Brake fluid top-up required - preferred / recommended fluid please

Featured Replies

At a recent check, it was noted that brake fluid level was low and should be topped up. When I look at the manual to make sure I get the right stuff, I'm told;

"The brake fluid must comply with standard VW 501 14 . This standard complies with the requirements of the FMVSS 116 DOT4 standard."

Does this mean that as long as the fluid is DOT4 compliant then it can be used. Or is the VW 501 14 something different.

Thanks in advance.

DOT 4 ESP .  VW 501 14 is the Low Viscosity type, often called DOT 4 ESP, LV or Class 6.

Many thanks - so this (https://www.halfords.com/motoring/engine-oils-and-fluids/brake-clutch-fluid/comma-dot-4-esp-brake-fluid-1l-124432.html) would be good to use ? Is there any real difference between 'budget' and 'premium' fluids (I'm guessing not as long as they comply to the same DOT4 ESP standard).

Before you top it up discover why it has dropped !

there is normally a reason for it dropping like Pads wearing, a leak, or may be something else but my first guess is its the pads

and if that is the case as soon as you push the pistons back all the fluid will spill out over the top
