Rattles and Creaks

Featured Replies

Just for info and a sum up.

I put two foam filter strips between both top corners of the digital dash and another between the bottom left corner of the right front vent,  drove along the problem road and all very quiet.  removed each one in turn,  the two at the top of the dash were my main problem but the vent joint was making a slight noise.  The filter foam can be compressed very small so used a very thin blade to push them in and they cannot be seen,  problem solved.

I do still have a slight problem under the passenger side facia but have seen other cures for that and is not a priority ATM.

I also have a hearing aid it amplifies the higher frequencies, so I could have removed it to stop the problem!!

Glad the info has helped.

Thanks, Peter, I'll follow that up with the right front vent.

Funnily enough I did nearly the same thing just yesterday, had some spare rubber door draught proofing, and squeezed it into the top left and top right of the plastic surround of the virtual cockpit. Doesn't move at all now, and no tiny little clicking rattle type sound. But as you have aswell, on the passenger door somewhere there is a slightly similar light rattle, it's the only one to try and find.

Need to have someone drive whilst I use my ears and hands pressing everything, another tip I saw on YouTube was someone linking their phone to their sound system and playing different types of bass tones, low and high frequency, this then highlighted the rattles whilst just parked up. Might give that a go aswell.

On mine it is the digital dash plastics and it seems to be in the area above the steering column. It is temperature sensitive but I’m hoping wedging in some foam rubber will fix. My Yeti had a really annoying rattle and it was the cowls round the speedo and tachometer - tiny bit of foam jammed in gap cured it so fingers crossed for Kamiq

Wrong car

I had used some very soft PC fan filter foam slightly to the right as shown in ryan-vrs's photo.  This eventually seemed to start again and i definately think its behind the dash and putting a wedge at the top between the hard and soft plastic seems to stop something further inside rattling.  I have now used a very thin black plastic spacer used to centre double glazing windows into frames,  it is harder but cannot be seen when pushed in hard and my Kamiq is now very quiet, not perfec but am happy.

hope the info helps others.

Just to update on this also - my virtual dash surround also had a reoccuring rattle.

I ended up so frustrated that I pulled out the plastic surround making it partially loose, which would make the rattle disappear, wasn't bothered if it was loose, it was silent., but then another time the rattle woud somehow come back once driving over a rumbling bit of tarmac.

Got so annoyed I pulled out the entire plastic surround off. It's all held in with metal clips on the dash, and plastic tabs that fit into those metal clips. One of those metal clips, the top right corner, was totally loose and broken, hence the constant rattle sound as it wasn't securing anything. Putting the bit of rubber wedged into the corner of the surround, dampened it for a while, but then it would rattle again another time, assuming that metal clip just moved slightly enough to just jiggle around in it's space.

Anyway removed the entire metal clip, and so far nice silence. That entire plastic surround has about 3 clips on the bottom, and 3 or 4 along the top, with a cover over the steering wheel part of the actual surround. Puling towards you pops the surround out of the metal clips on the dash, and just pushing back inwards slots back into the clips.

I just took it off again now to clarify

Go and buy a Rolls Royce, I guarantee that you will become sensitive to the odd rattle or squeak.  Like I say, simple physics.

When was the last time a car manufacturer, ANY car manufacturer, sold a car with the guarantee of no squeaks or rattles?

No?  Thought not.

VW tried it in the late eighties and early nineties (who remembers the advert?), but that was a sales gimmick.  They still squeaked and rattled, I had two of them so I’m qualified to confirm it,

Jesus, come on guys 🙄😂😂

Thanks Ryan-vrs for the photo,  very useful.

Whilst I agree with Carefree about rattles,  in the past there were lots of different ones and were more accepted,  nowadays cars are much quieter and my Kamiq was and is,  the quietest I've ever driven.  The problem for me was that it always rattled on a 1/2 mile stretch of road near where  I live that I use almost every day and was very annoying.

The clips are of the types commonly used and I have had problems with them over the years.

FWIW I have found either the clips get slack in their mounting holes/slots or the plastic pins/pegs become loose and cause light plastic rattles particularly if the car is old and plastic hardens,  The area around the steering column/dash is often a problem with vibration/rattles as is heating/cooling of the air conditioning behind the dash.

To cure problem with these clips,  if they are in good condition,  I bend the locating tags so they fit tight in their mountings and also bend the metal in the slots to make sure the plastic lugs also fit tightly.  I also wipe all likely plastic interfaces with a cloth sprayed with silicone,  this normally solves the problems.  Assuming the car has been engineered well,  I would replace any broken/missing clips to ensure the surround fits centrally.

The above is just based my experiences over the years and my be of benefit to other readers,   I have still got a plastic wedge in the surround but now i know how it is fitted I intend to do as detailed above.

Thanks

I'm fine with most sounds, but when it's like a paperclip ratting in a glass jar then it's noticeable.

Totally agree, I’m on my second Kamiq and they have been by far the quietest, most solidly built cars I’ve ever owned.

Did you have to use any tool to prise it off or just finger nails!?

I was thinking of trying a wide piece of plastic with a small thin right angle end (if I can find or make one).

Thanks

Hi I solved it this way!

Not tried to pull it out yet but did you need to use any tool or was it just brute force!?

And then when this is resolved you’ll notice another creak or rattle.  Where does it end?🙄

haha yeah true re more noise, I have a tiny tiny noise near the glass roof, but not bothered. This thing was bloody annoying, so much so I didn't care if a clip broke and just pulled it towards myself. It unclips very easy, pure silent now. Although mine was because one of those metal clips was broken, so was rattling around in the enclosure for it.

Yeah mate don’t sweat it, there isn’t a car out there that doesn’t rattle or squeak now and again.  Just drive and enjoy👍

Update

Some more information for those annoyed with rattles around electronic dash.

After quit a while with thin plastic strip in top left corner of the bezel I decided to cure it properly.

  1. Removed strip to check if it had distorted enough to stop the problem - it hadn't.

  2. Removed the bezel and all metal clips were present and tight fitted.

  3. On checking the "tabs" I found they all had black cloth stuck on them. It looked professionally fitted but my dealer did say they had not removed the bezel when I mentioned the problem previously.

  4. After looking carefully at the bezel and its location into the soft dash surround I suspected the rattle was due to the edge "lip" and the other "locator" strips rubbing against the surround (the likelihood of plastic rattles increases with time as it progressively hardens).

  5. As I wanted to prove my assumptions and before fitting foam (as suggested), I decided to use silicon grease.

  6. I placed a very small amount on a cloth and rubbed it on the the extreme edge of the bezel and plastic locating tabs, refitted the bezel and no rattle.

The above may also be accomplished by cleaning the interior plastics with cleaning sprays as they seam to contain plastic lubricants. I will resort to fitting foam should the problem re-occur!

Hope the above helps anyone irritated by any small rattles around the dash.
