Rear Differential Replacement

Featured Replies

Hi,

Garage has told me that I need to replace the rear diff on my Skoda MK II 1.6 TDI 4x4 Estate. But I want to be clear on exactly which part that I need.

Does anyone know how I would find the exact part number I need - I have contacted a SKODA garage but need this fixed as soon as possible.

Thanks in advance.

Jake

I think I may be in a similar position, in my case for a 2.0tdi '07 scout.

From what I've discovered so far it seems the diff & haldex are all in one housing and said housing is the same for all mk2 4x4 cars.

What I'm not clear at this stage on is whether the internals are different depending on the power output of the motor, plus the different wheel sizes in use.

I'll keep digging ...

Exactly the same problem I am trying to figure out. Trying to find the part numbers currently.

Its an independent garage that we have used for years and has always been fair. Not a VW or Skoda specialist - the only query he had was making sure the replacement part is right.

This was picked up when it went in for MOT (although it didn't cause it to fail its MOT) although I did raise the issue (as per http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/481817-when-accelerator-pedal-is-engaged) with the mechanic at the time. The garage has said that their molten metal in some areas around the differential. I don't have the full details as I couldn't answer the call as this has come second hand.

I  dont think so Micky, the different wheel sizes end up at pretty much the same rolling radius when the tyre profile is taken into account, the CW&P ratio is matched to the ratio of the front transfer box which I believe is common across all the gearboxes.

Funny how every 4x4 rear diff you get near to ends up failing, I hope you didnt change your Haldex oil in the same manner after watching me sabotage mine :D

As far as I can tell the rear axle final drive unit is the same up to 2008-05-25 when it changes part number.  There is a suggestion that the final drive unit is common across all the VW range and does not vary by vehicle or type but this needs verifying further.

There are plenty of final drives on offer on fleabay - budget about 400 squid - and check it will fit your car.  You don't want to buy a new one - over 3k plus labour!

I don't know the workshop details for changing over a final drive - that's next.

The parts diagram for your year of mk2 Octy 4x4 is here.  Check from your VIN which of the two versions should apply.

@StickyMicky I have spoken to a Skoda specialist who has confirmed that the part for a 2L will work for for a 1.6L

I have a part on order so the will hopefully will have some proof of this shortly.

The way the transfer box works means that changing the front diff ratio alone will change the gearing by the same amount on both axles and the transfer box and rear differential can be standardised across all the vehicles, engine sizes, power ratings, fuels and wheel tyre combinations.
