the truth about electric cars

So as i said, the First Minister of Scotland was on about banning new Petrol & Diesels by 2032.

The current First Minister of Scotland currently in the US is going to have to speak on Scotland plan for getting to Net Zero and the time scale for Scotland now that Rishi has said what he plans for the UK.

There is a General Election due before a Holyrood Election for Scotland.

Maybe new leaders for both political parties before a year passes, or new parties in Government.

What is the feeling on Scotland over the SNP recent history as in England we got the pictures of the tents in sturgeon's House, the expensive motor home but have not heard any real conclusion.

I am hoping that Labour stay on course for a majority in the dozens and do not need SNP votes for any actions in a new government though i do forlorn the position of Scottish Labour and hope it can back a chunk of its previously held number of seats and lessons have been learnt.

Did not know Scotland has different EV and ICE phasing dates and whilst Glasgow as such a big city does suffer pollution issues proud of them taking their own stance ahead of national implementation.

As you mentioned earlier the colder temperatures in Scotland are a factor but if Norway can then Scotland cannae too.

Tents on the front and rear gardens.

It was not that expensive a motorhome as motorhomes go at her Mother in Laws house.    Owned by or paid for or leased by the SNP maybe and the personal plate as well.

(As a battle bus.  lol)

So the Proculator Fiscal / Crown Office must be considering if there has been anything illegal might have happened and who might have been involved and if charges will be made.

So time will tell.

Millions and millions spent of public money on EV chargers / hubs in Scotland.  Well over 60 million and many more pledged.

Hopefully there will be an investigation eventually into that and awarding of contracts and the administration of it.

& other transport fiascos in Scotland, The tram inquiry has cost millions as is the ferry one.

Unable to organise a pith up in a hard drinking country sadly.

No need to rush to electric vehicles then. The tories have decided they're going to turn the UK into the dirty man of Europe.

Why, the EU have also decided on 2035, way before the UK did?

Just now, Graham Butcher said:

Doesn't matter what the EU does or does not do. That's nothing to do with the UK now it's shot itself in the foot.

This is about the tories breaking yet another manifesto commitment

The US and EU are spending trillions of dollars and euros and going great guns.

Even the world's biggest polluter China is making big advancements. The UK is becoming the sick man of Europe again.

I wish people would not try and rewrite history.   'This is not Long Before anything'.

It makes a mockery of what they said in 2019 and what they were voted in on "We will lead the global fight against climate change by delivering on our world-leading target of Net Zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050, as advised by the independent Committee on Climate Change".
I think the car industry will dictate what vehicles are for sale in the UK. Maybe import some new old stock even that's been sat in a field somewhere for a couple of years.
All announced in what amounted to a party political broadcast before mentioning it in Parliament as is convention and after Parliament has risen for a two week jolly. Apparently Lindsey Hoyle is livid.

I don't think that any government, anywhere in the world, were elected purely on the strength of their plan to ban the sale of ICE cars, circumstances change all the time.

I agree, you dont think, and neither do i.

But there is one Prime Minister on his way out for some of his teams cunning stunt.

Maybe he has been set up.

He is suited best to tucking his tie into his shirt, rolling up his sleeves and visiting hospitals.

Coasting (turning the engine off and engaging neutral)  in a standard ICE car is illegal

Would you mind quoting said law and the penalties please.

Your definition of the alleged illegal coasting is somewhat lacking, what you say in brackets I do everytime I leave my car.

I think you need to add "whilst the vehicle is in motion" but I'm sure the law if it exists will have the definitive definition.

(I'm away this week. I haven't read the last 2 pages, only 63)

Scrapping 2030 pure ICE ban is nothing more than a political move in a bid for more votes. The 2035 date for zero tailpipe emission vehicle hasn't changed.

As we discussed last week, the original 2030 requirement was not defined to begin with. The car industry are already well ahead with electrified ICE vehicles.

