MY21 Amundsen Map update procedure

Navigation maps are updated twice a year; other software updates (e.g. Bluetooth, MirrorLink or Station Logos) are updated irregularly, if needed.

I would question the 'as needed' comment. From experience, other software updates are only usually done if it is to correct a fault - not just general improvement or new features that may have been added. I would think that any form of update that required garage time is 'discouraged' or classed as non-essential as it is a loss of revenue.

On my Kodiaq, after many months tracking down issues with the SIM card and off system lockups, a garage software update of the MIB (Columbus) solved everything except the selection of a destination from the contact list on the connected phone. But at least that V2 system accepted postcodes and showed a real address!

Mine picks up roadworks without needing a map update. I think it knows about them from online warnings as mine told me a local road had roadworks before they started! And then tells me that the 40 mph limit on the other carriageway also applies to me when it doesn't!

My favourite 'test' road to see if my maps are up to date used to be the A14 at Huntington. But I haven't been allowed to drive that way for a L O N G time!

Chris

You don't have to physically drive anywhere to see if a road is on the map, just pan for it.  What particular road are you interested in? I'll be abe to see if its on my map for my driveway in Scotland.  :D

My VW maps used to be updated every May and November or so, but I wouldn't trust the Skoda portal to be correct as it still tells me to update my MIB3 satnav with an SD card!

And |I've been assured by Skoda Customer Support (for what that's worth!) that the online updates are issued whenever the maps in your country get updated. (But despite that, my maps are version 20.9 not 20.11 as some others have reported.)

Does it? Are you sure its not telling you to update your MIB2 satnav?  The fact you don't have a MIB2 satnav is probably what's causing all the confusion. Skoda's iinfo is such pants I think it's even confusing their customer services farless we the end users.

When I enter the Update Portal using my VIN, I'd expect it to use that data to realise I have a MY21 car (and so a MIB3) rather than just recognise it as a Karoq!! It's not rocket science to decode a Skoda VIN!!

Need to try that one. I used to travel west to Sandy a lot. The last time I went was last November and at the Cambridge road works the car kept telling me to keep right, I did and ended up going over the big bridge towards Huntingdon. It was a nightmare to get back onto the A428. I ended up getting out my old Garmin Zumo (with 2007 maps!) and trying the best of both. Eventually the wife got out the map book and navigated us back to the 428.

Next time I hope the maps my dealer just updated for me will get me there.

Tom

Sitting in the car today I checked out the map and it appears to have been updated. I'd still need to drive it to make sure it doesn't tell me to 'keep right' the same way it told me before.

I agree, I couldn't persuade my then local dealer who I bought the car from to do an infotainment update and ended up doing it with help from this website - at least you could do that on an Amundsen MIB1!

I find all this discussion so interesting but so absolutely pathetic of Skoda, it’s such hard work trying to make any sense out of it and more important how to do easy updates.

On my Garmin nuvi I plugged into usb on my computer, went into Garmin Express, updates downloaded free ( for life) and frequently, job done.!!!

Why are Skoda trying to re invent the wheel and producing a square one!!
Regards to all and stay safe.

GoogMaps on CarPlay.  It’s Da Future I tell you.   Not sure I’d bother with built in SatNags any more.

We''d all expect the correct information however thats a luxury that we do not get. Nearly every thread contains an example of mis-information.

One of my favorite phrases is "People see what they want to see".  You're seeing that the system is telling you there's an update available for your headunit, just like loads of people with the same issue on Karoq and other Skoda models. But you're ignoring where it tells you how to update your SIM card. i.e. the system believes you have a MIB2 unit.

Could there be a possibility that Skoda have their wires crossed again and this information is not relevent to MIB3 systems? Updates may be happening in the background, automatically over the air. It woud make sense if it did. I'm willing to bet most VW Group owners never update their map software. If you have a built in sim then it would make sense for the system to do this itself without any intervention from us. Common sense says thats how an over-the-air MIB3 system should work. Whether the designers had common sense is anyone's guess.

The problem is nobody seems to know how MIB3 systems actually work - including Skoda, because several folk have contacted them ( me being one ) and we've all had different answers.

Well my understanding is that the MIB3 system updates 'local' maps online whenever updates are released, and Customer Support tell me this means 'your country'. (Not known if this means the UK or England!) Certainly my map database jumped last week from v19:11 to v20:09, and I'd guess the delay was caused by my not using my car enough over the past few months so that the ignition was on long enough for the file to be downloaded earlier.

I'm also told that if I plan a trip to France, say, it will check for updated maps that are relevant to the journey, and download them as well. (Hopefully when I'm still in the UK?)

Why are they doing this? Well one of the major implications is that like all other VAG customers we will no longer be able to download free map updates for 5 years as we could with the MIB1 & 2 systems, and now will only be able to update our maps by subscribing to the Skoda Infotainment Online Service at 70€ a year.

Our new Karoq has been back in the garage for a week now trying to sort out the satnav as it displays the wrong speeds on some roads. Map updates are up to date. According to Skoda they say no one else has had this problem! They still haven’t solved it.

