Octavia RS 230 dynapack tested with and without Racechip (Shock Stock Power)

Featured Replies

Hey all

It's been awhile, but I thought I would provide the following for anyone who is thinking of getting a Racechip GTS Black for their car. Basically I posted about it before and current Racechip GTS Blank states 80+ HP and 95+NM extra for the RS 230 Octavia. They offer a 30 day money back so I thought I would try it and see, if it didn't work out it would be returned.

So I had the car tested on a Dynapack dyno, the one where the hubs are attached to the machine rather than a rolling road. We first did some baseline tests with the stock ECU from Skoda and to my pleasant surprise, the car actually produces 251.7 BHP, lets call it 252 BHP for ease. Now full disclosure I have a catback exhaust, but if it adds any power I would say maybe 5 BHP at most.

Now for the Racechip, I put the chip in 'Race' in the recommended setting which is setting 6 of 7 levels but unfortunately it only produced 286.4 BHP which is an increase of only 34.7 BHP, a far cry from the 80 they advertise. The chip does work, more torque was produced, 490 verses 422 but there was some turbo surging that the testers were a bit worried about when we upped the max level to 7.

So, all in all, it does work, but results will not be worth the €500+ price tag, so I have returned it.

The takeaway here though is the stock RS 230 has considerably more power than advertised, would be interested to see if the RS 245 is the same or has the new emissions kept it strictly to 245.

Mine was exactly the same with just the APR intake - 263 BHP (on a rolling road, so probs conservative est. would be like 255). But they're known to run hot or a lot higher with decent fuels and good air pressures.

Yeah that's what I was lead to believe, I was expecting it to be honest. I wish we could get Super Plus Unleaded in Ireland as I bet the power would be even more

With everything standard on my 2017 Vrs245 it produced 249bhp on 99 octane Shell V-Power with 400nm of torque. It never had the later GPF in the exhaust however. Same fuel and custom stage 1 map and these figures went up to 302bhp and 467nm with exhaust and air intake factory standard.

I'd say there is quite a variation in the cars with some lower and some higher or maybe all higher but at different levels.

I've seen a fair few posts echoing this - that the 230's seem to be producing somewhere in the region of 250 directly from the factory. No idea why they would do that - obviously happy customers, but still - seems odd it happened.

Yeah, I wish we could get ethanol in reliable quantities in the UK and then add a flex-fuel sensor (all the GFB stuff); everyone wins ;)

You get 5% with every fill at the pump.;)

It would be interesting to see back to back tests of stock 184, 220, 230 and 245 cars on the same dyno.

I'm always wary of high power 'stock' cars and whether they're really overpowered or the dyno is in a more 'customer happy' configuration.

There's very little for manufacturers to gain by underselling cars to the tune of 20bhp in an increasingly 'purchase by numbers' market. When Ford were selling the Focus ST as a 255PS car, why would Skoda pretend to only have 230/245 if they're comfortably producing more? All it would do is lose sales.

IIRC you ran at JKM Portsmouth so, no happy customer rollers there, heartbreak rollers they're called

My VRS245 MY18 ran 252.9 call it 253bhp with 345Nm as stock & 290.8 call it 291bhp with 447Nm with a DTUK tuningbox when new. So not much top-end improvement but, 102Nm has made it a lot more drivable. Since fitted an R600 intake & had software revisions to the tuningbox so, this year's JKM rollers morning should be interesting

BUT IT'S NOT ENOUGH, SHY! 😪😈🔥🏁

  • 2 weeks later...

My 220 came in at 242.9bhp at JKM when standard (Dyno Dynamics rollers) at my tuners (Performance Torque) with the same make of rollers it came in at 250bhp with custom cat back exhaust and an Armaspeed hyperflow carbon fibre induction kit. After remap it's now 343.4bhp with 485nm.

No more tuningbox then, be interesting to to see what it rolls at JKM this time.

Who's remap did you go with ?, not that those numbers look Stage 1 though

I went to Performance Torque in Wombourne. It's a custom map specifically designed for my car.

The internet has many stories of turbo petrol and diesel engines producing more than published figures, you almost have to be unlucky to only get spec.

NA engines were considered good if they matched specification and many did not.

Indeed my 1994 BMW 325i should have produced 192bhp according to the Germans. However my tuner who changed the air filter and exhaust to help it breathe better found the NA engine only produced 183bhp at 20,000 miles and after the remap just 199bhp with 195lb/ft from the 2.5 litre six cylinder engine which was 5 bhp less than the Sierra Cosworth from 1986 (2.0 litre turbo).;)
