Unbearable Noise. Please help

Please help!

This is my first post, and for good reason 😂....I have this ridiculously high pitched screech/whistle (like a dog whistle or squeaking brakes) but it's coming from the engine/turbo somewhere. It happens normally after about 30% throttle input and keep going until about 3k revs.....it all started out a day after I had bonnet vents cut in, first just I very feint chirping, barely noticable. But now it's this ridiculous screech like nails one  chalk board since a couple days ago and its dreadful. I would have thought maybe metal filings from the bonnet vents trapped in the alternator or between pulley bearings was plausible, but it happens only with a certain load input and I'm no expert so I'm wondering if anyone else has had this issue?

Whip off the TIP and take a look at the turbo impeller, post a photo of it if you can.

I've had some people saying it's an EGR Gasket or leaking Exhaust Manifold gasket. Does that sound right? I have a software EGR delete so dont know if that makes a difference

No, it sounds like pub car park nonsense to me, removing the TIP is incredibly easy so rather than playing guessing games just take a look to rule out turbo failure.

TIP is the Turbo to Intake Pipe right? So the one that connects to the Airbox? Sorry new to all this abbreviated stuff 😂

Affirmative.

Sorry for the hijack lads - mine is doing sommit similar but at a fairly low level- I've taken off the inlet pipe and had a look! Nothing seems to be out of place - am i looking for excessive endfloat of the impeller or metal shavings or anything untword ?

She is boosting fine just makes a noise at certain times ?

At the minute I'll dismiss no suggestion !

Again apologies for stepping in !

You’re looking for damage to the impeller blades and up/down movement. If you have these your turbo is on its way.

a slipping belt will make a screeching noise....

It's not the same as a slipping belt. I can only describe my noise as a dog whistle type noise. Although I've got to grips with the way the sound works, it happens when warmed up and only around 2000rpm on very light throttle....still haven't gotten around to checking my turbo as it keeps raining.

Thanks Lads- the impeller blades were sound- no need for the 1756 just yet 🤣

@Adyboy99 I found a boost leak on the high pressure side of the turbo - just after the joint at the turbo itself. Rule this out first anyway if it stops raining !!

Human beings can't hear dog whistles, only dogs can.

A boost leak is possible as the source of the sound but you'll still need the Manchester sunshine to desist if you're going to find it.

Low frequency dog whistles can be heard by some people ;)....although I had a mechanic come for a drive with me and he said he couldn't hear it 😂 he was nearly 60 odd years old though aha....but regardless that whistle type sound is what in hearing

That's what I want to get at, but it's dark when I get home from work now, hoping for good weather at the weekend 👍

SOLUTION

Anyone that comes across this thread, the problem for me was in fact a leak from one of the gaskets at the egr cooler. Only coming to a solution so many months later because the noise stopped for a little while and became intermittent here and there. A couple weeks ago the noise progressed to a constant high pitch hiss even at idle which allowed me to locate the noise.

For me my fix was to make my life easier in the future and just do a full egr and cooler delete....Makes it easier if I ever work at the back of the engine. Since doing the delete I've noticed improve response in acceleration, smoother acceleration, quicker acceleration and to top it off the sounds coming from the exhaust are even beefier 👌 win all round for me aha

Nice one ! B)  A problem like that will drive you scatty.. When its found the feel good factor of having "got even"

I'm guilty as well of kicking the can down the road !! I got a noise again but this time it was more pronounced ... Better still I got the notion it was inside the car...

All was good underneath the bonnet - Leak Finder is your friend here - It turned out to be a high quality stepper motor boost gauge of Eastern origin that a previous owner had fitted (quite badly I will admit).

It has a separate sensor that is probably KO. I took the whole lot out of the car but kept the pipe and blanked it.

Ohh I do miss the 7 different colours and if you turn the lights on and then the ignition it used to confuse the boost gauge into random colours and reading 2 bar it idle ... What a pile of complete and utter tat - You would get better quality in a Christmas cracker !!
