Skoda Fabia non starter occasional

Featured Replies

Hi,

I have a 2003 Skoda fabia 1.4 MPI and occasionally it won`t start. It cranks but won`t start.

There are days when it works with no problem but there are days where the first attempt to start in the day is not a success.

I have replaced the air filter, spark plugs and the coolant temperature sensor with no luck. I can hear the fuel pump noise every time I turn the ignition on but it won`t start.

Please note I am not a car expert - I use google/youtube to diagnose and replace some parts. I don`t have professional tools.

I have found a similar topic but I don`t have access to it: http://briskoda.net/forums/topic/206480-fabia-occasional-non-starter/

Cheers guys,

Cristian

Does the immobiliser light flash? If so, it could be cracked solder joints on the instrument cluster circuit board, which is not uncommon. They can make intermittent contact and be affected by ambient temperature. Take the cluster out and open it up to check for cracked joints which you can reflow with a soldering iron.

Instructions for removing and opening the cluster can be found in this thread (scroll down on the page)...

Pins 1 &17 are the immobiliser joints....

Spray instrument cluster pins and plugs with contact cleaner on refitting.

I have no lights flashing. The only lights which is on is the ABS light but was told it is the sensor. the brakes are working fine.

Does the engine crank/turn over?

yes. every time.

Could this be a cam position sensor fault. Are they reliable?

Do you have a scanner to read fault codes? You can get cheap ones on ebay that work OK for basic stuff.
