Nephew broke light switch - based on a ticktock

Featured Replies

Hi everyone,

My idiot nephew twisted the rotary dial on my superb lightswitch in the opposite direction based on a ticktok he saw. 🤦‍♂️

Lighs are always on and I got a lighting error on my dash.

Can anyone tell me how to fix it, please?

New light switch. Unfortunately you cannot get a new nephew.

Use said nephew's money!

New switch required.

Tell him you pull it out (in 2 steps) to get fog lights on, not follow Mr Break-It on tic toc (or was he following Mr we sell replacement switches)

Not the news I wanted, guys 😞

How the heck do I pull the old one out? preferably without disassembling the entire console

Assuming it's not completely broken.... It's a push in and slight turn to the right, it'll then lock and pull out.

Much like this around the 20s mark:

I think it may be push in then twist to remove it. Seem to recall doing that on my Octavia.

You don't say how old your nephew is but my grandson is 17 and he's gone from a bright young lad to a halfwit in no time at all 🤣

I would suggest you let your ‘idiot nephew’ take the bus in future - he’ll have plenty of time to watch fellow idiots on Tik-tok then

If the switch should not be turned anti-clockwise what are the 2 icons at the 21.00 and 22.00 positions for?

It's the front and rear fogs. They are activated by pulling the switch out rather than anticlockwise.

I'm sure your yeti has at least rear fog lamps which are also turned on by pulling the switch out 👍

Ah so they are the illuminated icons!

Yes mine does have it but it was too dark to check.

I have every sympathy with the nephew for thinking that he could turn it anti-clockwise, he probably does not yet have a license so wont have twigged that you should not drive on foglights alone.

I spent hours alone in the drivers seat of my parents car "practicing" (fantasising) for the day when I would be driving, I probably wore out the clutch, throttle and gear linkages, the engine would always be flooded after one of my sessions and not want to restart, being obsessive and with a thirst for knowledge I knew exactly what the problem was but did not dare admit it, when my father would lose his rag with the reluctant Capri I would suggest he tried again with the throttle on the floor just in case it might be flooded!

Ouch! That takes me back 😒

Been there, done that!

I remember one going "click" and dropping onto the car mats glowing yellow red and the car swerving

as driver and passenger both reached down to try and pick it up without getting burnt!

I gained several grey hairs during that incident.

These switches are not that complicated and can be taken apart.  I've done it on my car to swap the knob to a chrome effect one.  Start by taking the back plate off, its held on by 3 tabs and then you can see what plastics are broken in the mechanism.  They're quite hardy so I imagine it may just have jumped out of it's runner and needs resetting.

The headlight switch also stores the mileage for some reason so if you swap in a used one when you scan with VCDS it'll note a mileage discrepancy

The last bit cant be correct, it is not a module and does not communicate with others.

The ecu or instrument binnacle yes, many people have changed their light switches usually to get the auto feature but no-one has reported what you say.

That's my first hand experience but maybe it was something else, I did find it very strange.  Either way these switches are fairly simple and can be fixed or modified.  Here's some pictures of mine when split into 2, perhaps can be some help to the OP

Mid 80s, Lecht ski car park, one cold child skipping afternoon on the slopes due to being wet and frozen.  Wonder of that will work with no ignition key.  Hmm is it hot.... aaaaaaaaaargh, then couldn't admit it!  Had a white and black mark for quite a while! :D

How long did you have keep your pants on for? 😄

  • 2 weeks later...

So I've become familiar with this situation in that I'm the muppet that has broken the switch. Don't ask.

I've found YouTube videos on removal, but my knob just spins the whole way round now.

Does anyone have any tips on removal of the switch without the locking mechanism?

I've tried taking the side panel off and pushing it from behind but failed.

I'm so mad at myself.

Like most of us, you probably learnt very quickly why it was orange. Ouch.
