Android auto not working

Featured Replies

I've got an early 17 Kodiaq with the Columbus nav/head unit. A few months ago I started to use android auto with it but it doesn't work properly. The screen does everything it should, it plays music, the nav works, but it will not respond to voice command at all using android auto. Either using the wake phrase or pressing the on-screen button brings up the correct dialog response but then it doesn't respond to any command, it just stays in listening mode with no on screen animation to indicate that it has heard anything.

The dealer and the Skoda UK have tried it and proved that it fails with any phone that thrown at it including a Skoda factory reference phone. I've used my phone in a different Skoda vehicle at the dealership and it works. I've also used my phone (and a bunch of others) in other manufacturers vehicles and they work fine.

Skoda UK have, despite evidence to the contrary, decided that my Google Pixel 2 XL (on the approved phone list) is at fault and not the car!

Anybody else experiencing similar issues with android auto either intermittently or permanently?

Try another USB cable?

Cable would be my first place to look too. Both in my wife’s Golf and in my Kodiaq the system seems really sensitive to which cable is used. Problems connecting, random disconnections, etc.  The Anker USB C cables we’ve got now work flawlessly.

It's not the cables. Different cables have been tried including the original phone cable, none work. Conversely they ALL work in other cars.

If you've demonstrated that your phone works faultlessly in another Skoda vehicle in the same dealership that is trying to diagnose the issue with your Kodiaq then you have a concrete case as far as I am concerned.

This and the fact your phone is on their compatibility list seals the deal.

Don't roll over and accept their opinion. Time to dig in and kick up a bit of a stink.

I've got the Galaxy S10 and having fun trying to get it to connect.

I don't see the Android Auto logo on the Columbus screen but it appears to work when I attach the USB cable but then when unplugged it stops working? I thought it would run via bluetooth or am I doing something wrong?

Only very few and very pricey cars have abilty to operate Android Auto over the bluetooth.

Umm me too. Got a 19 reg l&k and a lg g6. Continual random disconnections 😢

I'm think either android auto is buggy rubbish or my lg g6 is..   Also tried other cables.   But might try one more, Ideally I'd like a 90 deg one so the slidy panel can close with phone inside.

Apparently Bluetooth doesn't have the bandwidth to support android auto....

Is there a list anywhere of phones that work faultlessly with android auto... ?

Ah that explains it then! Cheers!

But it works over car`s inbuilt WLAN. On high end cars.

Very interesting.

Cannot find anything about retrofitting yet.

Could well be the head unit is different .. but if we are lucky its an add on module... bit of wiring and some code and hey presto...  but that's wishful thinking.

Makes me think the wifi / bluetooth module has to do with it.

From xda developers forum:

I can confirm that the Discover Media MIB2 with Navigation (I have one in my 2017 Tiguan MK2) has Wifi built in, and the headunit coding does have options for both wireless Car Play and Wireless Android Auto. However, these are both SWaP (Software As Product) functions so need activation codes from VW to enable.

For apple owners:

Meanwhile have you tried new AA interface? Way faster than the existing one.

You can activate it in the AA settings on phone.

Dear OP

Skoda dealers will never admit it is a software bug in the head unit. Maybe they don't even know there are firmware updates for each one.

Important update.

This morning drove to work using lead supplied with phone numerious disconnections, 6 or 7 😢.

After getting to work I took the sim out of my mifi and inserted it into the car. I then activated the car as a Wi-Fi hotspot and connected my phone.

After work put phone in holder, connected lead and drove home. NO disconnection, 😁😁😁😁

I will try again tomorrow and give update.....

Disconnections are well known problem, at least for me. I even let the service to change the USB unit in my car. Some cables work better, some worse. I try to leave the phone untouched when navigationg with AA.

About wireless AA - Scala and Kamiq have MIB3 units, whereas we have MIB2,5. So it seems to be headunit related.
