Annoying things about the Mk4!

So after 500 miles I don’t think I’m going to get on with this car. Actually the car itself is fine, the tech however is irritating and distracting. I may get used to it but at the moment I’m glad it’s only on a 2 year lease. The biggest annoyance is the lane assist which is so intrusive, switches on every time the engine is started, and I’m constantly having to fight if left active. It really is ridiculous and nowhere near as good as the system in a Ford (as a comparison with my other car). Other tech niggles are the SYNC option resetting every time the car is started on the aircon, the stupid climate controls, the daft volume slider which gets activated if you place your hand in the wrong place to keep steady when trying to use the screen when moving, the useless gesture control, the radio controls which default to favourites rather than showing the screen of which station you are actually listening to (I know you can just use the Home Screen but it doesn’t show the full radio text). Just overall too many swipes required. Negative post I know, and this will apply to all VAG software now I suspect, but how car companies get away with such distracting software is amazing. Ford don’t escape criticism either, when I turn that car on I have to press ok to get rid of silly disclaimers before I can see things like the digital speedo etc, but overall it’s nowhere near as annoying as the Skoda. Bit of a rant sorry, but unless there are some software updates pretty quick to sort this stuff out I’ll be glad when it goes back. The team who designed / tested this system clearly have no idea of real world driving.

Only had mine a week and I'm starting to think the same Pob. I came from the MKIII Superb to one of these. The difference is huge, and not in a good way. For a company that prides themselves on being "simply clever" they have really made a mess of this one. None of the controls are intuitive. The small rear view mirror was an issue they had on the MKIII Superb too when it first came out and they changed it when it was facelifted so they have basically made the same mistake again. Everytime I swere to avoid potholes (which is often in the UK) I have to fight the lane assist. The dash cam power point is on the wrong side for RHD. You can have the inbuilt sav nav on the virtual cockpit but not the google maps one through android auto. All this after a week so I suspect I'll find more. Big disappoinment from what on the outside looks like a pretty decent car.

That's the same with both my non MK4 cars too.

I had to go out and check the rear view mirror as I hadn’t noticed anything wrong with it. It seems ok to me, slightly bigger than the Golf I just handed back, definitely bigger than the one in my wife’s Fiesta. I’ll be fitting a dash cam tomorrow and the wire sticking out from the right of the rear view mirror housing will annoy me but nowhere near as much as being told how to steer by the car!

Confused why people are complaining about the mirror, if it was any bigger it wouldnt make the back window any bigger? The shape of the window makes it less visible not the mirror. I think its the correct size for the car

A few more issues... park assist has failed twice, front assist has failed once, climate controls say this function is not operational yet for a few mins when you start the engine (great when you want to get going in a morning), the max screen demist stops working when a door is opened (eg a passenger getting in). The fan still works, the demisting just stops working (in fact it gets more misted up), have to switch ignition off and restart engine / press max demist again for it to start working again. It’s really odd that one. Oh and when you shut the tailgate door there’s a rattle as if a screw / pin is loose inside the high level brake light. I’m going to call the dealer to take a look at it but with software issues all theyll do is update the software and hope for the best.

tbh think it does need some kind of software update as i dont have these issues anymore, i did....when i first got the car but took to dealer and never had the issue again, as for the boot that does sound like an issue, not heard anything from mine. Let us know how u get on with dealer

Can I ask what software version yours has? Mine says 1664 on one bit and unknown on another bit.

It's going to the dealer at the end of the month anyway, I'm finding more Gremlins while I wait though. Such as, I can only sign in as a guest so that may be the reason why loads of things always reset (like favourite radio stations, temp settings, sat nav destinations, etc) and my keyless entry stopped working on the rear doors.

One thing I did discover is I have headlight washers, which I have never had before and my word do they have a powerful jet! The splash radius soaked a poor bloke walking past as I was sitting at the lights 😂

Will take a look later. I was going to complain that the heated door mirrors weren’t working, but then noticed you have to actually turn them on with the mirror control knob rather than them coming on with the heated rear window like every other recent car I’ve had!

mine seems to be exactly the same how odd but not had a single problem since it went to dealer on day 2 of owning the car, and yes you need to be logged in skoda connect to save stuff, if you have problems it logging in make sure when you enter your password you turn caps lock off if you dont have a capital letter first as it auto turns caps lock on for first letter, and hahahaha that made me laugh, they are very powerful

I test drove a MK4 and the first time the Lane Assist started doing it's thing I thought the car had lost traction as the steering suddenly felt really light. Took me a few corners and some almost soiled underwear to realise that it was the lane assist and found out how to switch it off. I didn't realise that it came back on every time. That would really get on my wick.

