Three Things...

Featured Replies

OK, many of us have had more than our fair share of gripes and problems with our shiny new Mk4 Octavia. But if your experience is anything like mine there are many things to like about the cars, even the most irksome ones.

To lighten the spirits over the weekend how about we each list the three things we like best about our cars. A moan free zone, and an opportunity to indulge on the nicer side of owning the car. So grab a glass of your favourite tipple 🍷 and share our enjoyment.

At some point in over the next week or so I'll consolidate the lists and see if there's a patten emerging.

To kick off the proceedings here's mine

  1. Fuel economy (1.5Tsi Manual - about 50-54mpg so far)
  2. ACC (esp. the speed limiter when on a steep descent & gear change without disabling it - SO much better than the basic CC on my previous motor. I guess I might be in a minority of one here! )
  3. Memory drivers seat with key assignment

Over to you guys...

Love the performance and the way it acts when you floor the pedal. The car seems to recoil and then shoot forward.

Number 2 , the amount of people who have stopped and said wow "is that really a SKODA"!!

Doesn't the ACC do that normally?

The speed limiter is prevent you passing a set speed - 'without a concerted effort' AFAIK.

I guess so. Just that the braking on a descent is new to me - and I love it :-)

Too many glasses of wine...

Good idea for a thread amongst all the miseries. I have a 1.5 petrol manual SE hatch. I like lots of things about the car but especially...

The engine, adequate power with good economy. I have long term 48 mpg and it is improving, 55 mpg since last refuel. The engine is also quiet and smooth. It will be perfect for long motorway journeys when allowed to make them.

The space and comfort of the cabin and boot.  The interior is generously sized for four adults and the seats are comfortable and everyone has plenty of leg room. The interior is quiet at speed and the five USB ports are useful. The boot is huge. The dash and instruments are easy on the eye. The ride is good.

I love the exterior styling. It's a big saloon but looks more like a coupe. The shape resembles a Jaguar or an Audi. Mine is petrol blue and it suits the colour very well. I have received many compliments from strangers and neighbours about the car.

So, I am very enthusiastic about the car. I did have a problem at first: the gear box was very notchy selecting third gear, it was as if the gear lever did not have enough travel forward to select 3rd reliably,  I contacted the sales team and was asked to put some miles on the car to see if it improved but it got worse. The gears started to crunch when I selected 3rd. In January, the gear box was replaced and it is good now.  Some of the user-interface technology is a pain and not really usable when you are driving but it is better than I had in the MK3 Octavia. The built in wrist-rest helps a lot. The actual dash board, the speedo etc is very good, I marvel at the clarity of the electronic display.

Think my 3 would have to be

1 power

2 looks

3 power

Mine would be:
1. looks
2. power
3. good value for money

1. I’m convinced this is a thing but never seen it mentioned.  In traffic when the engine has stopped, if the car in front moves off it seems to realise and starts the engine before you’ve even reacted on a pedal

2. DCC comfort mode is lovely.

3.  Race Blue looks awesome after a car wash.

If you have ACC it detects the car in front moving away and starts the engine, I found it very irritating if the car in front was a creeper, the engine would start only for the traffic to be still stationary.

I’ve had my Octavia 3 nearly a month now, and call me superficial, but I love...

1. The colour combination - Maple Brown metallic with beige interior.

2. The DSG gearbox

3. The hydraulic bonnet struts (actually I’m sneaking in a moan here.  The car didn’t have them, I had to install them myself, with help from this forum)

1) the most spacious car for the money

2) upgrade to full 5 years warranty for extra 800€ (Apparently, KIA gives 7 years, but it wears off rapidly)

3) decent consumption 1.5TSI

Could you clarify how the Kia 7 year warranty ' wears off rapidly' ?

Honestly, this is what I heard, was lazy to check the details, so it might be not true.

Skoda sales guys told me that in the case of Kia after every year some of the components are not under warranty any longer. For Skoda it is the full warranty 5 years, for a little extra money.

Maybe they tricked me... Do not know for sure. After that I ditched Kia and went for Octavia without going to Kia center...

If the salesman said it's so, then it must be true!

There's probably some truth to what he says but I think that would also be true of your extended warranty too, if you read the fine print. There will be all sorts of caveats on type of wear and tear the components are subject to. For normal drivers the warranties are reasonable and protect against most unusual catastrophic expenses.

In Australia Skoda offer a standard 5 year, unlimited kilometre warranty, as long as you are not a professional driver covering huge annual distances.

5 years is standard here for most non-luxury manufacturers with Kia (possibly Suzuki?) and a couple of Chinese manufacturers 7 years and Mitsubishi 10 years with a distance ceilings.

The Kamiq gets really good reviews here and has becomes the Skoda top seller, only restricted by supply issues.

Mine would be:

1. Power.

2. Styling.

3. Ride (with DCC

OK, so I've come from a 12 year old Rav4 so my standards are pretty low lol, but I find the ride in my wife's BMW worse in comparison now too.

  • 3 weeks later...

1. Fuel consumption.

2. Cup holders now take red bull sized cans. Previously I had to get an adapter printed for my mk3 Superb.

3. High functioning rear lights look cool when you unlock at night.

1. value for money, for example, BWM don't come with wireless android, at least year 19/20 cars, when i considered options I was not able to find car with 200hp+ and decent tech inside.

2. Fuel consumption, this weekend I did little trip 329km mostly at 110-120km/h, did some 140/150km/h overtakes, did couple 200km/h at the end got 7.6L/100km which is very good in my opinion.

3. Power, however that comes with some gripes as well, it would be nice to be able to put down all these horses for that car needed to be all wheel drive, tires will not hold for long as well.

====

very happy RS owner here, seems that i have even found good seat position after owning volvo :D

1. Fuel consumption!  My 2.0 TDi Estate is averaging over 70mpg!  I've never known anything like it.

2. I do like the interior lighting and the "Skoda" light projected into the floor underneath the front doors :-)

3. Did I mention the fuel economy?

1. combination of good looks with Titan blue colour.

2. Matrix lights - works absolutely great  and visibility is amazing

3. safety assistances - i.e. when reversing it brakes automaticaly if you missed the oncoming car, saved me couple of times already.

Ofcourse there are other great things such as ACC, DSG and DCC....overall i love my car and served me well for almost 14k km already.

This is my 3rd Vrs. Had mk 1, then mk 2 now mk4.

Very pleased with the car so far. I do like all the driving aids the car has to offer, still getting to grips with the tech.

1. Performance is powerful and smooth.

2. Excellent fuel economy .

3. Comfort.

Currently Running the car in with a road trip in Scotland.

Why does the DCC setting deafult to "Normal" mode after each restart. I tried to save my preference to the key but no luck so far.

This is by design. You can't save the driving mode. It will always return to "Normal".
