot all over Europe. Even to UK sometimes. By car.

But updating just parts of map is really a time saver.

I downloaded the update to an SD card this morning and set the software to update. After going through the whole process with the progress bar going to 100% it came up with an error message which stated '"Update Failed'". The two buttons on the touch screen were Restart and OK.  Has anyone else come across this error, and is it best to try again from the SD card or do the complete download again? Any comments would be appreciated.

Mine did that the first time I tried to update whilst driving, just pressed the restart and after a while of black screen everything as normal and on checking map version was showing updated version and everything was fine. Didn’t have any problem this time and I did it when out driving.

Thanks for that. I'll try again later.

Just to get this straight, can this download be transferred to a USB from my computer and then transferred to the car via the USB port beside the gear lever ?

I know someone has already mentioned USB, so I'm just checking they didn't mean SD card.

Also, will a dealer not do this update when the car goes in for service ?

On the Skoda update site it has the following:

Leave update to your service partner

In case of problems or needs updating, please contact the nearest service partner ŠKODA. (Note: Update on the service partner is charged according to his hourly rate.)

I would have thought that if the dealer charges for the update it would be prohibitively expensive.

I've just phoned my dealer about another matter, so I asked if updates were done whilst in for service. No he said, you can do it yourself. If we do it, you'll be charged.

He also reckons it has to be done with an SD card, not a USB stick, but the one thing I neglected to ask after being told this, was, does it matter which SD card slot do you use in the car ??

Ignore this, the Skoda portal answers my questions - should have looked at that first 🤔

My car was in for service late last week, they didn't update the maps.

This should be waiting for me when I get home...

He doesn’t know what he’s talking about. It can be done with a USB stick, and it’s a lot quicker too. Really have no idea why anyone would choose to use an SD card (let alone buy one especially to do it! 😜).

Edit: Just make sure it is formatted FAT32 and not exFAT or anything even more stupid.

I did wonder when the guy told me, but in fairness, the Skoda portal does state that an SD card should be used.

Right. I wonder how my maps got updated using USB.

Sales personell not knowing their job, it`s called.

Just quoting what they read in the instruction manual I assume.

Whilst it would be great if all of our service departments knew the precise answers to all of our questions, it not realistic to expect it unfortunately. This is my third Skoda from the same dealer, and although they don't get everything right, they always seem to try their best.

Nice to have another vote for the USB though 😁

USB is so last year

Because an SD card free's up the single USB port in the car, which is used every journey for Apple CarPlay.

Given the time taken to upload the maps (from 30 mins to 4 hours), and the short journey times, it's simply easier to stick the SD card in and forget about it.

You're only uploading a few Gb, compared to the rest of us at close to 30Gb.

Just completed the installation of the 2019/2020 map software, and once again I can assure everyone that you do not need to have the car or infotainment system powered up for the upload, as I wrote in Dec 2018. I watched the first 10% or so go in, then switched the engine off, locked up, and left it to do it's own thing. At a guess, it would take about 5 hours, as I started it at about 18:00 yesterday, then went to have a look at about 22:00 when it was about 80% complete. Restarting the engine, allowing the Columbus to boot up, shutting the engine down again and locking the car up does no harm whatsoever to the upload process.

Hey Presto, this morning, all the 2019/2020 maps are there, together with the new info version number V03959803TF0177 ECE 2019/2020. The information given on the Skoda update portal is so wrong insomuch that they state that the Columbus must be switched on, and switching the engine off aborts the process - (it does not).

For info, I am using a SanDisk Ultra 32GB 80MB/s card, the same as Silver 1011 has just bought.

I see that you drive a Karoq, does the above statement apply to the Kodiaq as well or could they be different ?

Yeah, last time I updated I started the update before leaving home to drive somewhere, and when I got back home it was done.

As above I updated mine whilst out driving and it updated in more like 1 hr not 5 as per westie’s karoq.