Bought a Volvo instead which a) is a lot more obvious about when it is employing Lane Assist and b) Allows you to switch it off permanently.

Btw for the new guys we have a thread here for annoying things

I figured out the vibrations in 2 cyl mode.

It is down to how the rubber bushings on the bonnet are set. I set them to the highest possible level and vibrations are now less obvious.

Try it out.

oh really will have to try this out and see if solves the issue

I agree that the infotainment is bonkers, you need a co-pilot to operate it on the move.

No problems with the 2 cylinder mode but lane assist is very annoying. It's ok on M roads and A roads where the lanes are well marked and wide but on B roads and narrow country lanes it can not cope. It keeps on bonging and saying 'please keep to the middle of the lane' over and over when I am trying to avoid broken road surfaces and pot holes etc. It's a bit annoying on main roads when you always have to  indicate when turning off, even when there is no one there to see your indicators. It would be better if it defaulted to OFF.

On my car, a hatch, there is no rear wiper and today I bought a squeegy which I will need to use every morning to clear the back screen. As soon as I am moving this is not a problem but first thing, I have to manually clear the rear screen.  First world problems!

It seems that one press on the remote door lock will set the internal motion detector alarm.  I had that on a Fabia a few years ago and accidentally locked my wife in the car as I walked off to get a paper. The car doors were dead locked and interior motion sensor was activated. My wife was very very very angry. Beware.

Other than that and my 3rd gear problems, I think the car is a beauty.

I have a similar feeling about lane assist on our second car, a 2020 Toyota Aygo, it too makes far too many 'complaints' on non M or dual carriageway roads - but at least when I turn it off it stays off.

Seems to me that lane assists isn't fit for purpose on anything other than M or dual carriageway roads.

I had a SEAT Areca previously and the lane assist was perfect. Seeing that it comes from the same VAG stable I can't understand why the Octavia is so bad!

Much of the software is shared with the Golf 8 - which was delayed for several months whilst VAG tried (in vain it seems) to sort out the software problems.

Add to the problems discussed here the fact that VAG have introduced a Diagnostic Gateway which means that only dealers with access to the VW servers can make setup changes to many of the electronic modules in this generation of cars then IMHO I'm not going to be buying another new VAG car (and I've owned them continuously since 1999 so that's a long term loyal customer they've lost).

Does this make VCDS obsolet?

Not yet, the guys at Ross-Tech are working on it but since the Golf 8 isn't freely available in the US (where they are based) it won't be this week or this month.

Even with the diagnostic gateway you can still get fault code details, but you can't make any changes.

BTW these comments apply to ALL third party diagnostic tools including OBD11, etc. and not just to VCDS.

For goodness sake! It's as if Skoda decided to care less and less about the RHD conversions of each generation - they went from a near perfect conversion on the MKII to leaving the handbrake and the bonnet release on the wrong side on the MKIII and then only go halfway with moving the parking brake to the correct side on the MKIV while then opting to leave the USB C on the wrong side of the mirror.

I'm sure people would have paid the extra €10 per car it would have cost to have had the MKIV properly converted to RHD and have everything on the correct side. The power connection not being switched over is poor and shows how the RHD market really isn't given the same consideration as the home market.

It's the little things that can bug me about a car - and this would be one of them.

Does the issue about not being able to open the passenger door to access the bonnet release when the battery is dead still exist on the IV as it does on the III?

How are the LED lights, I've had both replaced under warranty on my FL Mark 3 and they still have condensation in them when it is damp / cold or you wash the car. Did they get those designed right on the Mark IV?

Both our other cars have LED lights (2017 Mini Clubman Cooper S, Abarth 124 Spider) and do not exhibit any issues with condensation under the same conditions as the Octavia.

mine gets terrible condensation, when i told dealer they said its common with the octavia and nothing could be done

That is poor - if BMW Mini and Fiat Abarth can have a headlamp design that doesn't exhibit such issues I can't see why Skoda can't manage it. I had water staining in both of the original FL Headlamps the replacements have issues still, but (touches wood) they aren't showing any water staining so far.

very poor, wouldnt mind if it was a bit but its a lot and you cant miss it, will try and get a pic next time, when i spoke to dealer i was gobsmacked when they said its common and nothing can be done as if change it would just do it again, very strange that if they know it does this why not fix it?