Overall announcement, with increased funding for heat pump installs, I think this is a good move. Less money spent on government "research" and more money actually doing things.

But back peddling would only influence my voting preference one way.

Coasting. This term describes a vehicle travelling in neutral or with the clutch pressed down. It can reduce driver control because

  • engine braking is eliminated
  • vehicle speed downhill will increase quickly
  • increased use of the footbrake can reduce its effectiveness
  • steering response will be affected, particularly on bends and corners
  • it may be more difficult to select the appropriate gear when needed.

Only guidelines (no "must" or "must not"), no penalties. Not illegal.

I was fairly certain of that but I always like to give the fantasists the opportunity to disabuse me.

Its one of my myriad failings, not being able to just smile and keep quiet when someone trots out the old "it's illegal", not good when you live in a country where people never think for themselves and challenge what they are being told (the education system makes them like that) and love to tell others that they risk (not) honky tonk years in prison for whatever it is they are doing.

Apologies:

I always believed it to be illegal because you used to fail your Driving test if you did it.

But there is a little bit of legislation if you happen to have an accident and it;s proven to be the cause.

Thank you PM, and (wooden) cabinet for giving the already well oiled a way of adding thousands to house value and cutting energy bills all with UK government money

I have finally allowed one of the myriad French companies desperate to persuade clients to get free or close to free energy improvements so they can hoover up more of the governments billions allocated to subventions. I was working with this guy anyway (I used his guys to do my taping and jointing).

What I will be getting free or perhaps with a small contribution is.

A reversible heat pump air conditioning unit supplied and installed by my neighbour who I was going to buy mine from anyway to install myself.

A Ballon Thermodynamique which I think you call a heat pump hot water cylinder.

360mm of blown insulation across the loft area (71m2)

80 mm (I think) if extruded polystyrene insulation on the sous-sol ceiling (71m2 again) to stop heat losses from the floor above.

I think there might be a new triple glazed window to replace the only one that is not double glazed and maybe something towards a new front door, it was spoken of but I wont know until I get the devis.

Extruded polystyrene insulation (thickness unknown but the equivalent to 150mm of fibre glass) to all the outside walls on both levels with aluminium window reveals and window cill extenders covered with a mesh textile mesh and then spray rendered in the colour of my choice.

The latter I will have to make some contribution to but as my house is a wreck at present I was going to render the outside myself which would involve buying the machinery and scaffold towers etc to sell on afterwards, this external finish will be the one thing which will make my property 100 times more desirable than it currently looks.

I could have had the internal insulation including the steel stud frame and dry lining for free, no contribution and whilst I would have done all that work anyway like the outside rendering I would have lost room space and at 71m2 it would become pokey, also I really like plasterboarding and can do it at my own pace.

I can also have free solar panels but I'm going to leave that a year or so in the hope that by then they will pay for the pergola on the side of the building to put them on.

The government has allocated billions towards these energy saving initiatives but only a fraction of it is being taken up which they probably knew so they could make up whatever figure would please the electorate, its too much disruption for many people but has come at a good time for me.

And the crazy thing is although I am living here full time and intend to see out my retirement here it is classified as a second home because I am maintaining the Hôtel in Picardie as my principal residence to avoid CGT when I sell it.

So the free or subsidised (dependant on income) energy saving measures are available for second homes and also to renters which does make sense.

What a K-rap article, coasting in neutral with the clutch depressed 😯 tells me all I need to know about the author, the "potential fine" of £1000 is pure fantasy and they don't cite the law which is no surprise as it doesn't exist.

What "difficult driving situation" could there be when you are coasting downhill where you would need to "quickly accelerate out of the problem"?

What if your car does not quickly accelerate?

A moot point considering this topic isn't called the truth about ICE cars and coasting.

Is it even possible to coast in an EV? I thought not.

Edited by @Lee

My DSG Octy tells me it’s coasting on its driving data display when in ECO mode, my late 80s Vauxhall Carlton 3-speed auto had no-option freewheel/coasting in top gear, as did two stroke manual SAABs of the 1960s.

