Off road wheels and tyres

Featured Replies

Hi, I've sold my wonderful v6 4x4 superb and have bought a 2021 Skoda superb scout,

with 19" wheels and 235x40 potenzas. (340mm front discs), this is the aussie spec, 2l turbo, 4x4, DSG

I've done a number of trips in  it including some mild offroading, I'm really happy with the car and it's abilities, but I'm planning another  trip which contains some fairly rough tracks, so I'm considering a second set of wheels with a more dirt road focused tyre and a lot more sidewall.

The tyre placard lists 17s, 18s and 19s but I think thats for all Superbs,

does anyone know whats the smallest diameter wheel I can fit on the the 340mm discs?

has anybody done this?

are there any VW/Audi/Skoda that would fit (Currently I have 8j x19, ET44, 5x 112, 57 centres)

I'm aware of legalities and also happy to wear a speed inaccuracy for this trip as long as the wheels and tyres fit,

thanks

if u have AWD, i.e. 340mm disc brakes, then the minimum rim size required is 18".

non-AWD Superb has 312mm disc brakes, hence they can getaway with 16" rims.

Thanks,  so 17" won't fit,  so it looks like 225 x 50   tyres on 18' rim are the most sidewall I can get

That's odd as I have 17" wheels which fit.

interesting.

so why does Skoda put an 18" skinny spare for the 280/Scout AWD models?

I have 17’s as winter tyres on my 4x4 2.0Tsi, not much room but they do fit.

in one word "idiots" :)

and 18" can't be changed to smaller for 280ps 4x4 + L&K/Scout/Sportline

while 280ps 4x4 + Ambition/Elegance comes with 17" Stratos

in next 2023. car i will swap spare wheel from current car,

18" as spare wheel is worst of all choices -> https://www.briskoda.net/forums/topic/503478-installing-spare-wheel/?tab=comments#comment-5653889

Hi Coppertop, thats interesting, I assume you have the bigger brakes (340mm)?

Are they Skoda wheels?

Thanks john999boy, that's useful. just confirming that you're using 17" wheels over the 340mm brakes?, are they skoda wheels or something else, thanks

17” wheels fit fine over 340mm discs just fine on my Kodiaq

They aren't Skoda wheels (and a different VAG car!) but it's the same for all the spirited VAG vehicles.

I currently drive OEM 17" winter wheels on my TDI190 4x4. No problem with them.

But I don't know the exact size of my front brake discs. Not sure if this helps... Sorry.🤔

A 17" space saver tyre would need to have higher sidewalls than an 18" space saver tyre to maintain a similar outside diameter, eg. 125/80R17 instead of 125/70R18.

A 125/80R17 would have even less performance than a 125/70R18.

Similar outside diameters

125/80R17 631.8mm

125/70R18 632.2mm

Continuing my quest to get some extra ground clearance and a better wheel/tyre combination than my 235/40/19 tyres for offroad work on my Superb scout.

I bought some Yeti 7x17" wheels with 225/50/17 tyres, these have the same bolt pattern, offset, centres and lug nuts, so they are an easy swap.

As most of you said, they should fit over the brake calipers and they do.

To maximise the ground clearance I want to eventually swap the the tyres, I know 225/55/17s will fit but has anybody put a 225/60/17 on a current superb? or a (215/60/17)

I'm aware of legalities and also happy to wear a speed inaccuracy for this trip as long as the wheels and tyres fit

check free space in arch

+++++++++    height    diameter
225/55r17     +5mm    +1.5%
215/60r17    +11mm    +3.4%
225/60r17    +16mm    +4.9%

215/65r17    +21mm    +6.5%

@Aussiev6 best if going as big as you can with the tyres that you maybe not only carry one spare wheel and tyre that matches but a pair of spares.

Thanks, I've used the comparison site, I've checked the arch and it looks ok but you can't really tell until you put it through the complete range of suspension movements, hence I'd like to see if anyone has done it

Outside diameter

235/40R19 670.6mm

235/55R17 690.3mm

Therefore, 235/55R17 has a 2.9% bigger outside diameter than 235/40R19.

Someone has already changed their Yeti from 225/50R17 to 235/55R17 on the standard Yeti 7Jx17 ET45 rims.

Yes. I plan on taking two matched spares

I really want to know if someone has put them on a superb

The Yeti and Superb MK3 use similar outside diameter tyres, eg. 215/60R16 is a size shared between both cars.

Therefore, if 235/55R17 fits the Yeti without rubbing it would suggest that it would also fit the Superb MK3 without rubbing.

Clearly, first hand experience with the Superb MK3 would be preferable. However, in Europe there's little interest in fitting oversize off-road capable tyres to the Superb MK3.

Suspension wise yes but in terms of the wheel envelope, the wheelarch liner the Yeti especially in "Outdoor" spec has far more space above the wheel.

That said its may make contact with full suspension travel on full lock to the inner part of the arch liner and that could well be common between the vehicles