I am finding all this complete ongoing indifference from UK customer service so frustrating. Has anyone got any new ideas how we stir up some meaningful action over this Map update matter and indeed other issues regarding the NON Customer service we are sll experiencing from Skoda Head Office.

Stay safe everyone and put your thinking caps on over this matter

I think they also have their hands full with VAG over dieselgate and the UK class action as well..... maybe not as focused as they should be?

Unfortunately that seems to be the standard response nowadays, since 'Who sold you that then?' doesn't work to well at a Skoda dealers!

The car can pick up the speed limits in three ways I think. From the GPS position and the map, from online information about road works, and from the camera seeing a speed limit sign (if you have that option.) The last way also suffers from speed limit signs being obscured by trees, bushes and other traffic of course.

My car will tell me that there is a 5 mph speed limit on entering a car park, then update it to 10 mph when it sees the speed limit sign.

When I approach a road works on a duel carriageway it shows the 40 mph limit, but also does this when I am on the other carriageway opposite the road works with the normal 60 mph limit.

When I am on a 30 mph road with 20 mph signs for a road joining it, it often picks up the 20 mph signs at the junction and tells me my road is also a 20 mph limit.

There are some roads in Stafford which are 30, but the car suddenly shows a 45 mph limit (!) for no reason before switching back to 30.

Other drivers have also reported this problem, and really all we can do is treat the speed limit reminders as advisory rather than gospel. Just be thankful that we are still driving our cars rather than computers!

I have altered the car settings to give me a visual reminder if it thinks I am exceeding the current speed limit, but not an audible warning as that was getting too annoying!

Re: Karoq SE Drive –

Dear Mr ..........

Thank you for getting in contact with us.

I have spoken with one of my colleagues who has confirmed that the map updates are done automatically to your Multi-Media Unit. This is because all new ŠKODAs come with 1 year free ŠKODA Connect Services.

Once this has expired, you can either chose to renew your ŠKODA Connect Services, or not and have to do this manually. This would be done by downloading the map update onto a USBC stick; that would then be plugged in and manually uploaded onto the vehicle. These instructions will be updated for your make and model, once translated over from German to English.

I would like to apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused. Of course, should you have any other queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on the details below.

Thank you for contacting ŠKODA UK.

Kind regards

That is amazingly good news!! So they seem to be saying that by this autumn we will be able to download the updated maps (or perhaps November 2021 by the time they are published) and update our cars via the USB-C ports. My only concern is that several of us have already tried this and failed, so it suggests that the manual update didn't fail because the satnav couldn't read the files, but because we needed some kind of install file in the bundle?

I do hope Jennifer-Louize has got her facts right! Perhaps worthwhile keeping her letter somewhere safe :)

Mine does this as well . It also sometimes shows 110 in a 70 limit. I think its the kph equivalent.

Whilst not a map update question this is related to an oddity with Skoda sat nav’s

Does anyone with the latest MIB have any experience of driving in Europe. Does the clock update automatically?

I have a 2018 Octavia, with a new Karoq due for delivery in May.

The octy refuses to update the clock to the new timezone on entering France. It will advise me that the speed limits are x,y,z dependent on various road types, but not change the clock - regardless of the ‘set clock by GPS’ setting.

I am convinced my previous 2015 Octavia did change the clock, it even changed the headlamp alignment (because it had Bi-Xenons) - just seems we are going backwards with functionality!

It all works in mysterious ways. Map updates are needed as even last week it kept trying to take me up one way streets the wrong way to get back on a closed road.

Another very strange anomaly is that on the M11 there is a 60 and 50 mile speed limit for roadworks.  My Kodiaq 3 year old Columbus displays all the correct speed restrictions in the roadworks but despite the 'new' MIB3 Amundsen showing the actual roadworks, the displayed speed stays at 70!

Not much help when you are using the new speed alert system that picks up from the satnav the speed limits in place whether temporary or actual!

Maybe Skoda are using different sources for traffic and roadworks data?

Does your Kodiaq have road sign recognition - that overrides standard speed limits.

Not sure but that could make sense. I have the Kodiaq Edition '67 plate. How do I check if this option is included or activated? I could not see it anywhere in the menus.

Thanks.

Thanks.

I have a Karoq '67 plate Edition so I would expect you have it. One way to check is when you pass a temporary speed limit sign (even variable speed limits on overhead gantries on a motorway) - it should change on the display pretty much immediately as you pass the sign. The system isn't 100% reliable and odd facing signs can throw it, but I think it works very well overall.

Also (just been out and checked) - Menu/Vehicle/Driver Assistance/Dynamic Road Sign Display.  Check the box and it should be OK.

I always think it is a pity that the only signs it recognises, however, are speed limit and No Overtaking signs. Thinking about it, though, most road signs don't have a 'turn off' sign associated with them, or are limited range (such as 'left turn ahead'). Speed Limit and No Overtaking have a paired sign that will override (ie a new speed limit or a cancellation version).

I'm not going to sit here and go through the Highway Code to check though.:biggrin:

I've just been out to my car for the first time in about a week and thought I would check versions of software etc. and I noticed that my navigation database has been updated to 21.1 - haven't done anything apart from taking it for a run last weekend for about an hour.
