I have had to recently regrettably part ways with my 2013 CTHE engine Fabia VRS.

 

Before purchasing the car, I read all through the oil consumption issues and felt confident that I would much less likely to have these problems with a CTHE engine. They were consequently worse!

 

After purchasing this car for £5800 and owning this car for only 3 months, I experienced an oil consumption level that I have not been able to find elsewhere online. The car was consuming 1 litre of oil every week with no oil leaks or burning oil!

 

Two weeks after purchasing the car, on the way to a work doo the oil light came on and when checking the levels it was completely bone dry, baring in mind that when I checked the oil level on the day of purchase the level was fine.

 

This prompted a panic driven daily oil check at lunchtime giving the engine enough time to cool down. I took pictures daily of the oil level (Pictures have time stamps) that shows the oil being consumed at this rate.

 

I eventually took it into Skoda in the last 2 weeks of ownership where they looked at the engine and decided that there was two solutions to the problem, the first being a job that costs £500 which may not work (can’t remember what the job was), and if it didn’t work then a new engine which they quoted around £10k including labour!

After weighing up my options, I decided to look into financing a newer Fabia after enjoying the courtesy Fabia I had when my VRS was in. I chose a 1.2 Fabia Monte Carlo 110PS and they accepted my VRS in as P/X for £3100 (what webuyanycar quoted).

This was the best decision I made as the days leading up to up to the car exchange I had multiple problems including:

·         Car jolting when putting foot down for hard acceleration

·         Engine management light coming on intermittently when accelerating (for 10 secs)

·         Car going into limp mode on 2 occasions

·         Car starting to sound like a diesel

 

It was a lucky escape and Skoda are apparently going to try and either sell the car or send it to auction, so avoid of a Race Blue Skoda Fabia VRS with diamond cut alloys, 63 plate with around 64,000 miles!

Well the first job was New Oil Spray Jets, 

and the replacement engine was never going to be £10,000 fitted, or £6,500 not even £5,000.

 

?

Could you please post what the Car Registration number is so that people do not have to try making it out?

Yes that was it, and with the quote of a new engine I did assume they were quoting high because they either didn't want the work or didn't want to lose the sale on the Monte. Either way it would still have been too expensive for me.

 

The number plate was: SF63 GVP 

In the unlikely event of them trying to pull a moody and sell it on, they will almost certainly swap the numberplate anyway.My guess is they will undertake the first, lower cost job and that has a decent chance of being helpful. Bear in mind, from the £500 quote, most of that will be labour, VAT, etc so for them to pay their mechanic, who gets paid doing this, other jobs or sitting on his lardy arse, the repair will be effectively, free. The part will be supplied trade prices, at the very worse way and they may well already have them stocked. Either way, the purchase price compared to the retail price is massively different. 

So, if the £500 job cost them £100, I would be surprised. They would then have the kudos of saying the job had been done in order to alleviate concern in this area or shut up and say nothing. In stating it was done, they would then be able to offer the 2 year warranty on the job, backed by Skoda UK so if it went up the swannee, they would be covered again!

 

I would then think if the job was unsuccessful in repairing the car, THATS where they would shift it via auctions, trade sale, etc and still have sold a car to you! So, they are in quite a good position to start with. Even the full engine option, which as mentioned, would be nearer £5K, would incur less labour cost to them and might actually be quite a speedy way of dealing with the job. Its easier to swap the whole thing then to strip and fix, in many instances. 

Again, a two year warranty for the new buyer, the dealer is covered too!

 

The same cars are going around and around the trade, into auction, sold to a dealer, punted to WBAC and on and on.  This one was got shot of by the previous person because it was gubbed.

I would normally say the first fix they would have tried would have been to fit the new uprated oil squirter's, The squirters alone come in at £700 before labour so the quote sounds off already however yours is the CTHE and should have the newer squirters, To me you've done the right thing as that cars about 2 melt valve or 2.

 

The other symptoms might not even be oil related its probably just a classic example of someone not looking after the car, The jolting under acceleration was probably the wrong plugs the garage stuck in the car as plugs for these are pretty specific.

 

In 3 months you lost £2700 of value on a car that was most likely sold to you ****ed, Personally I wouldn't have stood for it mate and demanded the money back or a car of the same value.

@MilgeS  had a CAVE engine car that was an oil user,

he replaced it with one of the first CTHE's out and it was an oil user & got a new engine and it used oil, it then got under warranty the Breather Mods, the Oil Spray Jets & the Software update carried out.

Just to correct the above, I started with one of the first CTHE engines and that was replaced with another CTHE engine that still burned oil, never had a CAVE engine.

The car was definitely not looked after as I had to get a wheel bearing tightened after a few weeks, apparently when it was replaced they just didn't tighten it. 

I agree with you mate but the dealership I bought it from was 40 miles away and the  dealer wasn't having anything to do with it when I questioned him. 
I reckon not driving back and forth to him probably saved me as the car felt as if it was on its last legs when driving to Skoda to exchange. I'm just happy they took it as P/X and I no longer had to deal with it.

Did the car come with some sort of Warranty ?.  They must have know about it drinking oil, 

AA Inspected and protected.  That will be chocolate.

It shows how little these protections can be.  Lets see if a next buyer gets an issues resolved.

What a disappointment. 63 reg is no age and 60k no mileage for an engine. Are VRS engines designed to be 'well oiled' as they are expected to be ragged around? Just noticed it is an auto. Very difficult to mistreat an auto

If you look at the top of this section you might get an idea on 1.4 TSI Twinchargers.

of the 2010-2012 engines the failure rate is greater than 20% with even replaced engines replaced.

From 2012-2014/15 the engine that replaced the discontinued one has a lower failure rate, but is catching up.

The issue is the same with VW, SEAT & Audi twinchargers around the world.
