My engine fan triggers after any long journey but the engine is not above 90c. I think there is a dirty or faulty sensor. Has anyone had the same issue?

The temperature gauge on the instruments will show 90C for a very wide range of temperatures (VAG 'feature') so the actual engine temperature could be much higher - you need to log the ACTUAL coolant temperature with a diagnostic tool to see the real temperature.

I'd be happy the engine's fan was coming on mate.

Load dependant, outside temperature, quality of coolant and loads of other factors will determine your engine's temperature. When I've done checks on my car, I've seen it hover from 85 to 95 degrees.

If your engine wasn't getting properly up to temperature (meaning the gauge doesn't move, or only moves a fraction) a seized open thermostat would be your issue. BUT, in that case, you're ecu wouldn't have the need to throw the fan on.

One important question is as your fuel consumption gone up noticeably? When my tranny van had a thermostat problem, it ate diesel like it was going out of fashion.

Not only VAG - Fords also do this. Quite funny to see my temp gauge on my Focus go straight from lowest point to mid point in one sweep.

The cooling fan is activated by many things, not just engine coolant temperature.

The most likely cause in your case (as you have a diesel) is that the exhaust is very hot so the fan will continue to run after the engine has stopped to cool the exhaust, turbo charger, DPF etc

Nothing to worry about but unfortunately is can last for several minutes. (much to the annoyance of my neighbours when I come home)
