🤣🤣🤣🤣 Imagine, “hold down left rear power window button and front fog light button for ten seconds to reboot” 🤦🏻‍♂️

To be honest I’m not sure the ID3 / 4 is a good benchmark for the rest of us.

Reading on one of the other threads, both of these models were launched “without” some key functions and VW openly admitted this was the case and that these would be online in the coming months after launch.

I would also imagine that these OTA updates for the ID’s would be similar to the Tesla ones and are purely for fully electric performance / functionality, rather than general infotainment units.

I could be wrong, but I’d say it’s the most likely.

Some OTA updates require your car to be stationary. This was the case with one OTA update my car got a month back.

If it's going to do OTA updates, then I would expect it to occur overnight, when the car is parked up.

Unless you're like me do stupid shifts, but I suspect any motion would halt the download and upgrade until it stays stationary for a prolonged period of time.

it already does this, if you update whilst trying to drive it says you have to be stationary and stops doing the update

Octavia can be the cars that nearly never sleep as used as Taxis globally and many maybe even sit at ranks ticking over without the engine being stopped.

Those using the newest cars as Taxis / Private hire cars might well be among the best judges on how Skoda are doing.

The Octavia seems to be doing very well in the car sales in Europe in the first quarter 2021, or at least in the First Registrations.

Ive got to say i love my VRS , its sooo fast and responsive. I dont care about the software niggles. Its so smooth when i drive eco ( when the mrs is in the car) Fuel economy is ****e though ,, best ive had after 1400 miles is 33.6.

Ive waxed it to death and it gets looks from loads of peeps. One looker said "WHALLL is that a SKODA".  I like the fact from my POV that the car is rare right now and its nor an Audi or a Beemurr as the roads are full of these .

That's what I like to here 👌🏼👌🏼 Those MPG figures will do me, my Leon FR with the 1.4 ACT engine only averaged a max of around 37 👍🏼

37!!?? Is your right foot made of lead (currently got the 1.4 and I'm averaging high 40s - I suspect that won't be quite as good once the VRS arrives (if it arrives).

🤣🤣 No not at all, but I only do short journeys mostly to and from work which is only 2 miles away, all on 30mph limits. I had the older non ACT 1.4 before the ACT and actually found it to be better on fuel. Best average I ever got was 57mpg over about 23 miles, but that was mostly motorway and I tried my hardest, barley wen above 50mph and was drafting lorries most of the way 😂

The vRS is undoubtedly a poor choice for short urban commutes but I figure it's probably my last chance to own something reasonably sporty with a good old combustion engine, but still have room for the family and IKEA furniture

I agree that's probably true but just to skew things I am a company car user, but have found this forum very useful since I got my Superb in 2016 and then the Octavia last December!  Helps that since the Superb we've also had a Yeti (then sold it as the sunroof leaked) and also got a Fabia and Citigo, Skoda bug has bitten me well and truly and this forum is a great help!

As far as my Octy goes, I've done a little over 1,600 miles since the start of December due to lockdown (normally 30,000 a year), and its nice to drive and efficient (MySkoda App showing average 61.4mpg over the 1,600 miles).  Infotainment is a gripe, definitely not 'simply clever' but I'm getting the hang of it.  Aside from the known over-intrusive lane assist and the irritating driver 'assist' messages (now turned off) generally OK (assuming the ACC hiccup doesn't repeat!).

On balance I think I still prefer my old Mk3 Superb, even though it was a really basic spec as it just worked and drove nicely; unfortunately a new Superb was out of my car budget.  I'm sure as I spend more time in the Octavia I'll warm to it more.

I'm awaiting delivery of a Mk IV to replace my Mk3 but I also have a Model 3.

If the Skoda is anything like that then the car will only download the update over wi-fi and will do it itself without you doing anything BUT it will not install the download until the car is stationary AND the owner says yes to the update so it doesn't start installing when you want to go back out in your car.

Just this Wednesday every Model 3 owner in Europe has been given a free two week trail of Enhanced Auto Pilot. Now that's what I call a good OTA update. ;0)

I was able to test Canton today, my friend got regular octavia with it.

Before i start i do not listen classical music or rock, for me decent bass is a must, since now i have custom sub in the back of the car.

So Canton does not provide any bass at all, i felt more bass from door speakers that from sub in the back(we checked all settings to make sure its maxed out), this is extremely disappointing, since to get canton i needed to get spare wheel. I do not think brake in for speakers will change that. Other than that sound is jus ok.
BWM harman kardon option on most 3 series is around 500eur, which is miles better than canton.

BTW, his apple carplay was not working in wireless mode, with cable it was not starting properly either.

As a bonus i found that all assists can not be turned off and saved so every time i will start car it will have all these stupid lane assists or emergency stop on by default, since i should have car after 3-4 weeks, there is nothing i can do, but if i would have to place new order i would probably pay bit more to get bit more.

