All season tyres

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I’m driving a 2011 Fabia estate with 205 45 r16 tyres on standard factory fit alloys, my question is: does anyone run all season tyres on their car of this size? It appears the choice in this size is really limited and all the premium brands do not offer all season tyres in this size. I currently have Pirelli winter tyres on with this size, and want to consider all season for the future, as I have done on other cars previously.

any help appreciated.

cheers

The only contenders I can find are Maxxis AP2 or Vredestein Quadrac. Anyone have experience of these?

There are various threads in the Tyre Section that will help, and similar ones in this section if you do a search.

I have used Maxxis AP2 in 215/40 R 17 and got a bulging tyre wall and cracking after a few thousand miles.

Great winter tyre, bulge was driver error,  cracking tyre issue.

I would not run them all year.

Are there Michelin CrossClimate + available in 205/45 R 16?   There is another member that was going to fit them.

Vredestein quatracs are a good all round choice at reasonable price. Also they last quite well.

Have used the 3's and 5's and found them good all weather all season performers. Not too much of a compromise for summer use but still work well in snow and cold/wet conditions.

I’d buy cross climates without hesitation, but I cannot get them in this size, or at least I cannot find them.

@Ricardo345

Where are you located?

Oponeo have various all seasons in your size. For example vredestein quatrac 5 at £83

If you are stuck for size availability locally - if you are in UK I can understand that, have a look on www.mytyres.co.uk  I've used them a few times in the past and used them the other year when I thought that my older daughter should consider all season tyres as her tyres were due to be replaced and her car had 17" tyres with a very low aspect ratio - that worked for her s there was no Michelin CrossClimates in that size, I ordered in a set of Kleber Quadraxer.

Edit:- spelling checked/sorted!

With some of the more obscure wheel sizes, sometimes need to look at an internet tyre company with UK fitting partners

https://www.tyres-pneus-online.co.uk/car-tyres-205-45-16.html#

This one shows 9 all seasons in that size (but I have never heard of majority of them)

Not used them, it is just an example, so not making any recommendation

Appears Cross Climates are not available in this size

Thanks for all your comments, the Vredestein I think are the front runners, @Gmac983 thanks for you comments on them, I have some slight hesitation as the tread pattern is more akin to summer tyres, albeit with some sipes.

@Ricardo345

Yes the vredesteins do perhaps look a little plain (as in not aggressive looking) but they certainly do the job, have used them on a Ford Fiesta (3's), Vauxhall Mokka (5's) and a Citroen grand Picasso (5's). Obviously they won't be as effective in harsh winter climates as an out and out winter tyre but they aren't meant to be. Couldn't fault them in my experience really, does what most people in the UK require, as the latest crop of "eco" tyres that all main manufacturers supply OEM ( better known as ditch finders made by Bertie Bassett) are so unfit for purpose in the UK.

Have also used Falken Euroall seasons on my old Yeti and they were excellent in the snow but as they were more towards the aggressive end of the scale were rather noisy and vague in warmer dry conditions. The vredi' quatracs were a much better compromise in my view.

Also have used winters on my old octy vrs which were supreme in the snow but were not so good shall we say in warmer dry conditions so had to change them over for the summer time.

I run Vredestein Quatrac 5 as a winter tyre and have just fitted them for the fourth winter. All above 5mm after 3 seasons.

Only problem I had was when the snow was so deep it lifted the front tyres of the car off the ground.

Just reversed back and went another way.

I am in the South of the UK and for me they work very well.

Thanks @AGFalco can I ask why you don’t keep them on all year?

cheers.

i have Pirelli sottozero on during winter, and want to run all seasons on all year after these have been changed. I’m in Wiltshire, mainly muddy and icy, occasionally snow and slush.

Was just about to ask the same thing.

I use mine all year around up here in the wilds of Caithness. Our winters are hit and miss, sometimes a b4st4rd, sometimes quite mild. But always slimey, greasy and cold/wet roads in the winter.

Summer tyres work better in the hotter months down here. I am in North Dorset so not too different to you.

I would too, if I lived up there.

If you just want to get there then the Vredestein Quatrac 5's are a good choice.

If you want to Briskoda it during the dry/hot season then summer tyres are way to go.

Mytyres / Delti .com  also have UK tyre fitting partners even though they are a German company.

And what conclusions were those that rest of us hadn't drawn already?

The all season/cross climate type tyre is the one to be on for 99% of the UK. Absolute zero surprises there.

I don't think anyone on here is disputing the fact that if you wish to have no compromise in the tyres you use then change summer to winter or summer to all season/cross climate. However for the rest who don't feel that need to drive like Vin Diesel the all season/cross climate all year round does what we require. Even on the 15 degree test the summer tyre was only fractionally better than the all season.

Also I would have really liked to see some sort of typical OEM eco summer tyre included in the above comparison rather than a premium (something like a Michelin Primacy for example).

Going up one size in width to 215/45 gives better rim protection as the sidewalls bulge out more. Both these two tyres come with rim protection moulded into the sidewalls. This Goodyear was Original Equipment on the Audi A1, but can be used on other cars.

215/45 fitted to a 6.5" rim will give a noticeably softer ride than a 205/45 fitted to a 6.5" rim, as not only is the sidewall higher but the width of the tyre relative to the width of the rim is wider which helps the sidewalls flex more easily. Compared to 205/45R16 tyre you can reduce the tyre pressure of a 215/45R16 tyre by about 3psi which again improves the ride quality.

One comment/observation I have to add is, my older daughter came down a wheel size when she bought winter tyres for her new Leon Cupra, the tyre size was 225/40 X 18, I suggested that she used the official width of wheel that SEAT advise which was 7.5", due to limitations with some wheel design options, she chose to go for 8.0" width - that means that the side walls are near enough vertical and offer none of the sidewall rib protection that is built into her new Goodyear winter tyres - that might be a bit annoying - even annoying in the summer months when these wheels will get stacked one on top of the other as they will need something in between to stop alloy wheel to alloy wheel contact!  I don't think that she or her boyfriend, who is a car nut saw that coming, such is life, I suppose of this comes also from the actual wheel design!

  • 2 weeks later...

I have looked for all season tyres for my daughter's Fabia, but sadly Skoda decided to fit the most uncommon tyre size. Not a big choice and most tyres are expensive.

@26DIPP

What size are they?

Is a big choice required if there is ones that suit and do the job and are the size you are after?

Edited by Roottootemoot

As posted by thread starter.

Are the Quatrac 5's too expensive or not right for the job?

What about Khumo's?