So has coasting ever been illegal?

(apologies for extending off topic tangent)

Back on topic - it’s often been stated that EVs, being heavier than equivalent ICEVs, produce more polluting tyre particles.  (how true this is I don’t know). The BBC news last evening reported how the amount of this pollutant found in sea water is increasing.  Is there a connection, I wonder?  If so, what to do?

Edited by Baxlin

@LeeYes you can coast in an EV if there is the ability to have levels of regening and you choose to coast and not retard the vehicle with regen.

(A member mentioned on here taking the shifter out of D and into N for coasting & i said i don't even try that in an EV. really due to the type of the shifters and concern over making a mistake because generally they do shift too easily. You should not in error be able to go to Reverse, but until you try you do not know.

if you did likely the box would ignore you.  My MINI can go to Reverse while still moving forward and no foot on the brake which might just be good for J turns,)

@lol-lolAir Source Heat Pump grants are up to £9,000 in Scotland already.

There was an increase fro the £7,500 previously.

@Baxlin

Maybe watch the video on page 59.

Not all EV drivers are shredding tyres / wheel spinning or wearing them out quicker than the tyres of the same size on equally heavy or not as heavy ICE vehicles.

Because they can have a lot more torque / power not everyone uses it, and there are lots of not very heavy EV,s that are wearing tyres to suit the vehicle.

There are cars that are hard on tyres, Skoda Enyaq 80 on the rears and Skoda Superb with Saw toothing issues because of misalignment.

Swings and roundabouts.   (& there are lots of roundabouts in the UK. )

VW Group / Skoda have a long way to go to sort out their brake components before Euro 7 comes in.

Maybe the Ice vehicles need to go back to Drum Brakes as the EV,s have and the Dealerships will need to service them and remove drums and clear out and deal with particles and not just say in Skoda Websites they Check Brakes.  They used to somehow at dealers manage to clear out Drums and service yet never take the rear wheels off...

Put some fuel in the Ark this afternoon, nearly £70 and it only took about 45 litres.  Think that works over £7 a gallon.

I see Tescos now allow up to £120 in a single transaction as presumably several drivers complained that £100 was just not enough only giving then 14 gallons when they wanted to put more in.

Must use the EV more which is getting easier with the new chargers popping up.

Yes I do this in the Zoe now and then.  Particularly when the battery is 90% to 100% full and regen does not work full, nowhere for regen to go.  Just slot the gear shift lever in to N, keep hand on the shifter lever and pop back in to Drive/B mode when needed.  Zoe is single gear, some cars have two gears, that gear give max torque from about 1500 revs which is about 12 mph hence the good acceleration, 0-30 in three point two seconds but the motor maximum spin revs is 11k revs which is "only" an indicated 90 mph. So a bit weird compare to my Arkana's 7 speed EDC gearbox but Zoe single gear works pretty well,  it actually has a clutch apparently but it does not feel like a ICE clutch and it is totally under the control of the car's electronics but it feels like the clutch is disengaged and one is free wheeling when in N on the gearstick but rolling along at 30, 50, 70 or 90 mph indicated.  At 100 mph the dashboard shouts the electric motor is over revving as seen on Zoe ZE 50 doing a lap on the Nürburgring, 9 min 30 second in.  Think coasting in neutral helps give an extra few miles range.

So whilst the phase out date for ICE cars is now 2035, there has been no change to the zero emissions mandate for the percentage of cars that manufacturers must sell that are zero emissions. If that's the case then it seems to me that nothing has really changed much? Whilst it will still be theoretically possible to buy a new ICE car in 2035 I guess the likelihood is that almost everyone will be forced into an EV long before then due to manufacturers not wanting to sell anything else.

Are we likely to see ICE cars artificially inflated in price from next year? Quite likely I think - especially with a fine of £15k per car on the line for selling more than your allowance!