Friend told me that sometimes when you slow down to cross speed-bump like 5km/h automatically turns on front parking sensors, meaning music stops..that is something that could be changed by software, and probably rest of annoying issues.

I will not comment on emergency stops, where car decides to stop for no real reason, i would keep this off as well, but then to start driving i must spend like 5 minutes every single time to change settings over and over again...coding is possible, but that voids warranty.
damn.

You can find very positve as well as negative websites on the internet but you've also got to understand that there are United Nations restricitons to full self driving in the UK that do not exist in the USA, therefore Autopilot i n the UK cannot be directly compared Autopilot is the US.

Genuine question, do you consider the Octavia to be safe as it's not too late for me to back out of my deal and having read this I'm now unsure what to do.

I would assume that this is a fault with a particular vehicle, not a characteristic of the model. The system is probably the same as in all the VAG cars - there's no reason why Skoda would develop such a complex system when it exists elsewhere in the group.

Just beware that by isolating the car's safety systems you could be held liable/culpable for any damage, injuries sustained or criminal proceedings may instigated against you, depending on the road laws in your country. Safety systems are there for a reason, not as a toy.

If you don't like them, get rid of the car and find something that doesn't have any of them, but you may struggle to find a new one as the EU stranglehold on car safety systems and specifications increases, unless you buy something that is considerably older and less well specified.

You are right i guess. But either way i like to drive not to be driven, sure these features are idiot proof driving features, i prefer to feel vibrations if something is wrong with car, that has saved me couple of times, once when my front wheel was loose i felt it on steering wheel and every winter occasionally i feel some snow in my rims, that needs to be cleaned out. So for some that have no idea how car works it is nice to have, but for some that like to feel road and car this is painful, that being said i would like to have option to turn that thing off and it would save it on car user.

I have not read any EU regulations or rules, so in this case there is no escape from this, if you are right. I will see how it will go in 4 weeks.

Anyone knows, if coding is done on car, to change some settings, for example, default start-stop=off, would that void warranty?
there are multiple opinions on internet, i would like to hear real experience.

It's not the EU that we've just left that controls these this it's the United Nations.

If you want to read more, realistically I suspect you don't, (for this continent) start by looking here. https://unece.org/automated-driving

All I'm basically saying is if you do it on your head be it, however have you ever heard of a poor lawyer?

Never ever leave yourself open to legal proceedings, they're expensive without exception.

An update to my post of last week.

The car is growing on me massively. I’ve got more familiar with the quantum leap in technology & Infotainment system; yes a few niggles but now I understand what its up to I’m very happy.

After the first month with Skida Octavia 1.5TSI I can say that I am rather happy. There were a few glitches, screen was completely black on two ocasions, and once was black with pulsating background, but it was temporary. Yesterday the car decided to brake while passing under the bridge, but the situation cannot be compared to the  one of described by other forum members. As I moved from Fabia 2018, I can say that Android Auto actually works even without cable, while in Fabia could not make it work. Lights on Octavia are amazing... Consumption was 7l/100km which is ok. Fabia was around 6l/km with that engine that makes sound like a kettle. Skoda connect is another story, was not able to add the car through the app, had to use regular laptop, and still the car disappears every once and a while, or the app gets stuck... Android Auto in wireless mode drains phone battery with concearning rate, or my Samsung S10+ battery is programmed to die after 2 years. Will try soon new S21 so will see which on is.

Well I'm quite relieved that I have at least 7-8 months before they'll be pestering me to change my car and whilst I'll be glad to see the back of it and now reading about all of the ongoing issues with the Mk4, I'm now at the point where I can honestly say that I don't think that my next car will be an RS or any Skoda tbqh.

I'll be giving much more consideration towards a Jaguar XE or BMW 128.

Having had loads of electronic systems issues with my existing car, I really don't think that I could deal with another car with so many mechanical and electronic issues as seen here.

Skoda have shown that they don't want to really bother with software updates/upgrades unless put under significant coercion to do so.

In 7 to 8 months I'm pretty sure Skoda will fix these RHD issues with matrix lights and km/mph display. I think all other issues are already gone with the newer cars.

1 hour ago, TheUltraRunner said:

I hope that your optimism is well founded, because if I'm going to be shelling out the best part of £39k on a car I want it to perform and operate perfectly from day one. No software glitches, tourist mode to work correctly for when I go to France and Belgium (whenever that may be).

However with the experience I've had with my current vehicle and the amount of coercion that I have had to use to get a couple of ecu's upgraded with new software which seems to have eradicated 99.9% of the problems, I just don't see it happening.

BMW, Jaguar do it as they see it as an evolutionary thing that gets rid of problems being experienced by their customers in the real world. Skoda don't. Very poor.
