Error: selector lever...

Why would they charge you for that if the car is under warranty?

I've bought the all in package as my car is over 3 years old now. Apparently I have to pay a diagnostic charge regardless of whether the fault is covered under the warranty or not.

  • That’s mad! I had that on both my MK3s years ago. Can’t believe it’s not fixed yet.

I have to say I'd be fighting that one all the way. If the car is under warranty and you're getting a fault message, there's a fault and Skoda should rectify it without slugging you with a fake charge. A few years ago I had the same issue with my Mk7 Golf DSG and VW replaced the shifter, no costs, no arguments. It's amazing the DSG 'bug' still seems to be in existence, it must be costing VW a fortune for letting the problem go on for so many years now.

I had mine fixed under warranty, when the car was just about two years old. They didn't charge me for diagnostics, or anything else, but that was with the manufacturer warranty. Not sure how it works with the extended warranty, though. I haven't claimed on that yet...

Is the Skoda factory warranty only 3 yrs in the UK?

Yes

It's "standard practice" and seems another way of squeezing money from you. This known error is on the display. Even if you go in with a live VCDS or OBD II display it will be ignored. The All in One is good to a point,  however I found the dealer wanted not to fix a known obvious problem even when pointed out twice. The irony is that it's a VWFS product and shouldn't cost the dealership a penny . I.e. The dealer should protect you and not VWFS.

Ok, thanks. It explains a few posts that have confused me in this and other threads on the warranty topic. Big variations on warranty according to region it seems.

You can get extended (up to 5 years) factory warranty at the time of purchasing/ordering the car. But only then.

So is that the 'all in package' @BNB90 is referring to? If claims on the warranty extension are subject to non-refundable dealer 'diagnostic' charges, it should be disclosed in the PDS before you fork out for the extended cover. Anyway, it sounds like a great milking machine for the dealer!

When you order the car, you can add extended warranty, and this only.can be done at the moment of ordering it. So, I take it it's manufacturer warranty...SmartSelect_20240819_002011_SamsungInternet.thumb.jpg.4f27afb1e900f988c46691e613bee26d.jpg

The all-in package is the extended warranty you can get after the manufacturer one expires. It's like an insurance policy really, where you can claim back for any repairs. You can get a warranty for certain named parts (engine, gearbox, etc.), or you can get the all-in package. I also got the all-in one, after my factory warranty exoired in April, and am a bit surprised they charge you for the diagbostics. Possibly you can claim it back from the "insurance"? I need to check the T's and C's....

Thanks for explaining, now I can see what your options are in the UK. My apologies if I've digressed on the topic, it just interests me to learn of the variations in different markets.

I've had third party extended warranties on other cars in the past, as you say, they're more like insurance polices. Certainly not comparable with manufacturer's warranties. In AU Skoda's current factory warranty is 7 years / unlimited km, which is extremely competitive and obviously designed to help accelerate their brand penetration here. They're also up against a few other 7 year warranties, such as Kia. VW is far more established, still with 5 years / unlimited, it's one of the reasons I bought an Octavia instead of a Golf.

Wow, 7 years/unlimited km warranty, that's amazing. Kia have the same in the UK, but not VW group...

Same error message here came up on holiday, error Selector lever fault, you can drive on. Visit workshop

Popped up every morning last week of August, then disappeared during the day, no error shown even on diagnostic check after disappear.

Car is working just fine with or without error message. All this with the petrol engine / hybrid mode.

Came back home, using in electric mode in the town but since than no pop up message for a week already.

Wondered the 12V battery state would cause the electronics to return this error as charging the car also charges the 12v battery.

I remember couple of moths ago I had a single case when started the car in the morning and the dash popped up with the message regarding 12v battery low and asked me to drive it for a while (not sure if started hybrid mode or it changed to petrol engine automatically but for sure engine was running). After 2 km the battery message gone away since than no error.

Not sure how the car charges 12v battery when running only with petrol engine, is that same charger circuit or the high voltage circuit has its own charger and the petrol engine another one.

Hope the issue is not the selector lever mechanism though because car is not under warranty.

Thanks! I will let my mechanic check the error code soon when I go to oil change service.

Hi all, sorry to necro an old thread. Wanted to leave my experience today of having this issue looked at by the Dealers.

I started getting this issue about a month ago, Mainly when the car was cold; If I drove it for some time it would dissappear. However, after taking it to the dealers for inspection under warranty, it became more and more frequent. Moreso now the weather is getting colder.  When I took the vehicle in, they looked at it for a day to investigate and they suggested that it needed a new part on the gearbox after leaving it with them. They ordered that part, told me it was safe to drive and asked me to bring it back in in a few weeks time.

Fast-forward to that appointment and I left the car with Skoda, they promptly brought the car in on the ramps and I left with a hire car. I forgot that I had left something in the glovebox I needed for work so I went back a few hours later to ask if they could let me get it, At this point I could see that the car was on the lift and had its exhaust off so they could get to the gearbox.  The service staff were helpful and let me get the bits i needed after letting the car down and I left the car with the them for the 2/3 days they quoted.

Fast-forward again to today, They ask me to collect the car as its done; I eagerly head down to the dealer this evening and all was seemingly fine, I was ran through my paperworks, jobs done etc. The sweet service manager then heads off to go and bring my car around and this is when it all went to 💩... She brings the car back into the workshop and I can see that she is talking with the service techs, they start looking around the car and get under the bonnet and she comes back to tell me that the car is having more issues and will not go into park so they car cannot be turned off.

Needless to say I was a little miffed (to put it lightly), however, the only solace I can take from it is that it happened whilst the service manager was in the car. I then needed to frantically make amendments to the hire car as I had already notified the company that I no longer needed it, luckily I was able to sort this out with 10mins to spare.

Anybody know what could of happened? The car originally drove fine with no issue other than the warning message and now it seems the car is more broken than when it first arrived!

Ive seen here that people have mentioned that its a microswitch in the tower, so why were they messing with the gearbox?

Thanks in advance!

I have checked the error codes now with the tester (the gearbox error started in august) and of course it was listed but when clicked details showed no errors.

Quite weird because since than car is running without any issues. Along with this error code there were a couple of other errors listed like hybrid system charge, brake, etc but none of them showed errors at its details and none of them showed up on the dash. I still suppose that the computer stores all the abnormal signals received even if those doesn't necessarily indicate real faults.

Will stick to the solenoid contacts repair stated by djmartzian above if any abnormal behavior will come up in the future, before taking the car to dealer.

Too many errors/alarms without any serious fault so far. Still weird.

Hey all, I'm getting both these errors in my Skoda Octavia 2021, but my car won't shift into drive! Will i need to get it towed to my local Skoda dealer? Or is there something else i can do to get it moving??

Try to find the string with a plastic handle under the lever panel and you could put in drive. You only need a flat plastic tool to flip the selector panel up.

Yes I meant shift by wire

After more than half a year with all these selector lever error messages decided to take it to the dealer. Part ordered, waiting to arrive.

Dealer said it is a very common error and the new parts were redesigned and no more faulty.

In fact also looks different than old parts.

Will get back as soon as they replace it with feedback.

The most of the error notifications got winter time, so it is very likely the sensibility to temperature of the parts inside selector.

What year / model do you have? and what error dis you have before?
