Adaptive cruise control woes.

Featured Replies

I've just driven my Octavia 4 with adaptive cruise control on a motorway for the first time. What a pain! Continually slowing the car when not needed. Can it be reverted to non adaptive, even temporarily.

Sadly not! It's an absolute pain. Mine is a 70 plate and they won't update it to stop the undertaking glitch!

In find with the closest setting for following, and the acc in sport mode it’s fairly tolerable. Rarely seems to get it wrong, but i can still be frustrated by it.

if not, you can code normal cruise option to be selectable from the menu, then you can pick either one you like.

You need to be on at least 1896 software. Old versions think the car is left hand drive and as such think our overtaking is undertaking and don't allow it 😞

They say my car doesn't have updates despite me telling them it can have one. The garage is absolutely useless

You are better to DIY this yourself almost, try and find your Software train version installed in it.

As mentioned, it should be 1896, and that needs upgrading to 1941 ASAP also.

They sent these out of factory with bad software.

Massively frustrating for you. My 70 plate had the 'won't let me overtake' fault (along with several other faults) but it was updated nigh on two years ago. It's pretty good now, just occasionally will it get confused and try to prevent overtaking (like once in three or four months). A tap on the throttle pedal sorts it.

I've got used to using ACC now, it's just a bit different to normal CC, albeit frustrating until I got my head around the way it works and adapted my driving to make the most of it. Overall, I now prefer ACC to normal CC.

Currently on S/W 1896, with the car going to the dealers in a few weeks for other stuff so I've asked they update to 1941 at the same visit.

S/W details

I'll try cruise control in the next few days with a trip to the south coast on the A3. I did use it before and it worked fine.

ACC requires some getting used to. I had the same issue in my Ateca i had before. Almost never used ACC.

But now in O4 i got used to it. You just need to remember, that sometimes it requires intervention from driver if you don't want to slow down when you have a car in front of you.

Now i like it very much.

Well, not entirely true :)

You are right, it cannot be enabled by default, BUT it can be coded with OBD11 or VCDS. This way you are getting additional option - ACC, normal CC and speed limiter.

I have it coded, and... used it once for testing :) As said - i got used to ACC and now don't see the need for normal CC.

I first had ACC 7 years ago, initially I was frustrated when it started to slow down a long way behind a slower vehicle, but now I just take over the accelerator to maintain speed (or slow down gently) and use the extra time it gives me to pull out and overtake safely.

Compared to CC on busy British roads it's a game changer IMHO, and I never want to go back to CC again.

That's exactly what i meant :)

Initially it was driving me crazy, but once i got used to it, it's great.

Maybe enabling normal CC can be useful in winter when wet snow gets stuck around the distance sensor and thus the ACC stops working?

My cruise control behaved impeccably.

ACC is the best thing about the car (except for the overtaking undertaking glitch).

All you need is a good understanding of what is a safe distance to the car in front or better anticipation of the road ahead so you can drive in the appropriate lane. All things a good driver should be able to do ACC or no ACC.
